Balanchine's reputation as a choreographer is so immense that his personality can be eclipsed, at least for those who never knew him. Gottlieb, an ardent fan since 1948, did come to know him a bit while serving on the board of New York City Ballet. In this brief yet energetic biography, he moves briskly through an extraordinarily eventful life. The early chapters detail Balanchine's fine musical education in Russia (piano, harmony, counterpoint), his dancing (curtailed by an injury when he was in his twenties), and his many false starts as he tried to gain a foot-hold in the West. A colleague of the period recalled performances in an insane asylum and a beer garden ("We followed a dog act"). Once in the States, Balanchine embraced every aspect of his new home, working on Broadway and in Hollywood, wearing bolo ties, and—in such works as "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue"—adapting the vocabulary of classical dance to the rhythms of America. I read just about everything on ballet there is. This was terrific and gave me an entirely different perspective on GB than I'd previously had. What a person!

a great follow up book to Balanchine and the Lost Muse. It picks up almost precisely where the other book ends, just as Balanchine is getting ready to launch his fabulous career.

Definitely of interest to any fan of the Balanchine choreography, and of the unique man himself. Enjoyable book, recommended to any balletomane.

This is a sad moment. I can't sugar coat it.This volume is for the most part a picture book filled with illustrations and photographs, many which I had never seen (which is saying something, as I am well studied in 2001: a space odyssey). BRILLIANT research and lovely photos. This review will focus on this aspect of the book.The book comes in a rather astounding format... and as 6.9x15x1.6... clearly meant to resemble the monolith and its famous 1:4:9 ratio.And I thought, "Brilliant... artful and will allow the wide Cinemascope imagery (at 2.21:1 or 2.35:1)... requiring that the book be held wide left to right to resemble a cinema screen.In a decision that will go down in book history as unfathomably stupid, the book is instead "broken" and hinged sitting tall. It feels much like reading a double tall version of a newspaper. This format is fine for reading the accompanying text.In what will go down as one of the most horrific decisions in book making history... these amazing and rare photos and illustrations are force fit into pages that have a useable space of about 6 inches wide, and 14 inches tall. This makes presentation of these glorious visuals an impossible task... either the images have to be shrunk to postcard size... or, and this is almost criminal... the image must be split, down the center, across the book spline. OH. MY. GOD. The CENTER of these amazing images... hopelessly lost in the curving folds between adjacent pages. (see accompanying photos to this review).These images might have been a gold mine for scale model references... or just appreciated for their historical value or beauty... but are now marred by being split in two.In an apparent effort to deal with this madness, there are many fold out pages, but even these have a crease, and the printing ink on my copy was not happy to remain on the paper at these folds... leaving a white line at the crease. Given we are dealing with a visual film of space, white lines cutting vertically through black are somewhat noticeable!To top it off, the paper seems to be of questionable quality. Generally, coffee table books like these are on heavy high gloss paper, but this paper is decidedly dull and brings a lifeless quality to the images.I wish I had better news about this book. If you can stand to have your heart crushed by how these astounding and rare images are defiled, then I suppose you might consider adding this title to your library.This book screams loudly for another edition... reformatted, in an orientation and aspect fitting to the heart of the work: the visual material.

It seems that someone is setting up multiple "names" so they can file reviews once a month with 5 stars, titled "Five Stars" each time. At least I assume so; they're identical, and fall in a narrow time window. Without them this book would have a far lower rating. I bought it without doing my usual reading of reviews, so I guess it's my fault that I was so severely disappointed in the book, but everything that's been said about its ridiculous formatting and infuriating placement of images across pages rather than rotating to fit a single page is true. My specific goal was to find the unique info on the Pan Am Orion clipper that I'd been told was here, but those photos were split across pages so there's nothing useful I can gain without cutting the spine off the book, extracting the pages I need, and doing a hi-res scan so I can digitally put the two halves together. To those questioning whether other reviewers have been too unkind, and who instead want to focus on the richness of the material, consider this: Fold-outs are used to accommodate minor characters' headshots in good order, but Dr Heywood Floyd's is split across pages, so the middle of his face disappears down the crease. And similar things abound throughout the book. What a severe disappointment after I'd been so excited by the promised content! And I see no way to return the book; it's not "defective" or "damaged" or any of the other categories Amazon gives you to justify sending it back, it's just a bad product. No matter how good the content itself may be, it's presented so poorly as to be useless for the purposes for which I ordered it.

