Simply the best short story collection in the history of Science Fiction. Given the extraordinary hubris of Mr. Ellison, it's amazing that for once his swagger is warranted. At its core is a collection of better-than-average short stories by a bunch of the writers circa mid-60s. But what makes this collection is Harlan's foreward, and the authors' rebuttals of that in their own afterwords, and their reflections on their own writings. In this version Harlan adds another layer of reflection on the lives of the authors who have now passed away or otherwise faded from view. Entertaining as sci-fi and fascinating for anyone who aspires to writing.

The best part of this book is Harlan Ellison's introductions. He's got two for the book and one for each story. That makes 33 total. The man likes to write and it shows. Another thing that comes through is the respect that he holds for his writers. He truly loves them and their stories. It's hard for the reader to not get caught up when the editor himself is such an adamant cheerleader.I have to admit I didn't find much of it dangerous, but I could see that that wouldn't have been true back when it was first published. We're different now and what we've seen in our entertainment has changed much in the last 40 years. We've matured. Most of the stories are well written, though, and it doesn't matter if they are no longer dangerous. Carol Emshwiller's writing style is as fresh now as it was back in the 60s. Same with PKD. Great discoveries for me include the Hollywood writer: Howard Rodman; the weird writer: David R. Bunch; the beautiful writer: Roger Zelazny; the tried and true writer: Lester Del Rey.The most dangerous story here was Theodore Sturgeon's. It was a tale of accepted incest. Still controversial and weird in my opinion. I am a fan of Sturgeon's work, but I must say, this story felt overwritten to me. A disappointment almost. He's a great writer and I enjoyed the ride, but it did go on a bit.Good book to have in your collection because there are so many references to it. And when it comes to science fiction, anything new is old after a decade, so you can't expect it to remain astounding, amazing, dangerous forever.The main thing is the literary quality. It's tops. That more than anything else has kept this book on the required reading pile. You could have worse homework.

Sam looks around him for some way to use his great wealth to make this dying place a little better. He sees no hope. So he turns his attention to who will inherit when he is gone.Piers Anthony's "In the Barn" is built around the existence of parallel realities, each with its own Earth, solar system, stars, etc. Some realities differ greatly from ours, some differ only slightly. Hitch is an investigator who travels between realities to evaluate differences from our own and the advisability of official contact. In his latest investigation he makes a close contact within Reality #772's dairy industry and learns the importance of proper breeding.Ben Bova's "Zero Gee" is a roommate story. Chet, Jill, and Linda spend a few days in a space station on a mission for the U.S. Air Force. There isn't a lot of privacy. And sometimes three really is a crowd. `Nuff said.And there is even some interesting poetry by Ray Bradbury. There are some good stories here. Most do not have that frantic, trying-too-hard-to-shock feel that was too much present in the first volume. Perhaps the nearly ten years that passed between the two publication dates had something to do with it. The new voices were starting to become the voices we were used to. Whatever the reason, the result is a better collection of stories. Enjoy!

Based more on some written notes I found tucked inside than on any concrete memory of the book, it looks like my favorite stories were "Roll Them Bones" (Leiber), "Lord Randy, My Son" (Hensley), "Judas" (Brunner), "Auto-Da-Fé" (Zelazny), and "Aye, and Gomorrah" (Delany). Highlights also included the afterwards written by Zelazny and Delany for their respective stories. Zelazny's is an explanation of what a writer does, and Delany's is an explanation of sci-fi itself.

