About the Author

Leroy Gordon “Gordo” Cooper Jr. (1927–2004) was an aerospace engineer and air force pilot who became one of the seven original astronauts in Project Mercury, the United States’ first manned space program. In 1963 he piloted the final Mercury spaceflight and was the last American to fly an entirely solo orbital mission. Two years later Cooper served as command pilot of Gemini 5 on an eight-day mission alongside astronaut Pete Conrad. In 1970, having flown 222 hours in space, he retired from NASA and the air force at the rank of colonel. After leaving NASA, Cooper served on numerous corporate boards and was a technical consultant in such fields as high-performance boat design, construction, and energy. He also worked for the Walt Disney Company as vice president of research and development for Epcot. His hobbies included deep-sea salvaging and designing aircraft inspired by the UFOs he observed and studied during his career as a pilot and astronaut.   Bruce Henderson is the author of more than twenty nonfiction books, which have been published in a dozen countries. His #1 New YorkTimes bestseller And the Sea Will Tell was made into a television miniseries. Among his other books are Sons and Soldiers: The Unknown Story of the Jews Who Escaped the Nazis and Returned with the U.S. Army to Fight Hitler; Hero Found: The Greatest POW Escape of the Vietnam War; and Trace Evidence: The Hunt for the I-5 Serial Killer. This Book is great. i worked off and on with him in Downey 1n 1966 when I was a technician on the Apollo command module in Downey bldg.290 performing integrated checkout on the bird. he was an interesting fellow and I decided to read book. He was One of the former Mercury Astronaut. the other astronauns had an agreement with a publisher not to discus their space experiences. Cooper was different he did talk about it.There was a newspaper article that Gordon Cooper “had seen a glowing, greenish object ahead of him quickly approaching his capsule” in space. Gordon Cooper the astronaut told me he did saw some object in space and it scared him. The mercury spacecraft could only carried one Astronaut into space and he was alone with that thing. I asked him for how long. He said the object came right next to the mercury spacecraft a few yards away and stayed there for about a day (20 plus hours) then it left quickly. He was sweating when he told me the tale. I asked him if it was saucer shape. He said no but it was a larger than the mercury spacecraft and he said it was bell shaped, more cylinder than bell and it was not greenish glowing, it was metallic. He wouldn’t give me any more details and dropped the subject. Gordon cooper was a back up crew member for Apollo One and 10, and then he left NASA. I guess because he would not keep quiet about the UFO he saw. Cooper spent 222 hours in space on Mercury Freedom 7 and Gemini 6 MissionsI was surprised because this conversation just came out of the blue and it was totally unexpected. I know he slipped and told me this story in confidence. I did not tell anybody about this conversation, because I did not want to discredit myself or this astronaut. This is not a common believable topic. I also thought that I would lose my security clearances if anyone found out. I tried not to remember and or think about it. I had forgotten the name of the Astronaut because I have a hard time remembering people’s name. But I remember and found the newspaper article about the green object seen by the astronaut in the mercury capsule in the internet-it jog my memory. It refers to Gordon Cooper and I am now positive it was Cooper. In Gordon Cooper’s book “Leap of Faith” he denied it happened. I guess somebody got to him or he was pulling my leg. LOLAnyway the book is very interesting with tales he hear about of the v1 and v2 and ufo's. That being said the book really shines with his actual experience with the Mercury program. The book starts there then jumps around a bit. It is easy to read and is a must for somebody interested in the beginning of the space program.

I got this book after watching the reality show inspired by this astronaut and this book is fab-u-lous! Mr. Cooper wrote it in a way that anyone can understand the technical details. It really was a fascinating book and it's really amazing to understand how brave the pioneers of NASA were when they created something out of nothing.

