Easy read, accurate understanding of the alcoholic/addict
This book will cause you to rethink the whole idea of addiction and the many misapplied or inappropriate approaches to such a terrible affliction. Rather short and easy to read, the book wears its experienced, insightful authority easily and unpretentiously. It's the kind of book you'd want legislators and public officials to read and take to heart. But, as that is not likely, given the politics about the subject, let's hope the general public discovers it. Full disclosure: I know the author.
The best book I've read concerning the matter of Alcoholism. Allowed me to understand the subject in a new light. I really appreciate the writers ability to convey the idea that there are several influences that cause addiction. He doesn't rely on one golden rule and yet he is able to break down the problem in the most simplest terms. Not alot of words but great ideas that are easy to understand. It has been incorperated into my thinking ever since I finished it and it has helped me cope with my own addiction.
One of the best books ever written about addiction. I have been working in this field for 40yrs. I found his description of why abstinence is crucial, so helpful. Patients that I have referred to this comment that they never understood their struggle as clearly as they have since reading this book.
Dr Richard Sandor has a long history working in addiction medicine and it shows in his writing. His take on things is unique among medical doctors, especially fellow psychiatrists. He does not believe there is a scientific answer to "curing" addiction. Instead he carefully and convincingly explains his observations over years of working with addicts and alcoholics. You have to read it for yourself to understand the depth of his convictions.I recommend this book to anyone interested in relieving the pain of addiction, either for themselves or loved ones.
Perfect book......and written so you can understand addiction.
This is such a personal and well-written book. Anyone could relate to it. It's especially helpful for those in the addiction spiral. It makes sense, and I don't have to misunderstand the dynamics of those caught up in that spiral.
As a father of a recovering alcoholic, I found this book to be very helpful. In particular it gave me insight into the spirituality side of AA. How all inclusive it is as well as how necessary it is for a person to be able to stay sober and live a full life. The emphasis is on there being something bigger than you that a person is staying sober for. There is also something bigger than you that is helping you to stay sober.