First, I am one of the people fortunate enough to have seen the film during its initial release (although not in one of the â€œRoad Showsâ€) and have been a constant fan, watching it almost annually ever since, and re-reading the novel at least six or seven times. Iâ€™ve also read many books and articles on 2001, so Iâ€™m well extremely familiar with the subject. Iâ€™m always game for anything new dealing with it, so I decided to buy this book, despite some of the negative reviews.While Iâ€™m still glad I bought it, I have to say Iâ€™m in total agreement with those who have expressed negative reviews regarding the physical format and quality of the book. While the ratio is meant to evoke the Monolith, it ruins the wonderful (many rare) photos inside. In a book that is about a movie whose chief impact is VISUAL, this is unforgivable. Yes, the price is low, at least when I bought it in late 2017, but Iâ€™d be willing to pay two to three times this amount for this book in a format that allows you to see the photos in their entirety.The information contained is wonderful, and is appropriate for casual and serious fans of the film and of Kubrick. There is plenty of material right from the â€œhorsesâ€™ mouthsâ€ (both Kubrick and Clarke), although much less from Clarke, which I found a little disappointing. Plus tons of material from many others directly involved in creating the movie.Fans of film will also love this book for its trove of information on how movies are made and how creative minds work to present art and wonder to us, the viewers.So my bottom line is this: Yes, itâ€™s worth buying, but be warned that the format will likely frustrate and/or disappoint you. My wish would be for this book to be re-printed in a regular coffee table format. If the publishers really want to use the cute Monolith in some way, then include a small â€œcollectors itemâ€ of it in the package.

This book is awesome! My two year old is hearing impaired and I ordered most of the books in this series. I am impressed with the the way the author and illustrators have put this book together. It is the easiest book I have found to teach not only myself and my daughter sign, but also for my other school aged children to learn as well. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wishes to learn sign.

We own all of these books and love working on fluency with our bilingual kiddo. Some of the signs are initialized (sadly), regional or antiquated. I want able to find out what the source is for the signs, whether a specific Deaf community member, a certain dictionary, or something else. I wish it was listed somewhere on the back cover.

My daughter is young yet but I plan to show the kids at daycare to help them learn sign language. I think this book will do just that.

Great resource for learning to sign with your little one. Also works well for them to point at what they need using the books illustrations. Book is well made and pages are durable.

great idea for teaching children sign language. I don't know what age it is appropriate for. My grandson is 3 and has a hard time keeping attention to the book. Maybe when he is older it will be a better tool.

I specifically liked the author's writing style, the pacing of the book, the amount of information, the included pictures, and the subject himself. I grew up with Jim Henson's creations, whether on Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, or elsewhere. The Muppets started right around when television as a mass medium took off, and were a success a full ten years before the creation of Sesame Street. Henson was quick to realize the potential of television, and pioneered many innovative production techniques. By the time of his sudden death in 1990 (he was only 53), he ran a sprawling entertainment empire with operations in New York, London, California and Canada.Although a few aspects of the book get a little repetitive (yes, we know he worked hard and enjoyed doing so), this is clearly the definitive work on Henson's life. Jones had full access to many people and to Henson's archives, quoting frequently from his diary, letters, and other original sources.Kirby Heyborne's performance for the audiobook is unique. It's the first time I've listened to a book read where the narrator actively imitates the voices of various people quoted in the book. Henson is read with a mild southern drawl, associates in London have British accents, and Kermit sounds like Kermit. Again I repeat my plea to the publisher: Please package using MP3 CD's, which have been a thing for over a decade now.

