From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1—In this follow-up to the wildly popular Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site, the trucks are back, working together to get the job done. This task is a bit too big for the old crew, though, and some new friends make an appearance, including a skid steer loader, a backhoe, a flatbed, a pumper truck, and a front-end loader. Fans of the first title, and vehicle lovers in general, will adore this story that's perfect for reading anytime of day. Filled with vibrant illustrations and rich vocabulary, this rhyming tale is sure to make readers grin as brightly as the smiling vehicles in the book! VERDICT A solid addition for storytimes and one-on-one sharing. Expect high circulation.—Emily E. Lazio, The New York Public Library

SO GOOD. My only complaint about the first was that it didn't include any lady trucks. (Yes, this is a big deal for me!) Though this one doesn't even out the ratio, it does include two trucks positively identified as girls, including Skidsteer, which is my favorite truck (look, when you have a two-year-old who is obsessed with anything that has wheels, you develop favorite trucks!). I'm thrilled with the message that sometimes you need help to complete a big task, and that getting help can be fun -- an important lesson that I myself had trouble with as a kid. Very happy with this sequel!

As far as follow-ups to a masterpiece go, this one is better than most. (Think: the dreadful sequel to Little Blue Truck when it goes to the city--suddenly there are humans involved and the rhymes aren't as good). Here the same world is pretty much intact and the rhyme and meter only falter once. It's not as wonderful as Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site but it's very good and your preschooler will love it. One very positive difference (if obvious--but only because it's odd enough to stand out) is that in this sequel some of the trucks are gendered female. I appreciate that not only because little girls might want to read a truck book, but even more so for my son. We can raise strong girls but if we don't ALSO raise boys not to run away from anything that gets gendered female, then we're only being halfway successful. Thank you to whoever made sure that some of the trucks are "she"!

We finally received the book this evening and we have already read it 4 times before bed. Since I've read Goodnight, Goodnight Construction site over 100+ times already, I feel the flow of this book is similar. The rhymes were great, the illustrations were great, and best of all, my 3 year old LOVES this book. What a great addition to our book collection.

My son's favorite book starting at 18 months was Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site. When we got Steam Train, Dream Train, he loved that just as much, if not (at least at times) more. So I was absolutely thrilled to see this book release! My son, now 5, always wants to read it, and so does his little sister! I think it's so fun to have "girl trucks" as part of the team, and I see it already inspiring imaginative play with the two of them, even though my daughter isn't quite two yet. I also love that it takes the team through the whole day, and successful at the end, they can all go to sleep feeling content with their day's hard work. Another winner for sure!

This is a fantastic book. I'll explain below, but if you have a toddler who is even slightly interested in trucks, he or she will love this book. This review's broken into three parts: the artwork, the story, and the effect on my son.First, the artwork is beautiful. It is realistic while still being playful. This isn't abstract art, but an honest-to-goodness return to childlike renderings of gigantic construction equipment having fun while getting work done. It looks like the artists used colored pencils (lots of blue and orange) on rough white and black paper. This softens the massive iron characters while keeping the images clean. The pictures are a delight to look at, and fascinate the boy too. It is a welcome relief from all the computer generated art that has invaded much of childrens' media lately. I wouldn't say the pictures should be framed and put up on a wall, but, well, yeah, they probably should. I'd put a few up if it wouldn't mean cutting up the book - a few are pretty majestic.Second, the story is clear, simple, and perfect. Some jobs are too much to do on your own, and it's OK to ask for help. The 5 trucks from the original "Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site" wake up in the morning, and have to build a huge building. They know they can't do it alone, so they call 5 new trucks to help out. Each truck pairs up with a new one to do things they couldn't do alone. For example, Cement Mixer needs to pour cement on an upper floor of the building, which he can't reach. So, he gets help from Pumper Truck to get it up there. It's a task neither could complete on their own. What a wonderful way to present teamwork and friendship! In the end, all the trucks snuggle up and go to sleep, too, so it's a perfect segue to bedtime. One small critique I'd make is that sometimes the rhymes are a little clunky. But, that is easy to forgive for such a beautiful story. Also, they make sure to use important words ("cooperation", "teamwork") on the stresses, just so they're emphasized for little readers.Third, my son has demanded this book be read at least three times every day since he got it. He even demands it be read just before nap time, which he's never done with any other book. Usually, as soon as I read the last word in the book, he immediately tells me to read it again. During the read, he's pretty much spellbound. A few of the pages are cliffhangers, and my son enjoys calling out which new truck is coming down the road. By the end of the book, he always likes to go through and describe which truck does which work. Since he pays such close attention during the read, it tends to slow him down and prepare him to go to sleep. During the day, I hear him mumbling out lines he heard from the book while playing with his trucks. We got the original "Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site" last winter, and it has been a nightly read since then. Now, he loves reading both of these books together, since they are kind of like Part 1 and Part 2 of the same story. As a few of the other reviewers mentioned, the new crew of trucks includes a few girls. I thought this wouldn't be such a big deal for my boy, but I was wrong. Before turning the page to the next pair of trucks, my son always makes me identify which one is the girl and which the boy. Sometimes I get it wrong, and he says "Noooo! THAT's the girl, THAT's the boy!" Just to make sure they're always equal, he even decided Dump Truck (a boy) was a girl, since his partner Front-end Loader is a boy. This book is great. For parents: If you don't have it, get it. Your kid will love it.For the authors: *PLEASE* write more books! I'll get every one!!

We have the first book of this series: Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site, and Steam Train Dream Train also by the author. These are my son's favorite go to books at bedtime. If you have a child that likes one of the three, they will like the other two. The feature the same rhyme scheme, and focus on the parts of the machines, so kids who are into the technical aspects will get a kick out of that. But each book is cute enough and has enough going on visually in the pictures that children will also appreciate it visually if they are not into the machines themselves. My son always points out all the other things going on in the picture, and likes to fill in the sounds for the trucks and diggers and such.My son is such a big fan that I will probably be buying any book that Rinker comes out with.

We were so excited when this book came out. Excellent story with adorable, vibrant pictures. My two year old is obsessed with trucks and we read this book (& goodnight goodnight Construction site) every day. I only gave four stars because the binding has completely fallen apart a year later. Pages literally just fall out while I turn them. We do read this book everyday, but I try to be careful & we’ve had other books just as long without an issue.
