I found couple good infomation in this book, which is not cover in other books. It is a good book again!

I picked up this book with the purpose of learning about Symbian development on smart phones and to refresh my C++ grammar. Having heard of other Symbian and Series XX books, I had my doubts regarding the quality of the book's content. As a pleasant surprise, the authors have done a good job in creating a well-structured book that leads a newbie into the world of Series 60 programming.First of all, as the authors state in the preface, prior knowledge of C++ is a prerequisite for getting the most out of this book. On the other hand, because the APIs use a lot of constructs specific to Series 60 development (e.g. how to allocate memory, how to do I/O, string/descriptor classes, etc.), even a beginner like me can quickly build up basic skills with the sole help of this book and some old-fashioned hard work.The book starts out with chapters describing the development environment, including basic how-to's for building Series 60 applications with the command-line tools, Microsoft Visual Studio, Metrowerks CodeWarrior, and Borland C++ Builder. Important stuff that could've warranted more attention -- my first gripes with this book.Next, the authors introduce Symbian/Series 60 specific concepts such as the naming conventions, the new memory allocation scheme and exception handling, descriptors, collection classes, Active Objects (asynchronous services), file I/O, and the client/server architecture that forms the basis for all Symbian applications. I was especially delighted about the clarity of this section although I would've preferred seeing more code snippets.After introducing the different architectures to choose from (control-based, dialog-based, view-switching), the vast majority of the book is dedicated to describing how particular APIs of the Series 60 platform are used for creating UIs, networking, and manipulating multimedia content. Key system APIs for accessing the phonebook, calendar, etc. application engines are also explained although not in too much detail considering how essential these services can be for many potential applications.The last chapter also describes some best practices and tools for quality assurance, which is no doubt a useful addition to a book like this (although more attention could've been given to unit testing, which is only mentioned in passing).I am very satisfied with this book. Even though I would've wanted more sample code and more detail in many parts of the book (the authors refer to sample applications distributed along with the Series 60 SDKs, which was a bit annoying), this book is packed with information and the content is well balanced as a whole. I won't be looking around for another Symbian/Series 60 book now that I've got this one.

I echo the other review of this book. When I saw its title before it was actually published, I ordered it immediately. I am developing leading-edge apps for Series 60 in particular and have found this book to be very useful indeed. I am going to be giving Symbian OS C++ training in Australia and Asia, and I intend to use this book as one of my textbooks to hand out at the courses. The other book I would recommend as a companion is "Symbian OS C++ for Mobile Phones" by Harrison, which is a good book; but focuses more on UIQ than Series 60.

This book is not a "Symbian By Example" book but is a much needed reference for Symbian and specifically Series 60 topics that are hard to find else where such as Direct Screen Access, S60 App Engines eg. Camera API & Photo Album Engine. Such documentation is not a part of any of the other books available or the SDK documentation - so its great that this book provides that information.Other UI topics such as dialogs and menus etc and general discussions of Symbian OS constructs such as descriptors etc are also included, however these topics have been addressed in other Symbian OS books. All in all this is a must have for any one involved with S60 application development.

I am begunning writing our first Symbian OS Software and need a reference book. I choice this book because the SDK do not provide systematic instruction for new programmer.For this book, you can get this.The first two chapter is fundamentals, it provide detail information for build up and usage of tool for developer.The chapter 3 say Symbian OS fundamentals, but i thing this so different to understand for first time developer.I suggest rapidly read this chapter, next read chapter 4 and 5,and come back for read more detail.For this book, we should open the example for fully understand. Because it only said about the main point. This provide the guide for you but if you want more detail should be reference to SDK.At the end,this is a good book for learning series 60,provide useful information for good programming , but can not replace the SDK document.

For developers looking to get a more and deeper information on developing Symbian C++ based games and applications I highly recommend this book. It covers lots of essentials from the Series 60 based architectures, Symbian OS fundamentals and Series 60 specific UI components.I haven't read this book from cover to cover, but I use most of the examples in my work daily and this book is mandatory for every single Symbian C++ developer developing applications to Series 60 device family... for beginners, this book provides easy to start section starting from SDK installation and emulators and for more advanced programmers, this is mandatory reference library which you can use for checking how to use different kind of classes and methods (functions).Great book, afterall :-)

Good study material for new Symbian and Series 60 developers as well as experienced ones. It covers as much as possible in limited 700 pages, from Symbian OS fundamentals, GUI design to more advanced topics, such as ECom, advanced communication technologies. It is kind of nice to provide tips and hints on how to avoid programming mistakes and how to design and develop applications for mobile devices. Last chapter even covers the testing and debugging, which is really useful. It will be better and helpful if example programs can be included in a CD along with the development enviorment.