It did surprise me that he continues to claim that no other diet has been proven to reverse heart disease. This just isn't true, and considering how much research he does into this area he must know it isn't true. We have the 2005 study done by a major medical university in Israel that studied heart disease reversal using three diets. The first was low fat (really 30%) the 2nd was the Med diet, and the 3rd was a low carb diet of all things. All three showed reversal of heart disease. And yes, there was weight loss in all three groups. However, the correlation with reversal didn't come from weight loss. In other words those who lost the most weight didn't have the most reversal. The researchers DID find a direct correlation of one single factor when it came to reversal of heart disease, and that was with Systolic blood pressure. The more systolic blood pressure fell the greater was the reversal. Thanks to these researchers we now know the mechanism for heart disease reversal. How is it that all three diets saw drops in Systolic blood pressure and therefore reversal? That's fairly simple. What all three diets had in common was elimination of processed food, and therefore the 80% of salt that the average person eats. It was salt restriction that led to the drop in blood pressure and therefore the reversal of disease. It was interesting that it wasn't animal products, or for that matter fat regardless of saturated or otherwise. Does this make sense? Well, way back in the 30's, 40's and 50'l a guy by the name of Walter Kempner reversed kidney disease, deadly high blood pressure and heart failure by restricting sodium to under 60 mg a day. He diet was white rice, fruit and almost a thousand calories of white sugar. Once he retired those that took over became less restrictive on other vegetable, some meat and fish, BUT they maintained the low sodium aspect of the diet. It still worked using 500 mg of sodium a day. They had the same success. We then had the Inter-salt study. The handful of societies that consumed under 1,200 mg of sodium a day had no high blood pressure, no heart disease, no kidney disease and no type 2. IT'S THE SALT. Is his program a good one? Sure. Plant based is good, but plant exclusive (vegan) is not absolutely necessary. He never gets around to explaining how the Blue Zones folks in various parts of the world live to be one hundred without being vegan, or for that matter low fat. The fat consumed ranges anywhere from fifteen percent to forty percent depending on which Blue Zone area you consider. And of course almost all of them are omnivore.

I've been following the Whole Foods, Plant Based lifestyle doctors for a few months now. I ran across a podcast of Dr. and Mrs. Ornish recently and loved what I heard. This prompted me to buy the book. I have to say now that the WFPB lifestyle has been tremendous in reversing and healing issues I've had for years.The book is packed with great information on eating, moving, de-stressing, and loving. Plain and simple advice for living a healthy life. Lots of great recipes, too. There is a lot of scientific information and studies presented that really backs up this lifestyle.The only issue I have is that the book continuously promotes their program. This would be a bad thing, but there are no venues anywhere close to where I live (mid-north Tennessee). Insurance may cover their program, but I doubt my insurance will pay for me to travel somewhere distant to take it. With it promoting the benefits of the program, I feel I am missing out; that I'm only getting partial information since I can't participate in the program. Especially with the group benefits. And, there wasn't any contact information on their site for those of us wanting to ask questions about it; only for booking.While I love the book, I think I would prefer less promoting of the program and keep the book to what you can do from the book.

After owning, using, and enjoying most of Dr Ornish's books, I truly believe this one is his best. I've read through and the recipes appear very doable and delicious. His material is substantiated with special and extraordinary scientific studies. However I'm finding his 2 week starting plan where you can use frozen food dinners etc. to be especially helpful. Since I'm a heart patient, I believe this book will be my next guide to better health. I'll update this offering after I've begun this helpful guide to better a refreshing lifestyle.

If you like Doom and/or Quake, you need to read this book. It details the lives and stories of John Carmack and John Romero, two guys who took a dominating stranglehold on the early PC game market and didn't let go. This book is incredibly detailed and you can tell that is was meticulously researched, with firsthand accounts from both Romero and Carmack, along with many other important people. The book reads more like a story than a typical biographical book, which keeps it light and interesting. After finishing the book I have nothing buy admiration for everyone involved. What these guys did in such a short time will never be repeated, and we have a lot of them to thank for how far video games have come today.Overall highly recommended, excellent book, stayed up all night reading it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book.I'm really impressed on how things turn out for the guys that created DOOM. They were successful in tech and gaming but they weren't able to handle so much in so little time. None of the Johns were able to see that they needed each other.I think the book is summarized by a great analogy presented by the author: Carmack was the guitar maker and Romero was the musician that could get the best songs out of them.I really recommend buying this book, it gets interesting from the beginning and it grips you until the end. I even read the index hoping there would be more stories post 2003.

Solid read about a group and especially two personalities that helped shape gaming and entertainment. Good pacing and detail though you could tell the author went out of his way to be careful in presenting any analysis or opinion (which is important with living and breathing subjects). Even with the "middle of the road" storytelling, it was easy to place yourself in the story and understand the dynamics because you know these people in your life. Would have liked to have more of the actual business detail of id but its not a business book so not enough to cause any loss of value.