I went in wholly expecting to have wasted my $2.99 based on my overall lack of enjoyment of novellas in general, but this? This was superb. In fact, if this golden nugget had somehow been weaved into book one, even as an afterthought, wrap-up, or extended epilogue, I would have give TCP a higher rating than I initially doled out. One of the reasons I wasn't blown away with the first installment was due to my lack of connection to the characters and world; this slight tale connected all the pieces that were floating in my periphery during my first read.While at first I was sitting around, pouting and telling myself "She can't force me to like Taryn, stop trying to make Taryn happen!", I quickly realized that Holly Black was not, in fact, trying to force this character down my throat. I'll go as far as to suggest that this minute character study is present to fill in a few gaps, sure, but also to reinforce what a truly unlikable character Taryn is, and her journey on discovering just how far she's willing to go and what she's actually capable of. I won't spoil anything for you, but reading this little treasure has made me eager for the release of The Wicked King, where before I was apathetic and resigned to continuing on just to see what happens."Be bold, be bold, but not too bold, lest that your heart's blood should run cold."

The Lost Sisters is an e-novella that provides Tarynâ€™s , Judeâ€™s twin sisterâ€™s, point of view of the events that took place in The Cruel Prince. And you guys, it feels so good to back in Elfhame even if it is through a handful of pages. I enjoyed this short story because we get another personâ€™s perspective of the twisted dynamics that play between Cardan and Jude. And more importantly, we watch and understand the relationship that blooms between Taryn and Locke. UGH, and LOCKE! He is such a weasel. I hope his trickster ways finally catch up to him.I also liked that Taryn puts her heart and soul in this confession to Judeâ€“we begin to understand Tarynâ€™s motivations and heartache. But overall, even with Tarynâ€™s actions explained, I still do not sympathize with her.Taryn, what happened to sisters before misters?!Home fries before fae guys!Taryn, I swear, you need to get it together, because Jude doesnâ€™t take betrayal too lightly!

Let me just say this first: I adore Holly Black's writing. She has a penchant for creating engaging characters inhabiting vibrant worlds, and her plots are always complex with unexpected twists. Sadly, much of this was missing from this novella.The Lost Sisters is told from the point of view of Taryn, the twin sister of Jude who is the protagonist of The Cruel Prince and upcoming The Wicked King. Taryn is largely thrust aside in The Cruel Prince and yet plays a key role in the ultimate plot so I was hoping for some insight into her character and motivations. While we are given a few glimpses into her character and even her motivations in The Cruel Prince, this novella is essentially a recap of some of the key events in TCP with a half-hearted attempt at an apology to Jude from her twin. I'd really hoped for more a more insightful reading of Taryn that would make me like her a little more, but alas, that didn't happen, and I like her even less now.Holly Black's mastery of words is still there, and it was nice to return to the realm of Elfhame for a time. However, I enjoyed the sneak peek of The Wicked King included at the end of The Lost Sisters better than the actual novella.

