Romeo and Juliet (No Fear Shakespeare Graphic Novels) (No Fear Shakespeare Illustrated)

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up–A visually engaging format includes clearly delineated acts and scenes as well as skilled use of dark and light to highlight mood and recurring themes. Many of the images are striking, particularly the white-on-black night scenes describing Queen Mab's dream appearance and Juliet's decision to drink poison. Well-drawn characters such as the brash young men, the Nurse, and Friar Lawrence come to life in these panels. This is especially true for Juliet, whose early images of youthful innocence contrast sharply with her distraught face as the story progresses. With the exception of Capulet and Montague, who look more like grandfathers than fathers to such young teens, visual characterizations are accurate. Text for this version comes from an abridgment of the modern English translation found in No Fear Shakespeare (Spark, 2007). Readers will not encounter any of Shakespeare's language or poetry in this adaptation. Even familiar speeches such as O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? are modernized to Oh Romeo, Romeo, why must you be Romeo? A limited number of footnotes explain references to unfamiliar phrases, particularly bawdy humor. Readers interested in graphic-novel versions with excerpts from Shakespeare's original play should try Romeo and Juliet (Barron's, 2005), edited by Philip Page and Marilyn Petit, or Richard Appignanesi's adaptation (Abrams, 2007).–Barbara M. My daughter's english teacher recommended she get this graphic novel to help her understand Romeo and Juliet better. I read it as well. It definitely helped my daughter find the material much more relevant. I actually think I learned more about Romeo & Juliet because I wasn't burdened by trying to translate through the language that Shakespeare often uses. It still had all of the key story points and conversations throughout all of the acts.

This graphic novelization of Shakespeare's most famous -- but maybe not his best -- play absolutely stunned me. I've already read the play twice and seen I-don't-know-how-many recreations on stage, in film, and on television, and so I confess my expectations for this newer interpretation were quite low. What fresh air could a graphic novel possibly breathe into a story so common it's become a cliche? You'll be surprised. Or at least I was.For one thing, the artwork is fabulous: beautiful, inventive, playful, modern. For another, the novel uses modified English that communicates Shakespeare's themes clearly but doesn't water them down. This version of the play will be an exciting tool in my classroom -- already I wish I had bought thirty copies instead of just one -- but more than that, it is a piece of art in itself. When I hit the last page, when the Capulets and the Montagues finally reconciled their age-old rivalry, I felt my eyeballs burn with tears, as though I were reading Romeo & Juliet for the first time. It's that good. Highly recommended, even if you're not an English teacher who, like me, is just looking for stuff to help him teach the play for the first time.

These books are great. I keep them on hand to help students who might struggle with the reading of R&J.

Exactly what teacher recommends

Great

Written in "modern English".My 10 years old told me he wanted to know the story of Romeo and Juliet. Still a bit long for him to read, but he really enjoys it. The graphics are pretty good, and the format of presenting such a classic is fantastic. He is still interested to give it a try (later) in "older English).

Had to buy it for school. It was actually better than I expected.

great

Waltz with Bashir: A Lebanon War Story, by Ari Folman

From Publishers Weekly

While it must have been no easy task for Israeli filmmaker Folman and chief illustrator Polonsky to turn their groundbreaking, Golden Globe–winning 2008 animated documentary into a graphic novel, the transition from film to page is flawless. Folman's story is the account of how he came to grips with the repressed memories of the time he was a soldier in the 1982 invasion of Lebanon. As much a study of the fungible nature of memory as a dissection of the ease with which war zones can dehumanize ordinary soldiers, Waltz with Bashir uses the same journalistic technique for self-examination as David Carr did with Night of the Gun. Folman goes from one fellow veteran to the next, trying to get somebody to tell him what he can't remember. Bit by bit the holes are filled in—though never completely; the narrative is never cheapened by turning it into a simple mystery to be solved—as Folman sidles closer to the war's central horror: the massacre of Palestinians by Christian militias at two refugee camps. Utilizing frames that seem cut straight from the film, the book threads together Polonsky's darkly gleaming nightmare drawings into a seamless whole. (Feb.) Grade 10 Up—Adapted from the Oscar-nominated animated film of the same name, this is a stunning investigation into one soldier's real-life experience during Israel's 1982 war in Lebanon. In 2006, Folman met up with a friend from his military service days, who told him of the recurring nightmares he had based on their experiences. Folman admitted to not remembering anything from the conflict and started a quest to find out what really happened to him during those traumatic days. He traveled across Europe interviewing former comrades, a reporter who covered the war, and his own psychologist to piece together at least some of the events that he lived through. As the story develops, both Folman and readers relive the terrors of the Sabra and Shatila Massacre, a tragedy that ended in the slaughter of more than 800 unarmed civilians by the Lebanese Christian Militia while Israeli forces let it happen. While Folman tackles many of the same wartime themes of violence and tragedy as Joe Sacco's Palestine (Fantagraphics, 2001), the additional explorations of memory and dream make the experience more personal. Polonsky's art reuses still images from the film. His clever eye for detail and creative sense for layout make the images explode on the page. Thought-provoking and emotionally powerful, this is a fabulous story for mature readers interested in wartime narratives told in a fresh, innovative style.—Matthew L. This is a moving story related in the graphic format that is best known in comic books but has recently come into increasing use for serious novels and novelettes. The subject is an important one, based on real events in Lebanon in 1982. The principal protagonist and many of the other charactrs are Israelis who were performing their required military service at a time when Israel invaded Lebanon. Sent into Lebanon with little or no understanding of why, they soon found themselves ordered to shoot blindly in various directions, which at first they did with careless abandon. Gradually, however, they became aware that they were killing unarmed women, children and others. Many of these young Israelis suffered afterward from serious psychological problems. For the lead character, the result was complete loss of memory of what he was doing during that period, and the story is developed around his efforts, many years later, to recover that memory by talking with others who were in Lebanon at that time. That is the unfolding story of this graphic book, and it is not appropriate for me to disclose more of it here, or to say who Bashir is except that Bashir is not the protagonist's name. This work is powerful. For those not familiar with the events in Lebanon at that time, it is an intense way to gain some understanding of them, perhaps leading to more traditional book reading to get a broader historical picture. For those who do know the history quite well already, it is a vivid reminder of what is behind more recent happenings involving Israel and Lebanon. The story makes no mention of the U.S. role at the time, which was quite significant.