In the middle of 1995 I was building my self a PC, but not any PC but a powerful one with an incredible big, one gigabyte hard disk connected through a super speed SCSII card, a lot of RAM and a cutting-edge graphics card. Besides the thrill to build a powerful computer by myself, the expectations of what I will be able to do was really stimulating. Yes, one of the motivations was to be able to play the new game of id Software, Quake. And that was just the first PC I built in order to keep the pace of id games. Not that I was a video game addict but I was really fascinated with the technology, the immersive illusion of virtual reality I felt when playing the previous game, Doom, even with its crude unrealistic graphics. And with Quake, I can't and should ignore the hours I spent playing by my self and with friends in tournaments and team playing through the Internet. That was a lot of time of my youth but without a written history I could feel that it was like a dream. Fortunately, David Kushner did it with this book.Long and well-researched account of an important part of the history of the subculture of violent and high tech video games and their creators, their lives, failures and technological adventures. I really enjoyed this reading and I recommend it not only for those who lived part of this recent history but for everyone who want to learn about this important subculture.

I won't be saying anything from the actual reading itself because I don't want to ruin anything, but this book is great I haven't been able to but it down since I received it. When I was recommended this book I thought I like Doom and the impact it made to the gaming industry and stuff like that, so I thought I'd give it a read. The quality of the book itself from what I can tell is pretty good I haven't had it for very long but after one read through it's still holding together, so that's good in my opinion. Summing up what I said, read this book.

This book is a phenomenal look into the creation of one of gaming most innovative companies ever! It takes you from the very beginning when the "Two Johns" and crew started working together at Softdisk in Shreveport, LA. to the behemoth is became during the releases of Doom and it's sequel. The journey is told without any form of censorship to any of the members or their egos and really gives insight into how friends can completely turn against each other when business gets in the way. If you're at all interested in gaming history (or business) then this is a MUST read for you. I only wish they would release an updated version so we could know exactly how things have continued as the book ends during the 2004 year.Final Verdict: This is a MUST read!!!!

When DOOM came out, me and a buddy of mine were hooked so bad on this game we'd speak about our addiction in hushed tones. It was like nothing I ever experienced.Masters of DOOM tells the story of the "Two Johns," John Carmack and John Romero, creators of DOOM and founders of ID software. It's a story of amazing success and spectacular failure, personality conflicts and political witch-hunts. I found the early history of PCs and the sub-culture of game players and hackers enlightening.I recently took a trip down memory lane and played through DOOM 1 and DOOM 2. This book was the perfect companion piece.

Balanchine's reputation as a choreographer is so immense that his personality can be eclipsed, at least for those who never knew him. Gottlieb, an ardent fan since 1948, did come to know him a bit while serving on the board of New York City Ballet. In this brief yet energetic biography, he moves briskly through an extraordinarily eventful life. The early chapters detail Balanchine's fine musical education in Russia (piano, harmony, counterpoint), his dancing (curtailed by an injury when he was in his twenties), and his many false starts as he tried to gain a foot-hold in the West. A colleague of the period recalled performances in an insane asylum and a beer garden ("We followed a dog act"). Once in the States, Balanchine embraced every aspect of his new home, working on Broadway and in Hollywood, wearing bolo ties, and—in such works as "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue"—adapting the vocabulary of classical dance to the rhythms of America. I read just about everything on ballet there is. This was terrific and gave me an entirely different perspective on GB than I'd previously had. What a person!

a great follow up book to Balanchine and the Lost Muse. It picks up almost precisely where the other book ends, just as Balanchine is getting ready to launch his fabulous career.

Definitely of interest to any fan of the Balanchine choreography, and of the unique man himself. Enjoyable book, recommended to any balletomane.

This is a sad moment. I can't sugar coat it.This volume is for the most part a picture book filled with illustrations and photographs, many which I had never seen (which is saying something, as I am well studied in 2001: a space odyssey). BRILLIANT research and lovely photos. This review will focus on this aspect of the book.The book comes in a rather astounding format... and as 6.9x15x1.6... clearly meant to resemble the monolith and its famous 1:4:9 ratio.And I thought, "Brilliant... artful and will allow the wide Cinemascope imagery (at 2.21:1 or 2.35:1)... requiring that the book be held wide left to right to resemble a cinema screen.In a decision that will go down in book history as unfathomably stupid, the book is instead "broken" and hinged sitting tall. It feels much like reading a double tall version of a newspaper. This format is fine for reading the accompanying text.In what will go down as one of the most horrific decisions in book making history... these amazing and rare photos and illustrations are force fit into pages that have a useable space of about 6 inches wide, and 14 inches tall. This makes presentation of these glorious visuals an impossible task... either the images have to be shrunk to postcard size... or, and this is almost criminal... the image must be split, down the center, across the book spline. OH. MY. GOD. The CENTER of these amazing images... hopelessly lost in the curving folds between adjacent pages. (see accompanying photos to this review).These images might have been a gold mine for scale model references... or just appreciated for their historical value or beauty... but are now marred by being split in two.In an apparent effort to deal with this madness, there are many fold out pages, but even these have a crease, and the printing ink on my copy was not happy to remain on the paper at these folds... leaving a white line at the crease. Given we are dealing with a visual film of space, white lines cutting vertically through black are somewhat noticeable!To top it off, the paper seems to be of questionable quality. Generally, coffee table books like these are on heavy high gloss paper, but this paper is decidedly dull and brings a lifeless quality to the images.I wish I had better news about this book. If you can stand to have your heart crushed by how these astounding and rare images are defiled, then I suppose you might consider adding this title to your library.This book screams loudly for another edition... reformatted, in an orientation and aspect fitting to the heart of the work: the visual material.