I came away from my reading of this book with a deeper understanding of the process and time period of repentance --starting at Tisha B'Av and ending at Succot and a sense that my knowledge was shallow. and limited. One of the most profound insights for me is that Yom Kippur is in a sense a rehearsal for our deaths. In the end even our deeds do not count; we are at the mercy of G-d. I would like to incorporate the points Lew made into my personal journey toward repentance and to extend the time period for it according to his instructions. The book spoke to me at a very deep level, and I now start to reread it every year before Tu B'Av.

My daughter, who is an Orthodox Jew, recommended this book to me, after I had an unexpected "religious experience" at a Berkeley JCC Yom Kippur service (I am not Jewish). I laughed and wept my way through this book, which took me to the depths of my soul to find the light in the center of that dark place. I am so grateful to have been introduced to this book and to the deep import of the High Holy Days.

I am a Christian studying the Tanakh in search of a modern scholars thoughts on the High Holy Days. I must admit that the title drew me to the reading of this profound book. It is a wonderful and well explored journey through the soul searching and life enhancing possibilities available to us during the Days of Awe- to take with us into a much better life. So much more than mere information poured out of this book! Insightful and challenging and very wise.

I am reading the book for the second time this year. Rabbi Lew was a spiritual treasure lost at far too young an age. His book is packed with amazingly heartfelt insights. It is all about looking within. He brings together thousands of years of Jewish wisdom with a folksy appreciation for the struggles of living in the modern world. I can't recommend this book enough.

This is a wonderful book, the kind I have been looking for. It is an easy read and yet has a lot of deep concepts that makes one think. This combination is rare. This books takes the reader on journey through the High Holy Days in ways that anyone can relate to and helps the reader get prepared for the Holidays themselves. I have not been able to get through any one chapter in one reading. As I read each section I get lost in contemplation and in thinking about the content. This is a must have for every Jewish library including both the novice and yeshivah educated and all in between.

Fabulous book on the subject of the inner examination of the self that should take place on the HIgh Holy Days. He was a deft, poetic and masterful writer.

This is an inspiring, educational, and comforting book. I will recommend it to everyone I know who is trying to deepen their understanding of spirituality, tradition, Judaism and Jewish history. I will also recommend it to people who are trying to understand forgiveness. The process of reading the book in the last week has been like sitting with a kind teacher and storyteller, and listening to the stories and practices connected to the High Holidays. A deeply enriching experience.

An extraordinarily honest, ope, prayer, a personal journey of spiritual reflection, all within the Jewish unfolding of the High Holidays, but a journey for everyman/women interested in discovering something essential about what it means to say, "I am alive."

Helen Smith, PhD, is a psychologist specializing in forensic issues and men’s issues in Knoxville, Tennessee. I found myself nodding and nodding and nodding again throughout this book.We are in an interesting era of history for male-female relations. Men like myself in our mid-thirties are at a tough crossroads. More than ever, we are unmarried and trying to figure out if we WANT to be. Our fathers predominantly married in their young twenties and are still married. Isn't that what we were supposed to do? Is something wrong with us? The pressure from "societal norms" and from females to get married is extraordinarily intense. We get badgered for "not wanting to grow up" and "not wanting to be responsible", and being suspected of homosexuality.But that really isn't it at all. Having a wife and children sounds like a real joy, with the right woman and right societal structure.But women have changed since our fathers' era. And the laws ("structure") have become screechingly anti-male. We hear non-stop about "the war on women" and "rape culture" and non-equal pay scales and so forth. What did I do wrong? I have never raped anyone and never treated female coworkers poorly. Yet even the women we try to date vehemently believe this claptrap. Why would I want to enter a legally binding arrangement with someone who "loves" me but hates men as a whole?Oh, and that law. Divorce law. It doesn't matter what state you live in this country. Entering a marriage at this point is like playing at any casino: the house wins. As a male you may in the very best case have a home where the woman spends all your money and you are confined to the cellar/attic. You have a greater than 50% chance of being divorced, for "no fault" reason whatsoever, and have over half your assets scarfed away, along with several years of your future earnings for the children/alimony. What kind of thinking man will spin the wheel on those odds? And yet, many of my male friends do continue to get married, but it's a rare day that they do it because they want to; by and large, they get bullied and harassed by their girlfriends and families to do so.It's a sad state of affairs. Men want children, so some roll the dice and a majority get burned for life. It doesn't have to be like this. But despite the author's call to action, it's not going to happen. It's too hard to vocally fight back and get screamed down for being a sexist, women hating, misogynistic, whatever. The alternative? Go on strike. Drop your sword and your shield and just walk off the battlefield. And so, my male generation will either A) get bullied into marriage or B) go on strike and accept a peaceful life of hobbies, beers and stable assets. It's not just the divorced men who are doing this - it's never been married men like me with a great education, great job and a mortgage who don't want to see it all destroyed. There are no shortage of females for us to date in big cities like NYC, Chicago, Washington DC, L.A., etc...in fact, available women have never been more plentiful. But why take a risk????I would've given it 5 stars, but darn it, this should've been a longer book and had more in depth research. It's a narrative that needs to be blared from the mountain tops. I hope to see a sequel to this book.