Sneak preview for Wicked King inside!Cruel Prince spoilers!We got Judeâ€™s story. Now we see the events of Cruel Prince from Tarynâ€™s point of view. How did she end up with Locke? How could she hide this from her sister? What was going through her head when they were thrown to the nixies, or Jude participated in the tournament? We get these answers in the form of a letter from Taryn to Jude apologizing for her transgressions. A fairy tale to tide us over until Wicked King releases in January.I love Holly Black. Iâ€™ve read all but one of her books, I love the fae creatures and magic and her grungy settings that contrast with the beauty of the fairy world. However, I felt let down with this novella. I was expecting more content, maybe the story of the sisters before Madoc came for them. Instead I got what amounts to a recap of the first book, but from another characterâ€™s perspective. Other than a few interactions between Taryn and Locke, there were no extra scenes or information that we did not already know or could infer on our own. The story is also told in second person narrative (which addresses the audience as you). It didnâ€™t bother me too much, but I know some people hate it so I thought I would mention it here. In short, even though the writing was beautiful this story did not need to be told.The saving grace was the excerpt of Wicked King at the end. Had it not been for the sneak-peak I would have given the story two stars instead of three. However, with that small snippet from chapter one of the next book I got more additional content than I did from the novella itself. We see Cardan as king interacting with his court, Jude pulling the strings from behind the throne, Locke up to something nefarious. This is what I wanted from the novella.Holly Black is, as always, a gorgeous writer with engaging settings; but this story has been told before. Other than the sneak peak at Wicked King at the end, you can skip this book.If you loved Cruel Prince and want more Holly Black, try some of her other books (which are amazing!) I particularly like the Curse Workers series, Tithe, The Darkest Part of the Forest, and Spiderwick

The book presents Larry's career in a very honest way showing the long days but exciting times in being a financial consultant to successful companies. Larry's personal story made the book an easy read and you felt a strong connection to him and the Arthur Andersen firm and personnel. I recommend the book highly.

Great story from an insider's journey with Arthur Anderson. The book reinforces what a travesty of justice occurred when Arthur Andersen was unjustly indicted by the US Department Of Justice. Although the Supreme Court subsequently overturned the conviction of the Firm, it is a small consolation to the men and women whose lives were turned upside down when Arthur Andersen was forced out of business.

I am a former Andersen partner so this story was close to my heart. This has great insight into the family and client relationships that Big 4 CPAs face. It is a wonderful behind the scenes view of a career in the profession and is a great read for anyone interested in this area.

I bought this book expecting a whodunit on the Enron scandal from the Arthur Andersen perspective but instead got a career AA partner's 300 page resume. If I had written the book, I might have done 2 chapters at most about the author's early background for context and then really drilled down into the key period (from the AC divorce on forward) that preceded the Enron affair and the impact it had on setting up the accounting scandal. I agree what the DOJ did to the firm was a miscarriage of justice, but AA could have handled things better, especially with respect to mitigating conflict of interest between audit and business consulting.

It is a primer on how to network,relationship building, business ethics and how destructive our government can be. There are excellent business tips within.

Interesting read, it's more detail on the inside of working at Anderson. These guy work really hard, but they play too, at expensive places.....All in all i did find it interesting, the demise of this firm was tragic and wiped out many people that i cared about, almost overnight....

Interesting, especially for Certified Public Accountants that were working in the business during the 60's to 90's. Gives an idea of what was expected in the profession.

This book was good for simple, basic overheads for patios and/or decks. It gave some limited plans and recommendations for lumber. It also listed a variety of roofing materials but was somewhat unspecific on the pros and cons of each. We liked what the book did offer, but finished it feeling rather unsatisfied.

Helpful information, but not as good as "Gazebos & Other Structures". I'm not sure that the editors actually have built any of the structures described. Lots of cutesy California designs. Great photos of construction techniques, some of which could be challenged.

I decided to edit my review after completing several project. While at first I was quite frustrated because this book wasn't what I expecting. These projects are all soft bodied - only the head, hands and feet are polymer clay. This wasn't made clear in the description of the book.However after making a troll and a witch - both modified, I really how much fun it can be to put your time into making those tricky parts and using a soft, poseable body which can stand on its own. I also have a tricky time with that. I picked up some great tips for costumes, hair, and armatures that I know I can use in other projects.Her directions are clear, though at times you'll be told to do this like in this project... but at least she gives page numbers. Honestly though if she repeated the steps each project the book would be twice as thick. It takes time and practice to master a head and hands and this book really gave me the impetus to work on skills and not worry about sculpting a body.

