This was a great read! First of all, the historical fiction aspect - This one is very well researched. 1888 comes alive! There's a bit of sci-fi because there is also the time-traveling aspect of it. The nuts and bolts of the actual time travel, however, are not the main part of the story, so there isn't tons of time spent on it. Just enough to where you don't feel like it was too glossed over. Then there is the paranormal aspect, which again is pretty well done (except I wondered how the ghost of someone from the future ends up in the past when they haven't been born yet, but I just chalked it up to the spirit following the person, not the time period.) The love story is the best part though and the characters are completely fleshed out! The dialogue, however, was my favoriteI So well done between the modern slang and Victorian England. As someone who loves the intrigue of the Jack the Ripper mystery, that part is also well done. Seriously, I laughed and I cried while reading this. I'd like to also thank the author for not throwing in a simple pat ending, but for really thinking about it. Time-traveler endings can go so many different ways and so many people do them just plain wrong. My only complaint about the storyline is that the erotic scenes were very vague. So vague sometimes that you couldn't actually be sure they had sex or not, or what type of sex. There aren't tons of these scenes anyway (just enough to move along the story) so a little more detail on those would have been worth it to show just how close the main characters had become. I still give it 5 stars though because my little complaint isn't enough to not love it!I bought the Kindle version of this book but I like it enough to put it on my re-reading list so I'll probably buy the paperback edition! It will be on my go-to list to re-read when I can't find another good one to read! If you love a good time-traveling, Victoria, historical fiction gay novel (or any combination thereof) this should be at the top of your list!

All I can say is READ THIS BOOK - it's one of the best in the genre. I admit I wasn't taken with the seemingly swift, breezy writing style and wondered how much depth and complexity the author might achieve with it. I'm more than pleased to say that this is a thoroughly conceived, historically detailed, and intricately dramatized story so well paced I didn't want to put it down. The main characters, FBI agent Morgan Nash, who mysteriously finds himself transported through time to 1888 where he falls for museum scholar Ezra Glacenbie, are the kind of guys whose love will make you feel good about yourself, but the secondary characters are almost equally endearing. You'll likely find yourself thinking about the all of them as you go about your day. Author Tamara Allen somehow weaves together the tropes of Victorian romance and hard-edged cop dramas into something fresh and (the only word that will do) wonderful.Morgan and Ezra can take their places alongside Crane and Day (KJ Charles), Balfour and Lauriston (Joanna Chambers) and a handful of other male couples that represent the best of the genre. Thank you for the gift of this novel, Ms. Allen!

Morgan Nash is a 21st century FBI agent. He is somehow accidentally 'summoned' back to the 19th century by some scholars who were testing their Latin. The book with the spell in it is stolen and as they hunt for the means to send Morgan back to his own time, he becomes embroiled in the legendary Jack the Ripper case (irresistible to an FBI agent!) and starts falling for Ezra, his housemate.Sometimes when writing time travel novels, authors go to the ridiculous (or tedious) trying to convince us that they are familiar with the time period and to help us 'see it'. In this case, the author focuses on the characters and the plot, and the time periods are secondary, to the point where they feel natural rather than forced. It's well done.I actually ended up researching 'Prince Eddy' online to find out more about the real man and what happened to it. It's always great when an historical story prompts you to do real research.

DOWNTIME is a totally engaging Victorian period piece M4M romance mixing time travel, the occult and a sweet "gay" male romance, flavored with great friendships as well as late 19th century London serial killings and their resultant rather primitive police procedures. Too, because we're occasionally - and carefully - taken back and forth between the late 19th century and the early 21st century, there is a soupçon of double-agent spy thriller content that could have been taken from current headlines.I loved it - even though there might have been a bit too much time devoted to the legendary "Jack the Ripper" case - the telling of which did leave some unanswered questions.FBI agent Morgan gets knocked unconscious while doing a modern-day stakeout trying to catch a spy. Because of a supernatural spell "gone bad" {actually it may not have "gone bad" at all ;-} he wakes up in 1880s London surrounded by awe-struck British Museum employees - including Ezra, with whom Morgan is destined to fall in love. The two main characters (Morgan and Ezra) find their way to each other's hearts though there are lots of rocky paths along the way - including 1888's infamously cruel "Jack the Ripper."They are helped in so many ways by their wonderful friends (and, ultimately, "adopted family" of choice): Hannah, Derry and Derry's sister Kathleen, proprietress of a delightfully comfortable boarding house in which almost all of the main characters live.Although the book calls for a super-sized portion of "suspension of disbelief," it really is well written, romantic and quite appealing. I enjoyed it a lot. Tamara Allen does a beautiful job on period gay romances - see especially her 5 star book, WHISTLING IN THE DARK, an M4M romance set during radio broadcasting's earliest, pre-license era.Brava!
