I'm going to side with other reviews, in that this book is "good, but could be better". First off, it's outdated. There's a few major evolutions since this book was published, so I can hope that the author has already submitted a revised edition to the publisher. Secondly, it's VERY basic. In other words, you won't get Puppet running effectively and flawlessly unless you stick to only the very basics detailed here.Puppet has many issues, and although it's a well-though-out program and solution, it suffers from poor examples and bad documentation on their website. So, as one Linux expert told me, "Puppet is hard." I struggled for some time just getting it to run at all. This book does very little to aid you in just getting Puppet running, although it spends quite some text to tell you how to install it.Recommend: Use an older version of Linux, such as Ubuntu 8.0.4, and you may have better luck.Puppet looks incredibly easy to understand and deploy. Unfortunately, the writers of documentation or books stop short of what I deem "real" help. After reading this book, the one thing I'm left with is a feeling of understanding, but the nearly complete inability to expand beyond basic examples. I'm confident I could deploy a Puppet solution, but unfortunately, just as the book refers to reductivelabs.com wiki pages for references and more information, Reductive Labs does very little to take it from there. No real effort is given from either party to connect the dots and make this easy.I recommend this book to introduce you to Puppet. I had to read it three times to really "get it", but I'm still stuck with lacking examples of syntax in many, many cases.

If you are completely new to Puppet, you should definitely buy this book. It does a good job of walking through the basics of automating your data center. I would have liked to see some more in-depth examples, but the topics covered were fleshed out enough that I could figure it out on my own.I have a major complaint about this edition, however: when it comes to technical books, published code should ALWAYS be tested. It should be taken as absolute fact that the code published in a reference manual will function correctly and do what the author claims it will do. That's not the case here. For example:On pg. 116, the author creates a resource of type "apache::apache_files"But in the definition for "apache:apache_files" ON THE VERY NEXT PAGE it reads: define appache::apache_files ...with two 'p's. It's clear that this code could never have been tested, because it wouldn't work!But the author does demonstrate a thorough understanding of the subject matter, and I will probably buy "Pro Puppet" when it is released. But I sincerely hope the code is tested (or the editing is improved).

This feels like a decent e-book that Apress rushed to market too early. It's not only hampered by the lack of an index, but the page formatting in terms of the headers and footers feels like something a high schooler put together in order to pad out the page count. I own one of Mr. Turnbull's other books on linux hardening which I think is excellent, this book falls short of that standard.

Adding puppet to my latest skills list has been like drinking from a firehose. This book, however, has provided some much needed concise information. My only concern is that, with this being a product still very much in development, that this book in printed form may almost be out of date by the time of printing. I've found that the company's web site and google groups has been a supplement.

Hi,I started using puppet about 2 months ago and had spent quit some time googling around. It worked, but I had many questions where I could not find a clear answer.By just reading this book, I got all my answers and now I understand much better on how to implement puppet in a clean and manageable way. I writes about all aspects of puppet without covering them all in depth (I like this). It enabled me to search more efficient on the web, if I'm looking for some aspect in depth.I would recommend it to everyone who is rather new to puppet and who does not understand fully it's potential.Best RegardsAlex

Very dated - but was a great intro at the time.Grab Puppet 3 Beginner's Guide to get started now. Get a VM on DigitalOcean or the like and give yourself a great weekend project.

I read 2/3rds of this book and gave up. It is poorly edited, contains too many mistakes/inconsistencies and reads like a first draft. It is also too old to be relevant for the current releases of Puppet. It is my own fault for buying such an old book before checking out the website (I was just hoping for a kindle read on the daily commute to get a head start). A better place to start is the tutorial on their website which is of a higher quality and easier to follow.

For any sysadmin that needs an introduction to Puppet this is a good book to start with, gives you a basic understanding of puppet and how it works, I recommend it.