Easy to follow sculpting instructions but needs a little extra attention and detail when it comes to clothing

The clear directions, supported by color photos make the creating experience fun. The stories the author has given to explain the creations are very imaginative and quite humorous!!My work with polymer clay has been self-taught, and this book did not let me down. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to create something "a little off the beaten path".Some great tips for making your own tools too!I am now looking at the world in a much different light---and smiling more! I will be watching for more books by Dawn Schiller!

I love books that provide you with step by step details to help you create your project. Extremely well written with great pictures so that even a novice can create these fantasy characters. The book shows you what tool is needed for each phase of the character. The skills taught will help you create other figures with ease.

Well explained and illustrated! then you have plenty of room to be creative after you have learn the basics, but it is so much fun that you don"t realize that you are learning! Give yourself some room to experiment and the sprites become your own! In fantasy there is no such thing as a mistake, just happy accidents!

I am a big fan of Dawn and have always wanted to know how she creates her Oddfae. This book tells and shows you step by step how to create some projects. Very concise instructions, photos galore. Once you make one of her projects, you are only limited by your imagination.

I really like all the photos that show concepts. The photos show how to set up the armature and how to form the clay around the armature. A unique concept that I haven't found in other books is how to incorporate cloth with clay. This cloth and clay process is similar to those used in doll making, but these clay figures have an armature which allows the clay figure to remain flexible after the clay has been cured and the cloth and clothing have been added.

I love this book and have enjoyed working with the designs very much. You have to read it thoroughly though in order to follow the directions more easily. It's somewhat confusing in the beginning when you are trying to create the head. She doesn't show adding a wire in the first section, but does in each of the separate designs. Other than that, it's been wonderful!

(2.5 stars) This was a 2-star book for me that I'm giving 3 stars. After all, I've read almost all the previous books in Organ's Penny Green series so I know by now not to expect all that much from them. So why did I read it? (1) It was only 99 cents at the time I ordered it. (2) I was hoping that Scotland Yard detective James Blakely might just possibly be a victim of the Bermondsey Poisoner of the title. That would have made my day.No such luck. James is still alive at the end of this entry in the series and one assumes he'll show up in the next one, if only just to torture me. Then just stop reading them already, you may say. Yeah, I know I should. But one thing this series has going for it is the amount of research the author puts in and the notes at the end. Another thing is that they are edited well. In comparison to many e-books, these have few-to-no punctuation, grammar and spelling errors. And the mysteries themselves are based loosely on real crimes author Emily Organ has come across in her research. And the price is economical, so some bang for your buck.But one thing the books don't have going for them is the characters' lackluster development and their superficial relationships, and the stiff, painful. awkward dialogue. The overall quality of the writing is merely competent.The mystery this time revolves around what seems to be a Black Widow serial poisoner of her husbands. Yes, I did say "husbands" in the plural. All the murders have taken place in Bermondsey over the past eight years or so and all involve the use of arsenic. This most recent murder in 1844 catches Penny's interest and off she goes to investigate. Naturally, James Blakely, Scotland Yard detective, will also be on the case. Naturally Penny's heart will skip a beat every time James shows up. Naturally, they will find their usual fumbling way to a resolution of the mystery.In addition to this mystery, Penny will be facing several issues in her personal life. Francis, her librarian suitor, is off to South America to look for her missing father; her sister is considering divorcing her husband and the father of her children; the editor of the newspaper she works for is replaced by an incompetent nephew of the owner; and James, for whom Penny's heart spends a lot of time skipping, is soon, very soon, to marry. (Why Penny's heart skips so much around James is a puzzle to me. He may be handsome, but he has the personality of a turnip and the sleuthing abilities of Inspector Clouseau.)The murder mystery is somewhat interesting. There are a few red herrings to keep the reader on his/her toes a bit, albeit nothing excessively clever or sophisticated. And the personal side of things continues to annoy me. Penny and James are insipid characters much of the time. I do hope Francis, the librarian, eventually comes back from South America and knocks some sense into P & J.

