Marie and Pierre get all the credit, but Irene was a great scientist who spent a lot of her life either in the shadow of her parents or struggling against a system that refused to believe that a woman could be not only a good scientist but a great scientist. Add on top of all that, she was a Jew in Germany as the Nazi's came to power. So her contributions were often mis-credited and covered-up.And Lise Meitner has also been more of a shadow figure and her role has not been as well known as it should be.This is a great book explaining the the physics and chemistry behind all the radioactive research and science, but also the culture and politics at the time.

This is a good book for young people to learn not only about the discovery of nuclear fission, but to understand the role of women in nuclear science.I have produced two films on both of these women. They are: The Path to Nuclear Fission: The Story of Lise Meitner and Otto Hahn and Out from the Shadows: The Story of Irene Joliot Cureie and Frederick Joliot Curie for an adult audience.

Good read for 7-10 grade research, or just for fun if you love history and science.

This is an excellent book for young people who have no idea of the development of nuclear energy.

This book shows the lives and work of two important female scientists: Irene Curie (Marie Curie's daughter) and Lise Meitner. While the science was a bit hard, the story of a woman struggling to be recognized in a science field in the early 1900's was engrossing.Irene Curie never failed to help people. She went to military posts and cured men after an air raid. She spent her 18th birthday in a post at Hoogstade, Belgium. We also learn about Meitner, who struggled not only to obtain an education, but also to find jobs in her field. She was involved in experiments including nuclear fission, but her work was interrupted by WWII.Both highly educated women struggled against the fact that they couldn’t get what they deserved. Curie's efforts to join the French Academy of Science were repeatedly turned down, while Meitner never received a Nobel Prize despite 15 nominations. As conflict builds up in these women’s lives, they try to find a compromise.This book is a blend of biography, science, and heart-warming story. How Irène Curie And Lise Meitner Revolutionized Science And Changed The World by Winifred Conkling tells of two little known scientists and their journey to success through the experimentation of radium and other various substances.While I usually find nonfiction books bland and have trouble concentrating, I did not experience that with RADIOACTIVE! at all --- it was dynamic and a pleasure to read. RADIOACTIVE! Will keep readers gripped by not only informing them about the scientific aspects of Irène Curie and Lise Meitner's life, but also the personal side. While reading, I learned so many new things about these two female scientists that I didn't know before, such as Meitner’s discovery of the nuclear fission. I found that the book almost read like a fiction novel, which was perfect for keeping me gripped on to the story.I think it’s important that that the subject material in YA nonfiction books can be understood by readers aged 12 and above, and RADIOACTIVE! achieves that. As you would expect from a novel about two scientists that worked on radioactivity, there are some pretty hefty science facts that might not be easily understood at first glance. Conkling really makes sure you understand the subject matter, though, by including illustrations to ease you in. I found these extremely useful during my reading and appreciated the helping hand.I did notice, however, that Conkling talked about the two physicists separately rather than intertwining their stories. It didn't throw off the groove of the book, by any means, but I think their stories would have been improved if they were woven together.There's no doubt that RADIOACTIVE! isn't for everyone, but if you like empowering reads about women or enjoy learning about science and the politics of it, pick up this book and give it a whirl. I'm not normally one to write book reviews, but I feel this is an important book so I've got a few words to say about it. Firstly, Cathy O'Brien was so lucky to have Mark Phillips come into her life. Very few men would be willing to sacrifice their career, their home, their family, and all their worldly possessions to rescue and deprogram a CIA slave and her daughter. God's got a special place in heaven for that man. Secondly, I highly recommend acquiring some background information related to the subject matter of this book to prepare yourself before diving in. A few suitable topics of research could be Project Paperclip, the child sex trafficking ring run through Boys Town in Nebraska, or the activities at Bohemian Grove. If you don't feel like having to do a lot of preliminary reading there are documentaries on these subjects posted on You Tube, as well as Wikipedia articles. Otherwise, the information you will learn from this book will be so shockingly horrible to you that you won't be able to believe it. I have a BA in Criminal Justice and a BA in Psychology and have studied plenty of disturbing things, but this book is the most disturbing thing I've ever read. What's most disturbing is this activity goes all the way up to our highest levels of government. The people who are supposed to protect us are actually the ones who are victimizing us. Get ready to unplug from the matrix, America.