I found the book "Waltz With Bashir", since the film version is adapted from the graphic novel, to be one of the best true statements about war. With countless devastating, illegal and unnecessary conflicts spread about the world there is none (by soldiers from different observation positions) better than an eye-witness account. In near mint condition the book references the film virtually scene by scene.

I am loving my Waltz with Bashir graphic novel! Thank you!

The book itself is really nice, is a good work but the story I think was more deeply not just an another "story about", but the price was amazing!!!.

Very important book

This is what real war feels like. Confusing. Shameful. As a soldier in the Iraq war, I felt like the machine had been started by the powers that be. Once the machine is started, it is left unmonitored to do as much damage as possible. It doesn't matter when it stops or where or who it destroys in the process. It is war. You always hear that war is bad. I wish that meant something. Fact is, we will never learn. But there are some of us, Ari Folman included, that know the truth. And we will not be able to smile and go along with things the next time someone decides we need to start the machine.

Superb treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder and "postmemory." Highly recommended. J. Incledon

Well, true events described in a realistic way that you may forget that this is a graphic novel.

The Shark's Paintbrush: Biomimicry and How Nature Is Inspiring Innovation

Review

"His vision of a biomimetic ‘new global economy’ is timely, crucial, and thrillingly eye-opening." — Publishers Weekly"Imagine Indiana Jones, Huckleberry Finn, and Erasmus Darwin rolled into one person, and you will have some sense of what it is like to roam and see the world through Jay Harman's biomimetic eyes. The Shark's Paintbrush is a memo of kindness from the living world in a time of crisis and doubt: life in all its intricacy offers untold possibilities for the transformation of civilization."- Paul Hawken, author, Blessed Unrest“Jay Harman is the quintessential biomimic, a principled inventor who sees solutions everywhere he looks in the natural world. And he looks deeply, with the soul of a student. He moves with grace from a world of waving sea kelp to the world of sustainable design, bringing nature’s wisdom into the board rooms of global companies, to the design tables of the engineers and designers who make our world. This is more than a business book, more than a memoir, more than a new way to solve global challenges. It’s a book about a new way to think.”–Janine Benyus, author of Biomimicry and founder of Biomimicry 3.8The Shark’s Paintbrush reveals how nature is inspiring design to be more efficient, effective, resilient, and beautiful. In Nature’s 3.8 billion years of design experience, the roughly 99% of designs that didn’t work got recalled by the Manufacturer. The 1% that survived can teach profound lessons about how things should be made, how they work, and how they fit. Jay Harman’s immersion in and curiosity about the natural world have made him one of the best biomimetic designers. The Shark’s Paintbrush is a masterly field guide for all designers and entrepreneurs who aspire to help the world of the made work like, and live harmoniously with, the world of the born.–Amory B. Lovins, Chairman and Chief Scientist, Rocky Mountain Institute“At this point in our global ecological crisis, the survival of humanity will require a fundamental shift in our attitude toward nature: from finding out how we can dominate and manipulate nature to how we can learn from her. In this brilliant and hopeful book, Jay Harman shows us how far the new field of Biomimicry has already progressed toward this goal. The Shark’s Paintbrush makes for fascinating and joyful reading — much needed in these dark times.”–Fritjof Capra, author of The Science of Leonardo and The Tao of Physics“It blows my mind how the same patterns repeat themselves in flowers, growth in animals, and in shell spirals. When engineers mimic designs from nature, more efficient designs for windmills and fuel efficient vehicles are the result. Many of the breakthroughs are counter intuitive. Jay Harman has told the promise of Biomimicry in a compelling way. The Shark’s Paintbrush is essential reading for people interested in design and engineering.”–Temple Grandin, author Thinking in Pictures“A useful update on recent developments in biomimicry and an intriguing case for innovative green technology that goes beyond sustainability.” Kirkus Review

