These are perfect for practicing kana and kanji. Flexible but not totally floppy, 8.5x11x0.25. Covers are thick enough to be useful without being too stiff to interfere with writing and both covers have a space for writing your name, course, work title, etc so you can use the book right to left or left to right, your choice. The spine is square/flat and allows the pages to be opened fully and has a small block for writing a name or number.The book has 112 pages total. Opening left to right (western style), the first page is ruled paper and headlined 'Table of Contents' so you can use it as that or just scratch. The last 2 pages are blank and can be used for whatever. The next to the last page has nice big hiragana and katakana tables with stroke order and romaji reading. 4th and 5th pages from the back are ruled and can be used for whatever. Pages 2-107 representing 53 facing pairs of ruled on the left, and columned boxes on the right. The columned pages have channels between the columns that you could write in the kana (furigana) if you were writing kanji in the column boxes.Overall this is a great notebook for writing kana/kanji on the right hand page and translations, romaji, notes, etc on the left ruled page which is how I am using it. So I write in the right hand column boxes Japanese style (top to bottom, right to left) then write the romaji, translation and notes on the ruled left page. There are 9 columns by 20 boxes on the right hand pages and 27 ruled lines on the left hand ruled pages. This gives you 3 lines of ruled per column if you want to translate, add notes, etc relative to the facing column page. The boxes in the columns are half inch by half inch and the channels between the columns are quarter inch. There is a half inch margin at the bottom of the columned pages so if you have to go over by one character you can. The ruled pages are 3/8th ruled. The pages are white and erase well if using quality pencils and erasers. Paper thickness is adequate and you only get faint impressions through to the next page if at all.Overall, nothing too cramped, nothing too big, exactly what you want. Very well thought out.Do yourself a huge favor and get some quality pencils, erasers, and a sharpener. It makes everything way more enjoyable. Nice genkoyoshi notebook. However, it is quite a bit larger than normal notebooks and the cover is not thick- it's just paper with wax covering. This makes the notebook very susceptible to bending and warping.

It has a lot of intersting features like numbered pages, a table of contents, and several places to include name/subject/volume number, etc. The text boxes with instruction on how to use these features is a bit superfluous. I only wish the cover was hard like a regular composition book. Otherwise, this is a really cool notebook.
It is an excellent notebook, it came whit Genkouyoushi and also whit regular "occidental" lines, so you can practice kana and also write the meaning of the words or kanji. The paper is resistent enough and the cover is durable (waxed).It is a little longer than letter paper.

I love this notebook for practicing kanji. It's not archival quality, nor high end, but perfect beginner's practice notebook. The matte cover really makes it feel nicer than it really is. Will definitely buy another as my practice matures.
Not only does this Notebook have the needed spaces for practicing Kanji and Hiragana/Katakana, but there's also lined pages and all the pages are numbered, which means that you can make your own Table of Contents and organize you're entire notebook! Such a great tool for learning Japanese!