The Deep State appears to be a brotherhood of individuals, crossing party lines, who seek to instill a One World Order and who seek to implement mind control psychology over their minions, ie, the rest of us. Cathy O’Brien chronicles her sickening life story as a mind controlled victim and names names of, as she calls them, perpe-TRAITORS. Some very familiar names are mentioned, the leader among them being George H. Bush. Even President Reagan is not exempt from the perversions encouraged in this mind controlled One World Order — and he freely and consciously partakes of these perversions. Another interesting fact to emerge is that NAFTA was born out of the CIA’s (Bush’s) desire to control the drug and sex trade traffic flowing across the Mexican border; this during the Reagan administration and at the same time President Reagan’s wife, Nancy Reagan, appealed as First Lady to “Just Say No” to drugs, as drugs were literally pouring into the country through CIA operations, many of which are chronicled in this book. My stomach turned throughout reading this book and I wonder if there are ANY men and women in power whom one can trust? This book is an awful, but necessary, revelation. I thank the authors and their bravery for writing it. It needs to be read by everyone who wants a country for their children and their children’s children. America is certainly not ready to be great again, although I applaud the current president for trying. He at least is steering the ship AWAY from a One World Order.

If you have been sheltered all of your life or curl up every night to read fiction romance or sci-fi after watching the main stream media news, then this book will be hardcore reading. Cathy has been through a lot and I’m not talking about petty things like losing a job. I wonder how she is still alive. The CIA’s MK Ultra program, project Monarch that her and her daughter survived may be beyond the realm of your imagination but is not beyond the realm of activities from the government officials or anyone with a great deal of wealth. How well do you know any of the elected officials? You only know what they want you to know. From all the names she called out in this book not one has come forward to defend their “good” name. Could it be because it would call further attention to them? After all, this would have to be taken to court as slander. Or could it be that it’s true? After all Bill Clinton did not have relations with that woman.!!! I admire Cathy for her openness and graphic accounts so that we can know what lies deep in the hearts of some of the people that ran/run this country and churches and their agendas. I’m writing this in Dec of 2015 and know that what she says is possible. Just look at our country now! There is no empathy, loyalty or constitution left “For the People”. It’s a good thing that Mark was around and cared enough to go through hell for those two. I’m just sorry for her, her daughter and the others who have a horrible story like that to tell. Nobody should ever have to go through that, children especially. It’s all so heinous. I would and have recommended this book to people I know that will appreciate Mark and Cathy’s story and learn from it.

FIVE STARS... not because I loved it... but because it helped me to connect some dots. This is a book that's best read in small doses. A complimentary book that needs to be read along side this book would be the 'Franklin Cover Up' by John W. DeCamp. I bought this book for $2.99 upon one of my former professor's recommendation. LOVE IT! Oden does a fantastic job citing all kinds of ancient writers - from the earliest Christians up to Bonhoeffer. For anyone who is interested in reading ancient Christian authors, many, many references are cited throughout this work so you know exactly which book by which author to look for on specific topics. While some books on doctrine work better as a reference work, this is surprisingly enjoyable to read. The information is presented in an almost conversational tone, which makes it easy to digest. You don't feel like you're just reading facts. You're learning more about faith and its particularities in an engaging way.I noticed one other person said the Kindle version has no table of contents. That's untrue. While the Kindle version has no link to take you to the table of contents, it does have an active table of contents to take you to the various chapters and the sections within each chapter. It's laid out very well and this book would be miserable to read on Kindle without this.

Comprehensive, well-written, and sometimes even entertaining. I hated having to read and study it for a class, but now I find it to be an invaluable resource. I go back and forth between the hardcopy and the Kindle version.

A comprehensive study of the most fundamental truths of the faith.

In this magisterial work, Thomas Oden seeks to say "nothing new" but rather to lay down an ecumenical systematic theology rooted in the ancients. This is a must-have for anyone who desires to learn from the rich theological history of the Christian tradition.