This textbook has mistakes. In a computer system, one mistake can bring down the whole system and you'd think this textbook, of all textbooks, would have been graced by more tenacious editing... The mistakes I found are incorrect captions corresponding to complicated diagrams which then become impossible to follow. They may be TALKING about memory range FFED0000-FFFF0000 but what they REALLY meant was FFE80000-FFFD0000 .......There is nothing worse than spending an hour beating your head against the table, only to realize the textbook was actually wrong. This happens throughout the book, usually when memory or I/O addresses are involved.Most of my class hated this book and could not bring themselves to sit down and read it. When I found these mistakes (at least 5 mistakes come to mind) my teacher recognized them and said, yeah but this is the best book on the market for .386 programming, so what can you do?

Nice Quality, quick delivery

Multiple typos, multiple errors in circuit schematics, and bad explanations.

The book was required for my microsystems class. It's not an awful book, but it's not really a book meant for light reading. However, that said, the book is much more understandable than many other technical books that I have read. It involves a lot of assembly language definitions and applications. Every time I had to search for the syntax or details about a command, I could always easily find it, and usually understand the involved registers and required arguments. Overall not a bad book.

Some of the chapters aren't written very clearly and it can get a little bit confusing.

First, to actually say something about this book, it's a solid and comprehensive look at a burgeoning field. The use of radiogenic isotopes as geochemical tracers and for age determinations of various sorts is now a crucial component of studies of all parts of the Earth system. Inevitably, a single text that tries to cover such a diverse suite of rapidly developing subdisciplines will run into some glitches and not be completely current, but Dickin has provided a very good starting point for an advanced undergraduate or graduate course in isotope geochemistry and/or geochronology. This book is just about the only survey text available, and fortunately, it's good.A second point: the "review" posted by the 'reader from Washington State' is a dogmatic creationist screed that doesn't address the content of the book and gets the story of the Jack Hills zircons wrong. The comments by this person could be taken as the type example of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing. For those that are really interested, I suggest that they look at the original papers involved in the controversy. For those that are just skimming this site, let me point out that the "rock unit" that was dated at Jack Hills is a sandstone, so of course the zircons showed a "confusion of information" because they were derived from all manner of different parent rocks by erosion! If you want to understand the complexities and nuances of geochronology, and learn how these very different techniques are used for purposes like characterizing geochemical reservoirs, determining the temperature history of rocks, and --yes-- determining the absolute age of rock units, read Dickin's book, and only then visit the creation science sites for a hoot.

The content was there but the form for the saturating exponential had an incorrect sign. That just really bugged me as it was repeated in many places in the book.

This is the second and last "dummies" book that I have purchased. In both instances it was for software that I use in my job. So far anytime I got stuck or had a problem and tried to use these books as resources I cannot find any answers. In fact this actually added to my confusion!! They may work for some people but I have to give the book(s) an "F".

I'm very new to PL/SQL. My experience so far has been with MySQL. This book has a lot of great info and it's for beginners as well as people that know some basics. I'm working on a certification for Oracle (programming with PL/SQL) and decided to start with this book before moving onto the more advanced stuff. I recommend it!

I felt like I received a good introduction to the basics of PL/SQL from this book. However, I purchased the Kindle version (for iPad) and the formatting needs to be corrected. The code examples in the book were very difficult to read and follow because of the formatting. Once I replicated the examples on my computer, they were much easier to read.

I am very pleased w/ the purchase of the book. If your goal is to learn PL/SQL quickly and comprehensively, this is the book to buy. It covers all the fundamentals you need to know about PL/SQL and it is excellently written. I have been a developer for 20 years in many languages. Learning new languages from overly technical books and writters, I find, often times make your learning process slow and ineffective. I took this class at Oracle, but there were topics that the training manual and the instructor did not do a good job presenting. This book clarified many of the topics I that were presented in class in a simpler, clearer, and more effective manner. I highly recommend it.

This is a great book for beginners. I give it only 4 stars because it does not have examples to practice.In my opinion you definitely have to know SQL better prior to using this book. For hard-heads like me :) it was helpful to understand the concepts and the programming Syntax in a easier way without losing in several lines of text.However I used this book along with the free online material and had practicing on Oracle installed in my PC and trying out the examples/scenarios that I created myself.I am glad I used this book and would recommend any one to start with this for beginners and move on to books with more advanced concepts.

Obviously a bit dated, but that is clearly noted. I found the book helped me in my PL/SQL class. That's what I wanted, that's what I got.