Love this series set in Victorian times and featuring working class H and h. He is an inspector with Scotland Yard, and she is a newspaper reporter, one of the few females in that profession in these early days of womenâ€™s suffrage and rights. Each book in the series features a complex mystery, usually starting with a murder (or murder spree as in this one). The H and h find themselves working together as their respective jobs put them on the trail of the criminal(s) at large. There is a huge cast of interesting secondary characters that make up the fictional world of the H/h including extended family, work colleagues, etc. The H/h met in Book 1 and have found a growing attraction as the series has advanced. The pair reach a turning point in this book, but there is clearly much more to come. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the series is the authorâ€™s grounding the action in the historical context of the times. The characters reflect the thinking and trends of this exciting era of discovery, new inventions, and seemingly limitless possibilities. The descriptions of locations, work settings, and daily life are incredibly vivid and add such depth and energy to the stories. Always look forward to the next installment!

I pre-ordered this because I was invested in the characters and needed to know what happened next in their lives. There is a good balance between the main storyline of the poisoner, and the love interest. I had to keep reminding myself that this is set in the 19th century since emotions are so stilted and muted. The merry-go-round hunt for the poisoner was quite interesting. Unfortunately I latched on to a question asked in innocence halfway through that pointed to the murderer - that is what happens when you are an avid reader of the genre! The ending is good to keep readers hooked onto the lives of Penny, Francis and James and I will probably buy the next one to see what develops.

Really enjoyed the first books of this series; but then the books began devolving into â€œWill he or wonâ€™t he marry.â€ I wouldâ€™ve hoped the heroine would have become comparably bored with the question, as well ( at least out of self respect). Really no depth to the question or the reasoning. The man has no spine, and the woman sits and waits. Bleh.The entire subplot might make an interesting story if the characters were more fleshed out ( including the fiancÃ©, the families, and societyâ€™s reaction). But that is not the genre this book is written for. The story is to be a thrilling mystery with tones of romance. The romance has taken over and is boring.The mystery portion of the books flows nicely but a bit predictable. Not enough to hold me or lead me to read the next book in the series.

Yay! This story has all of the twists and turns we've come to expect from Penny. I did note that her coworkers seem less sexist and way more sympathetic. I hope they remember their Victorian values in the next book, but it was nice to see them rally together as a team. I wish Mr. Sherman would have opened up a bit more, at least to Penny in private as he's the most mysterious character in the main cast. Hopefully, this means we'll find out what happened at the baths or how he's getting on - does he go back or are there alternatives?This installment did an excellent job of paying off previous setups while leaving enough open loops to make me want more. If you're just now discovering this series, you're in for a great binge.I'm on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happens next!

The evidence is clear that consuming living raw foods is a more powerful way to look and feel younger than a visit to even the most skilled plastic surgeon! Kirk's book is a testament to the power of a raw, vegan diet that won't have you missing chemical-laden packaged and processed foods in the least.Salad dressings made with cashews, a pretender mai tai without an ounce of alcohol, soups created with broccoli and butternut squash and stews chock full of portobello mushrooms are presented in easy to follow recipes. And believe it or not, the 40-something looking Kirk pictured on the cover is actually 70 years young! Her "Live Raw" bible is an amazing compendium of dishes that will translate into eating pleasure and a lifelong of good health!

Just received the book and loving it. The recipes are delicious and easy. The downside about many raw recipes is that they have too many ingredients or are super laborious, but that is not the case with these recipes. After a trip to the market for produce, then ingredients like aminos, tahini, tamari and a few herbs, you're set to make a myriad of raw meals. Mimi also reviews tools essential for a raw kitchen (dehydrator, blender, spiralizer, etc.) so the book is great for people new to the raw path. Highly recommend!