The best systematic theology text there is. This book is beyond partisan theology, and thus it is a must have for every theology student. Oden's use of primary sources, specifically early church fathers makes this book priceless. Chances are you will never be able to read the volumes of writing produced by the early church. Don't worry, you won't need to. Oden has collect all the relevant works across the spectrum and compiled this amazing work.If I had one frustration, it is that there is often little stated that is not actually a quote. Sometimes I wished Oden would have written or added his own summary of the material.

Revisiting this after 15 years, and I find some really good solid material. Oden takes the basic components of the Apostle's Creed and deconstructs, piece by piece, what makes this a living document for a 21st century Christian.

Well written, easy to follow orthodox Christian theology. An excellent read for any pastor, Bible student, or even lay person.

Not nuts about the recipes althoughthe technique and ease are appealing. I tried one of my own. It failed but modified ingredients in one of the author's te ipes and it was awesome. So except for the fact that the meat had some congealed stuff at the boytom and on some veggies(Like you would skim off when you boil chicken) I'm not unhappy. Clean up's a breeze and it's a challenge now to find recipes I like

I want to start out by saying that I am a mediocre cook at best. I am the type that needs to follow a recipe word for word, and even then my meals rarely turn out fantastic.Not with this book! I've had it for over a month now, and now well over half of my meals are made using it. Most recipes are really good. I say most, because some are really quite bland, but even then it was no worse than many of my former 'quick meals' I use to make. My former baked chicken, rice, and a veggie is right on par with the frozen chicken meal she has, and it doesn't get any worse than that!What I really love about this cookbook:- Everything is healthy- You can cook with frozen vegetables and meats- It's easy to add a variety of foods you wouldn't normally use- Vegetables turn out crisp, meats turn out tender- Rice used in recipes turns out PERFECT and soooo tasty- Foods don't mix flavors, but end up complimenting each other very very well.- My Husband now eats second helpings of vegetables. Sometimes he even cleans out the pot.Notes:- some of your food may get a little browned, especially rice. I don't mind it, but I know some people wouldn't like that. If you don't like it, adjust your time.- You don't need to double up your recipes to use the 5qt. Just take a few minutes off the total cooking time. I cook my meals 3-5 minutes less than she suggests, depending on the ingredients. You'll get a feel for it during your first few attempts.- Most recipes could use more salt. Usually when she says to sprinkle salt and pepper, I end up using about a tablespoon.- Many of the recipes call for half of a certain vegetable. Half a pepper, half a zucchini... If its only one vegetable like that in a recipe, I generally put the whole thing in if I know I'm not planning to use it in the future. Better than letting it rot in my fridge, and it seems to have no effect on the quality of the meal.My Favorite Recipes- Glorious Macaroni and Cheese (make sure to use a strong flavored cheese)- Fiesta Steak (sooo flavorful!)- Honey and Spice Pork (can be a little overpowering for some people)- Pacific Island Seafood (My husband raved about this one)- Ed's New England Fish Chowder (DON'T add extra salt)- Dill Salmon (Used fresh salmon, turned out spectacular)- Rosemary Chicken (I use more rosemary than recommended)All in all, this book has saved me not only time, but stopped us from eating out as much which of course saves us money. It's healthy, and it really doesn't hurt that I'm not buying Hamburger Helpless anymore! I actually get excited when I start my grocery list, because I can actually cook these meals. I know that my husband and I are eating so much better now than we were before.

I really like this recipe book. I got it with a Le Creuset 2 quart pot, and didn't quite know what to expect. When we follow these recipes to the letter, we have enough for 2 days of meals for 2 people - and my husband is a big eater and always goes for seconds. We have been using meals from this cookbook 2-3 days a week - we can't use it more frequently because even we can't eat that much food.The recipes are very healthy and full of vegetables, with some carbs, but would be easy to adjust for Atkins. So you eat balanced and healthy, mostly vegetables with some protein. I do find some of the recipes a bit bland and have started doubling the spices/flavorings to make them more to our tastes. Overall, highly recommended, especially if you're trying to incorporate more vegetables into your life, and want to eat healthy. We are happy to have the pot and the cookbook in our lives.