#13,767 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

The Shark’s Paintbrush is an excellent read that intersperses insights from the world of design inspired by nature with stories of the natural world drawn from the authors personal experience. I found this personalization provided terrific context for why he is so passionate about biomimicry and bio-inspired design, bringing the ideas contained in it to life, as well as making the book particularly readable. The book kicks off with a pretty comprehensive tour of what can be achieved from a biomimetic approach to problem solving, drawing on both 'classic' examples of biomimicry as well as sharing cutting edge examples that were completely new, to me at least. The section on fluid dynamics, and how nano and micro vortices can create quite surprising efficiencies in fluid and air flow was particularly fascinating, and started to finally hint at why a bumble can fly, when I believe classic calculations suggest that it is an aerodynamic impossibility. Sometimes evolution is so efficient that it designs executions that far outstrip even our most sophisticated models. The next part of the book focuses more on the challenges facing entrepreneurs and biomimicists wanting to translate their ideas and prototypes to market. While not applicable to me personally, I found this a fascinating ‘walk a mile in my shoes’ exercise. The later chapters explore how the study of nature can help us to understand systems and processes, and how natures inherent efficiency can act as a model for sustainable innovation. Its hard to overstate how important a concept that is.All in all an informative, engaging and inspiring book that nicely melds an extremely important and useful topic with the experiences of an interesting individual

Not only is this a well-written, highly readable introduction to the wealth of innovations found in nature that would benefit our world, it's also one of the best overviews of the challenges of change dynamics within established industries. The sweep of the potential that understanding and application of the natural world's designs and approaches has for improving the effectiveness of many of our commercial/industrial designs and tools is astounding. How innovations are accepted and incorporated, however, is a long and winding road. Any and all aspiring entrepreneurs in the industrial space should read this, especially the last section of the book. Harman has captured the experience of entrepreneurs, whether they go the "self-financing/grants/angel" route, or venture capitalists. The writing style is unpretentious, clear, engaging, and any reader will gather take-aways of real significance.

The Shark's Paintbrush: Biomimicry and How Nature is Inspiring Innovation by Jay HarmonThis book is about the business opportunities in transfering inventions from the natural world to the manufacturing world. The majority of the book details brilliant inventions based on things evolved by nature. But hanging over every cool invention is the failure to implement it in a profitable way with wide distribution. When you read about these inventions you will want to buy them, you'll wish they existed because of the good they could do the planet in terms of energy savings, efficiency, and simplicity. Then you'll get really fed up of hearing how venture capitalists and greedy conventional industrialists scuppered these brilliant inventions and inspiring young companies. Getting a paradigm shift past the guardians of the status quo is clearly super difficult. Just because you have a superior product doesn't mean you win market share. From a quiet, low energy, super efficient bathroom extractor fan to an organic shaped watercraft these products sound so wonderful.Sadly this is not the first time a brilliant inventor has suffered at the hands of investors, his scientific peers, and the world of manufacturing: Viktor Schauberger went through all this at the beginning of the twentieth century as detailed in the book Hidden Nature: The Startling Insights of Viktor Schauberger by Bartholomew and Bellamy. So I recommend The Sharks Paintbrush as a fascinating read.

Great book! What a fun and informative read. Jay is one of the very few people who have actually applied the principles of Biomimicry to create a successful product. Not only that, but he has taken the time to share his lessons on getting there! It's an enjoyable read on many levels. First, he takes us on an engaging adventure into Australian nature--a youth spent observing the way things REALLY work, after millions (and billions) of years of evolution. You get to go behind the scenes--how nature helped him make it through a difficult childhood, and how he became inspired by what he saw, enough to design something that could make the world a better place for every species on Earth. His stories are funny and engaging. Then, Jay shows us just how hard––and frustrating––it is to go from a great idea to a successful product. If you want to know what mistakes to avoid, this is the book! Jay is a fighter, and always retains his wit and humor. Great read, and highly recommended!

Quite disappointing. I bought this book after waiting through pre-production for it to be availabel for the kindle. The book is more (i.e. mostly) about the authors struggles in the world of Venture Capitalism to get his Biomimicry business going (interesting but not what i wanted/expected). Far to much me me me for my liking, I was hoping for a book about biomimicry, not a book about how to start a biomimicry business using VC. Judging by the amount of time he spends referencing Janine Benyus' book, I am guessing that will have a lot more relevant material. if you're looking for a book that has a basic introduction to the precepts of biomimicry this is just ok, but if you want pure detail about biomimicry, then Benyrus would be far more useful.

I'm halfway through the book, and I'm loving it. I wish I had read this when I was beginning college (I was a mechanical engineering major). Definitely would recommend this book to anyone, regardless of age or profession!