I usually buy books on Kindle, but I wanted a hard copy of this book so I could fully absorb Mimi's philosophy. I actually read the book cover to cover on the beach at Pawley's Island. She's enjoyed a life of great health through her lifestyle, which she describes in detail. While some will say she was just lucky; it may not have been due to her lifestyle, I don't believe that. I do believe all the components of her personal healthy living plan enabled her to have a life of great health. Although it is mostly a cookbook, she does share her many tips for "feeling good." I found most of the recipes enticing and unique. I have tried 2 of them already, liking both well. Yes, they do require a whole new way of cooking and thinking, new ingredients and tools to buy, new cooking techniques to learn; however, that's the point! Over the last 2 years I have been transitioning from the SAD to a healthy Vegan lifestyle for both health and anti-aging benefits. This book has taken me to the next level. If you are unsure about going Vegan, this book might not be "easy" enough for you. Or maybe it will be, skipping all the BS and teaching you how to dive in. I found the book to be very useful and recommend it. Mimi's experience is pretty awesome and I am glad she's sharing it!

I just love this book. It is cheaper as chalk full of healthy recipes. I would call it health benefits if I could. I would give it 4 1/2 stars if I could because I have high allergies to omega 3s, (flax, chia, and hemp), I also have allergies to caffeine but can have low amounts in chocolate and I'm allergic to soy but can have soy sauce. Realizing my allergies are rare, I am not judging the author on not giving alternatives but I just wish she had so that's why I gave her a 4 1/2 stars to give her a heads up for her next edition. She is such an excellent and thorough author that I am positive she would want to cover her basis for those who follow her but have drawbacks due to allergies!

Even though I never made the transition to eating all raw, the food prep techniques are so original and helpful for anyone to learn. I tried the dehydrator breads and the nut cheeses. Both were delicious and eaten right away. I hope Mimi comes out with another book that better shows how a busy person can schedule the food prep so they can make the transition to 100% raw without eating salad all the time. I still end up eating my nuts not soaked, even though I know it's bad for you because I don't want to wait. I think people could really use some helpful homemaker techniques to make living raw easier.

I truly LOVE this book! I love the quality of the paper, the gorgeous photos, the level of detail - I never knew some herbs should be stored like flowers in the refrigerator. There is so much more that Mimi shares in this book that I just wish I had time every day to sit and leisurely read through it. I consider this book very valuable in helping one transition into a healthier way of living because it covers every aspect of a healthy lifestyle. The only negative is the complexity of Mimi's recipes. I am afraid this might frighten a beginner off.I bought one copy for myself and one for my daughter, who is vegan like me and also loves to eat raw best. She is very stressed out with a new job right now, however, and so very busy. So, I actually withheld it as a gift this Xmas to wait for a time when she is less likely to be overwhelmed. I put colorful tabs on the various chapters and left it out for her to look over before Xmas to get her reaction to it. She picked it up, carefully leafed through, and then said nothing about wanting a copy. She needs REAL simple now, I think, and this book is wonderfully NOT! :)Mimi is a perfectionist. (Takes one to know one.) I really appreciate this, and I am sure her recipes have so many ingredients because they all add up to something truly extraordinary. I really look forward to when I have enough time to try them as written. Still, I like simple best and will use her recipes more like a blueprint to create something of my own with much less fuss - unless I am planning a special dinner party. Unfortunately, my 20-something daughter does not yet have enough experience in the kitchen to do this! Overall, though, I will highly recommend this book to friends.

I bought Live Raw and Raw-Vitalize, also by Mimi Kirk. Live Raw has recipes that are a bit more time consuming with more ingredients. The recipes look good, but I haven't made any. They look like a lot of work. Mimi's other book, Raw-Vitalize is now my go-to raw recipe book. The recipes are easy to make, not super time consuming or needing lot's of ingredients. I would not buy Live Raw again, but highly recommend Raw-Vitalize. Raw-Vitalize is a must have for raw foodists.