I haven't had to use pl/sql for about 10 years. I wanted a book to help me through relearning PL/sql. This wasn't it.

I just finished book 5 (Arch Enemy) in this series and reviewed it, and realized I needed to jump in a time machine and come back to review book one as my note to readers interested in picking up the first volume.Yes, this book (and the series it spawns) is similar to the Mitch/Digger/Scot/Jericho/Pike books out there in that it features over-the-top good guys running around beating up on over-the-top bad guys in exciting, page-turning ways. What is different in this series is that Maloney forgoes the "tortured soul" single-person bad-azz shooter in favor of some very interesting, multi-player character development.His larger plot arcs are fun, interesting, and genre-appropriate. The plot points and devices used to move along those arcs, however, are at the very top of disbelief. Maloney frequently employs deus ex machina and extremely improbable plotting to move the characters from point "A" to point "B." These insane events happen so often that I almost wonder if they aren't used as an inside joke to fans. Something along the lines of "Bad guy have a gun to your head? Already pulled the trigger? Don't worry! Call 1-800-Plot-Fix NOW and we'll send you a sniper's bullet to knock the barrel away before the bullet can exit the barrel! Operators are standing by!" Of course, the narrow escape happens in all books of this genre, but Maloney tends to have a knack for taking it to the extreme. Like I said, I wonder if he does it as an aside to his fans.That said, the reader can afford to have some fun rolling their eyes at the various last-second contrivances used to advance the plot, because Maloney is so damned good at character development and interaction. It's not just the main protagonist we get to know in this book/series, but his partner, his daughter, his boss, and many others. Whatever Maloney lacks in the art of semi-realistic last-minute escapes, he more than makes up for in developing his characters and allowing them to interact. He is exceptional at switching first-person perspectives from character to character, and you, the reader, are treated to experiencing many personalities as they view the same plot arc from different and very realistic perspectives.This is Maloney's strong suit - what sets him apart and what sets this series apart. His characters are so strong that I am more than able to overlook the plot devices - even consider them part of the "fun" of the read - because I am paid in very good, very strong introspection and interaction. The characters "do" some really silly things, but they act, think, feel, and interact in very real, very well-considered ways.Why five stars if I complain about the plot contrivances? Because I'm not complaining about them - merely pointing them out. Maloney is good enough with the arc and good enough with the characters that I can roll my eyes all I want and still feel like I got a highly enjoyable read. You WILL roll your eyes, but if you will also wipe them a few times. That's why I keep wondering if it's intentional - if Maloney is intentionally going over-the-top to get your guard down so the serious, real parts hit you harder.Within the limits of the genre (this is light reading, after all), Maloney is highly adept at putting you in the brain-space of different people. For me, that was enough to keep a 5-star rating despite some pretty intense eye-rolling deus ex machina moments. I poke my fun because readers of reviews should know and understand what they're getting, but I remain an avid fan of Maloney and this series, have gladly purchased all five books thus far, and will be near first in line for the sixth pre-order.

I suppose if you want to read about a hero with major flaws this could be for you. Morgan runs blindly into situations without a thought in his head. He was supposed to be an accomplished assassin but apparently Maloney doesn't know what that means or Morgan was a real has been and forgot everything he knew that made him useful to the CIA when he was younger.The character development is terribly weak. Morgan's grown daughter wants a better relationship with her Dad so Morgan promises to take her to a sports event in a day or so. He than runs of to Afghanistan for a few days and than returns to the US to run around the country for a few more days and never is the missed sports event mentioned until weeks later. Probably a nice development to flesh out the characters but it than lies ignored for chapters and chapters.I suppose it beats doing taxes or reading the paper, but only just a little bit better.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through this book and honestly, it's really dragging. I used to read to get to sleep. Then I discovered authors like Mark Dawson and series like the Grey Man books. Suddenly I found myself unable to go to sleep, I'd literally read all night. Leo J Maloney has brought me back to the point where I struggle to end a chapter before nodding off.I guess my question is, does this series get any better after this, clearly, difficult first book? If they all follow the same pace with the same bungling and inept protagonist, I just don't think it's worth wasting any more cash on. Oh, yeah, for the record, I agree with every reviewer who says that Maloney's bio is BS. I personally know of a former telephone sales guy who created a far more convincing covert operative character in his very first self-published novel.