Amazing book that's a great companion to my new Le Creuset pot. I have been creating delicious meals that take 15 to 30 minutes of chopping and gathering. Then, the dish goes into a preheated oven and emerges as a wonderful French pot, full of nutritious and delicious food. I am delighted with this book. We got the French pot after a trip to Paris, and I feel like we have a little bit of France in our kitchen every day that I use the pot. I feel like this book enhances my culinary experience here.

I made the Red Curry chicken substituting green chard for the spinach and it was delicious. I had made similar meals in the crock pot last week, but the added flavor from infusion cooking is very noticeable and the food doesn't get mushy. I have the Staub 5 quart round cocotte. I heated it ahead of time and then cooked stovetop and it worked great. She does recommend putting it in the oven. It helps to read the introduction right away and then purchase the items you may not have in your pantry that you want for your recipes. She also makes suggestions for substituting ingredients and explains the layering process that she uses. She uses lots of vegetables with a balance of protein with each meal. I plan to try more recipes this week.

I really appreciate this book. As a single-parent who works full-time preparing healthy meals is always a challenge. Lots of cook books have great recipes but the meal planning is the most over-whelming part to me. Yarnell provides suggested pantry items and weekly shopping list suggestions. She explains her infusion technique and once I tried a few recipes it was easy to adapt to customize to our tastes, and turn favorite recipes into dutch oven meals. I really appreciate the concept of "healthy fast foods." Having foods in the freezer and pantry that won't expire quickly but that I can turn into a meal quickly is a relief at the end of a busy work day. I can throw food in the oven and then turn my attention to kids and homework while it cooks. In regards to the actual recipes, several of them do seem to be on the bland side but that is easy to adjust. I have mostly used the vegetarian and chicken recipes and they are worthwhile. Highly recommend this book!

This is by far and away the best book on painting I have ever seen. clear explanations teriffic tips and great step by step projectsI have looked at an bought many other books but wish I had seen this first, I would have saved lots of money. This is a book I struggled with. Overall, I love the general idea of the book: simplifying the ministry of the church to more effectively disciple people in their Christian walks. But there were a few elements which gave me pause:First, the emphasis upon research data. They touch on the fact that a healthy church is not about numbers, but about people living as God called them, but that acknowledgement is buried beneath chapter and chapters which point towards the size or numerical growth of a church as an indicator of whether or not it was healthy. I love research data, but there were also times when their research indicated that there were a decent amount of churches which did not meet their definition of "simple" yet were still thriving. This latter reality did not seem to be addressed. I would have appreciated at least a chapter or (minimally) a few pages discussing why this might "work." But most troubling, the emphasis upon data instead of an emphasis upon what a healthy spirituality looks like.Second, there is minimal scriptural support for the principles expressed in the book. This is the most troubling to me. While scripture is quoted and referenced (in some chapters more sparingly than others), upon a closer examination frequently the scripture doesn't actually support or advocate the point. It is used illustratively or to support a peripheral point supporting the main thesis of the chapter. All this adds up to a "sense" of scriptural support, but without there really being too much solid, scriptural exegesis supporting the points of the book. The research data supports it, but the scriptural support is weak (in this, I'm referring to what is communicated in the book; Rainer and Geiger are smart guys, and I'm sure they have more scriptural support than they actually communicated in the book).Third, I was sorely disappointed by the lack of an articulation of any sort of ecclesiology in the book. I think this flows from the first two problems mentioned above. Better scriptural support would have led them to summarize scripture in a theological manner, which would have led to at least a minimal articulation (a single chapter, at least) outlining primary biblical elements of a church. For what this book was arguing. With the subtitle "Returning to God's Process for Making Disciples" a failure to adequately point towards some biblical foundations for discipleship for a church (even if these would be general values) is a pretty huge oversight. This book is, at best, a book focusing on leadership principles for leading a religious organization. But the leadership principles advocated are more commercially based than scripturally founded.Lastly, the writers refer to themselves as "nerds" and the book as a "nerdy" book. As a "nerd" myself, I found the simplistic writing style of the book insulting and ultimately detrimental to the book's argument. The simplicity glossed over elements which needed a deeper treatment. I suspect the simple writing style was an attempt for the execution of the argument to match the title, but as a pastor who wanted to really dig his teeth into this idea, I was left with more questions than answers.The reason I really wrestle with recommending this book, and why (in the end) I gave it four stars instead of three, is that overall the book does advocate some good principles which actually have some scriptural merit. Unfortunately I think the book over-values its research data (an entirely different cultural and social problem in the West), and that undercuts how a leader should be truly evaluating his/her church: through eyes and values shaped by scriptures. Rainer and Geiger do not deny the latter (they actually advocate it in the postscript), but their practice in the book elevates data points over scriptural exegesis.Can it be a helpful book? Yes...but it need to be balanced with other books that do proper exegetical and ecclesiological book. This book would probably best be used after studying books that do the proper scriptural and theological work, because then the ideas contained in Simple Church could be critiqued and analyzed in light of the scriptural and exegetical work that has already been explored.