Have your life's savings, your very net worth, cut in half by the courts - check.Now, after 23 years of marriage, I am once again single, and I have chosen not to drop out of the workforce. I have, however, resolved to never, ever marry again. Put it another way - it's either a lady friend with benefits, or buzz off toots.

Upon receipt and opening the book from Melodie Wholesale (sealed in plastic), at first glance it was found to have corners of pages bent (pages 167, 169,171, 173, 177, 217, 219), as well as hand written notes on page 1 & 217, and a yellow hand written note from a previous owner/user, inserted in page 178. It clearly was not the New book it was advertised to be and for which I had paid $10.00 at a time when most used books were being sold for $ .01 plus the same shipping and handling cost. As I see it, Melodie Wholesale sold their business credability and I won't buy from them nor recommend them to anyone else in the future. However, in giving talks, I will share this experience/example with others, with the hope that they are aware of what some individuals/businesses will do. The content of the book is the only reason for giving it any star rating. The purchase experience is a complete negative, as noted above!

This seems somewhat helpful if one were traveling in Rome or northern Italy. The southern part, where we wish to travel, is totally ignored, with the exception of Sicily.Is this because there are no/few/unusable sites in this area? If so the book should include this information.Also, it appears one needs to speak Italian to visit most of these, which is a helpful rating. There is little information in the book how to proceed if one does not speak Italian.This book is of limited use, and would probably be more helpful to one who already has experience traveling in Italy.

I received the book in a few days and it was signed by the authur. It is a lovely book filled with much needed info. I have stayed at several of the convents that are in the book. The nuns were wonderful and always helpful. This is a book for those travelers who don't need luxury, but want clean basic accommodations. I am using it again to visit other areas in Italy for a 2012 trip. Convents are my 1st choice.

I recently returned from a trip to Italy. I stayed in one of the Rome convents referenced in this book and found the accommodations to be exactly as described in the book. The nuns were gracious and helpful and the room was very plain but clean and comfortable. I highly recommend the book for anyone traveling to Italy on a budget.If you are using public transportation I recommend purchasing a detailed street map of Rome to help pinpoint the location of some of the properties referenced in the book.

It followed that the prices in lire were well out of date and it was easier to obtain information on line. The book is useful for recommendations and descriptions of villages, towns and cities. The short version of my review is that Games of Empire is a great analysis of the material conditions that make up the system that enables us to play video games. The authors' deployment of Hardt and Negri as their cornerstone theorist creates a grand unifying theory of social/technological relationships that surround video games, which is useful to think through. However, if you are already familiar with their work, be prepared for long sections where they quote the basics at you. That isn't a bad thing, mind you, just something that anyone who plans on reading the book should be aware of.That said, if you are interested in Hardt and Negri and the way they can be applied to video games, this is SUPER the book for you.

"Games of Empire" by Nick Dyer-Witheford and Greig de Peuter offers an uniquely incisive analysis of video game industry and culture. Mr. Dyer-Witheford and Mr. de Peuter's fascinating post-Marxist discussion is informed by Antonio Negri and Michael Hardt's influential book Empire, where videogaming is seen both as a paradigmatic expression of the corporate desire to control machines, immaterial labor and subjectivities; and as a possible pathway of resistance and liberation for the multitude.The book is divided into three parts. 'Game Engine: Labor, Capital and Machine' shows how videogaming provides a persuasive training tool that subtly prepares a new generation of laborers for post-industrial production; how some workers at a major video game manufacturer have pushed back against severe exploitation by their corporate bosses; and how game consoles have become sites of contestation over the control of content and game play.The second section, 'Gameplay: Virtual/Actual' deconstructs three massively popular games to explore themes about war, biopower, and neoliberalism. 'Full Spectrum Warrior' presents the banality of the U.S. military's interminable war to secure empire against the threat of theocracy; 'World of Warcraft' highlights struggles between workers in the developed and developing economies over commerce; and 'Grand Theft Auto' cynically renders a world where there are no alternatives to bare-knuckled capitalism.The third section, 'New Game?' demonstrates how the means of production can be coopted by the multitude in acts of defiance, suggesting the possibility of freedom. Mr. Dyer-Witheford and Mr. de Peuter cite spontaneous acts of online protest, tactical games, and self-organized worlds as evidence that gamers are capable of building credible, decentralized social systems.