The novel is fast paced with plenty of action. Power players in Washington calling the plays with black operating players on both sides of the action. Dan Morgan rises to the occasion with his partner, Cougar. A few rough edges with the chapters providing retroactive context. All in all, a story that will make readers to seek more of Cougar.Bjgraney@charter.net

Took a moment to get into this one, but it was well worth the time it took to get through the details necessary to build a good series. I'm looking forward to reading book two. Maloney writes a fast-paced story with a great plot line, and he brought his story to a satisfactory close, no loose ends.

Termination Orders was a terrific thriller! I really enjoyed the way the writer interspersed the present with flashbacks designed to give the characters depth and backstory.Good plot, lots of action, plenty of plot twists and surprises I would definitely recommend this book. Add to all of that the fact that you don't find out who the actual bad guy is until near the end of the book and you have a recipe for a very good way to spend a weekend!

Waste of my time reading this pulp. The chapter on Morgan's basic military training, recruitment and year on "The Farm" was laughable it was so full of errors and holes. The story went downhill from there. I would hazard a guess and say the author is a phony - he couldn't have actually had any real experience as an operative and write such crap. I won't read any more of his drivel.

I found this book via Bookhub and got it on kindle. I could not stop reading. Very good story of a man retired from black ops with a wife and daughter. He gets pulled out of retirement to assist his old boss at CIA. One thing leads to another and... I won't spoil it for you.If you like Brad Thor, Tom Clancy, Mich Rapp, you will enjoy this. I can't wait to read the second book in this series.My new favorite author!

Kindle version: images are too small.This is particularly bad for special chars and formulas which are rendered as images as they appear about as large as the punctuation.Normal diagrams are also small and must be viewed with the zoom function.Apologies for rating the book based on formatting, but there's no other apparent way to contact the publisher.Once the issues are resolved I will fix the rating to fix the "outlier" it has created.

Supervised machine learning only. Basically a bunch of applications for an undergrad CS class. Light on theory. Very well structured though and excellent if you want to see some applications of machine learning in action. For deeper treatment see coursera courses by Geoff Hinton of Toronto and the Stanford ML class.

I have already used machine algorithms in production with Spark and Python, but I wanted to have a better understanding of how the algorithms work and more importantly what the variations, strengths/weaknesses, and trade-offs are for each algorithm. This book was exactly what I've been looking for.The authors explain the algorithms fluidly without any reference to specific programming libraries or languages. They introduce the concepts very well before moving into the specifics of the logic and math behind the algorithms. Following a thorough explanation of how the algorithm works, the authors then describe variants and pitfalls based on their prior foundation.So, if you aren't a math major but would like to understand the concepts and details of how ML works along with practical knowledge of variants, parameter tuning, and trade-offs, then this book should be exactly what you need.Finally, the algorithms covered are the most commonly used in ML. AI isn't covered. Look at the Table of Contents to see which algorithms are explained.

Machine Learning is brilliantly explained in this outstanding book. You will learn the subject a lot better than in many other books in the market. The only downside of this book is the lack of examples with programming code, especially in Python. I strongly urge the authors to do so in a next edition. A lot in the area is learned by doing, by using good software development practices.

Great introductory book to this field. I would highly recommend this for computer scientists or other engineers looking to get an understanding of this field. I have read a number of books that are too heavy with theory and some that are a bit on the skimpy side and leave out details that are important for a true practical implementation. This has just the right mix.

That cover various aspects of the field.Some books are base on theoretic side: Learning from the Data.Some books provide a gentle way for programming for Machine Learning in different languagesSome books combine theory and programmingThis book "Fundamentals of Machine Learning" a good written book for practitioner in machine learning. For people that want to know how machine learning experts work. That processes they use, and how them organize there work.In additional basic properties and ideas of general algorithms discussed.This book uses excellent plant English, many examples and real casesBut if you need mathematical background or programming background I think you need use another book.

Overall, the book is well written - plenty of examples and good approaches towards data preparation, analysis, and applied ML.

I wish I returned it. It did not have anything useful.