I should write an elaborated review of this book. But alas, time.Overall, the intention of the 2 authors is solid and helpful for certain church applications. One thing that these two guys do well is pushing the mandate for making disciples. As it is, well, a mandate. The American church does a horrid job of bringing this transformation to our countrymen.My major letdowns with the book are three-fold:1. The thinking is very well-developed, but the writing is painfully repetitive, even in the first three chapters. By the time you reach chapter six, it's unbearable. I can see the value in repeating information that's brand-new to some older folks. But this goes way beyond what's necessary.2. My second letdown with the book may have to do with the authors' generations. They do a fanatastic job in celebrating the various ways "simple church" can be applied broadly across the body. But when it comes down to it, it vastly oversimplifies the diversity in that same body, and completely overlooks God's designing these tens of thousands of communities differently, on purpose. After reading thru, their approach is good but applies a one-size-fits-all approach to making churches simple. Fine. But there is a huge loss in individuality as under their guidance, it seems churches would lose sight of the niche things they were created for.3. A third thing: although the Sunday church may not disappear any time soon, they state in the book the worldwide bricks and mortar church is in great decline. That is clear and well-documented for two decades now.But they don't seem to address why. Old, simplistic church models and old mindsets seem to be the reason. The younger generation wants less and less to do with a Sunday service, or any formal service, regardless of how "innovative" they may appear. So the whole model of "inviting people to church" presumably to get saved and be transformed (made into disciples) is horribly outdated and painfully oblivious of the modern culture we all live in. And by the way, Jesus told [us] to go. Not to tell others to [come] to church.Ah, the comfort mindset of our people.I'm sorry for the criticisms. Though these authors do a decent, albeit cumbersome, job in explaining the simple church approach, it's almost like: too little too late for our generation. We need models for doing community [outside] the four walls rather than new models for getting people to come to a bland and demeaning and disrespected existence. Just because a simple church may appear to be thriving doesn't indicate that they're doing all they were designed to do. We settle for so little, it's disheartening to watch.Cmon people, God never intended the Body of Christ to beckon the world to tie themselves to the four wall model.The most powerful transformation doesn't happen in the Sunday services anyway. The authors even say that Sunday's aren't where real community happens. Transformation (not just for church-goers, but for the rest of the world) happens when the church dispersed and made themselves useful [in] the world, not by camping out on Sundays (or midweek). ie: God forcing them out of their comfortable lifestyles into the needy world by sending Roman persecution on them. There's a lot to be said for getting discipled on-the-way when you're already in motion [outside] the church and productive in the world.Ok, the book is fine. It's a decent read for those stuck in church, especially if they lack cohesive vision and a simple strategy for discipling. But it would've been better back in the 1960's and 70's when churches stared to get too complicated. These days, I'd say it's a very basic starting point. For other world-focused believers and ministries, "simple church" can help streamline your thought processes. But please apply it and move on. There's so much to do and so little time.

This is another great book by Thom Rainer! I am a new comer, functioning as Associate Pastor, at a church that fits the description of both the Simple Church and of a "Break-Out Church" (see Rainer's book on the subject). The senior pastor has been at the church for over 20 years and when I arrived, I was excited to share with him that I believed the church fit the description of a break-out church. Then I read Simple Church (actually listened to it on Audible) and told the pastor about how the church fit the description. The pastor said that he had taken the congregation through that book and that they really enjoyed it. The insights and principles shared in this book work! I see it everyday at Mt. Calvary!