It seems that someone is setting up multiple "names" so they can file reviews once a month with 5 stars, titled "Five Stars" each time. At least I assume so; they're identical, and fall in a narrow time window. Without them this book would have a far lower rating. I bought it without doing my usual reading of reviews, so I guess it's my fault that I was so severely disappointed in the book, but everything that's been said about its ridiculous formatting and infuriating placement of images across pages rather than rotating to fit a single page is true. My specific goal was to find the unique info on the Pan Am Orion clipper that I'd been told was here, but those photos were split across pages so there's nothing useful I can gain without cutting the spine off the book, extracting the pages I need, and doing a hi-res scan so I can digitally put the two halves together. To those questioning whether other reviewers have been too unkind, and who instead want to focus on the richness of the material, consider this: Fold-outs are used to accommodate minor characters' headshots in good order, but Dr Heywood Floyd's is split across pages, so the middle of his face disappears down the crease. And similar things abound throughout the book. What a severe disappointment after I'd been so excited by the promised content! And I see no way to return the book; it's not "defective" or "damaged" or any of the other categories Amazon gives you to justify sending it back, it's just a bad product. No matter how good the content itself may be, it's presented so poorly as to be useless for the purposes for which I ordered it.

First, I am one of the people fortunate enough to have seen the film during its initial release (although not in one of the “Road Shows”) and have been a constant fan, watching it almost annually ever since, and re-reading the novel at least six or seven times. I’ve also read many books and articles on 2001, so I’m well extremely familiar with the subject. I’m always game for anything new dealing with it, so I decided to buy this book, despite some of the negative reviews.While I’m still glad I bought it, I have to say I’m in total agreement with those who have expressed negative reviews regarding the physical format and quality of the book. While the ratio is meant to evoke the Monolith, it ruins the wonderful (many rare) photos inside. In a book that is about a movie whose chief impact is VISUAL, this is unforgivable. Yes, the price is low, at least when I bought it in late 2017, but I’d be willing to pay two to three times this amount for this book in a format that allows you to see the photos in their entirety.The information contained is wonderful, and is appropriate for casual and serious fans of the film and of Kubrick. There is plenty of material right from the “horses’ mouths” (both Kubrick and Clarke), although much less from Clarke, which I found a little disappointing. Plus tons of material from many others directly involved in creating the movie.Fans of film will also love this book for its trove of information on how movies are made and how creative minds work to present art and wonder to us, the viewers.So my bottom line is this: Yes, it’s worth buying, but be warned that the format will likely frustrate and/or disappoint you. My wish would be for this book to be re-printed in a regular coffee table format. If the publishers really want to use the cute Monolith in some way, then include a small “collectors item” of it in the package.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wishes to learn sign.

We own all of these books and love working on fluency with our bilingual kiddo. Some of the signs are initialized (sadly), regional or antiquated. I want able to find out what the source is for the signs, whether a specific Deaf community member, a certain dictionary, or something else. I wish it was listed somewhere on the back cover.

My daughter is young yet but I plan to show the kids at daycare to help them learn sign language. I think this book will do just that.

Great resource for learning to sign with your little one. Also works well for them to point at what they need using the books illustrations. Book is well made and pages are durable.

great idea for teaching children sign language. I don't know what age it is appropriate for. My grandson is 3 and has a hard time keeping attention to the book. Maybe when he is older it will be a better tool.

Has a few signs that are incorrect but overall a good first learning tool.