Leap of Faith Gordon Cooper An Astronaut's Journey into the Unknown with Bruce Henderson is a good book with good pictures.Its an easy read. Read it in 2 days. We see Gordon learning to fly his father's plane at a very young age. He had to use blocks to reach the controls. He solos very young and gets his private pilot license no problem. Later in life he give his mom many rides. She would just hop in. Gordo joins the Marines as a rifleman for a short stay,then goes back to school and later gets into the Air Force. He already knows how to fly so its not too hard learning for Gordo to be a US Air Force pilot. He flies many fast jets and becomes a test pilot at Edwards Air Force base.Later Gordo gets confidential orders to report to the new agency NASA. He goes through the selection process and becomes one of the Mercury 7 astronauts. So much training and training.He goes up in the last Mercury flight and does a super job. Later he goes up in a Gemini spacecraft. Right before he has an argument with Williams the number 3 man in NASA. Gordo is pissed and buzzes NASA in a jet and Williams freaks out and almost grounds Gordo from going up but later gives the go ahead. In space there is a major problem with an almost dead spacecraft as systems are shutting down and Gordo must manually land the spacecraft. He does great and lands near the water pick up area. Almost bulls eye. Later Williams shakes his hand and says " You were the right person for the job".He gets a big ticker tape parade. He is a hero. He goes to the White House to see President LBJ and asks who classified detailed photos he took from his Gemini flight and why. LBJ says soberly "I did son". Much later Gordo learns why... he took excellent accidental photos of Top Secret Area 51.Later we see Gordo is very bitter and mad with Deke the head astronaut and Al Shepard being cutthroat and pushing Gordon aside and not allowing him to go up in an Apollo flight. Just back up, backup, backup. He thinks he won't get another chance and retires from NASA. General Curtis Le May says Gordon may get a star (Brig. General) if he stays in the Air Force but regulations say a General can't fly a one seat jet. So Gordo retires from the Air Force as a Colonel.Later Gordo talks about a UFO sighting he had flying a jet over Germany. Officially its explained as a weather balloon. Gordo says that's the first weather balloon I've ever seen with landing gear. He also talks about the Air Force Blue Book and UFO sightings. So far so good. I enjoy this and have an open mind. Then he talks about that we have actually been visited by intelligent ETs. OK the book is still great. I read Chariots of the Gods and still have an open mind.Later we see Gordon in a company that discovers a 3000 year old site that predated the Mayans and Incas. He lets the authorities have the artifacts rather than his company plunder them. He states it was the legal and right thing to do. Gordon becomes a VP with Disney involved with advanced technology.So far the book is fascinating and 5 star. Then the crapola starts. He meets Valerie Ransone who claims she gets mental communications with extraterrestrial life. Later Gordon meets a PHD scientist claiming to have taken a ride up in an alien spacecraft. Its gets even more unbelievable as Valerie says the aliens want to take Gordon up with the scientist again. Just before Cooper goes out to go up Valerie tells Cooper the aliens have had second thoughts.I am sorry Gordon Cooper and Bruce Henderson I'm a hard science kind of guy. As an amateur astronomer of over 40 years I do believe that there is intelligent life out there. New Exoplanets are being discovered it seems monthly. There are millions of galaxies each holding billions of stars. The probability is that there MUST be other life out there. However INMO it may not look like us or even be carbon based. Who knows. At this time its too far out for me to believe that Valerie and others are getting metal communications from ETs. Show ANY proof of these mental communications. Sorry Gordon Cooper and Bruce Henderson you left me way out there in space with this one. 90% a 5 star book then very late rapid degradation to 3 1/2 to 4 stars. Gordon Cooper a great American hero with many wonderful accomplishments. I am sad Gordon Cooper passed away but at this time I can't believe in mental communications with ETs. Its too big a Leap of Faith for me.

Leap of Faith: An Astronaut's Journey into the Unknown (Mass Market Paperback) was a great five star book by Gordon Cooper. In it he highlights his two fameous space flights during projects Mercury and Gemini and shares lots of interesting gossip about the manned space program. He also discusses his life story in general and an abundance of tales about his UFO experiences and much more. Some of the information he relates to his readers is questionable, but a tribute to Gordo's openmindedness.

I studied with Professor Gilman at JTS thirty years ago and he is just as engaging in print as he is in real life. A must have addition to anyone's library whether you are Conservative, Reform or Frum.

In the Death of Death, Conservative Jewish theologian Neil Gillman writes a history of the development of Jewish views about the afterlife. He begins by explaining that what Orthodox Jews consider history is in fact simply "myth." Gillman is quite clear that he does not believe that God revealed His word to His special people, but that Judaism is rather the result of some men grasping to understand God. He affirms belief in God and believes that God has sown knowledge of Himself throughout his creation, but to believe that God has revealed Himself to man is to engage in idolatry. This position is much more assumed than demonstrated.Most of the rest of the book is a much more straightforward presentation of the history of Jewish views on the afterlife. Like most scholars, Gillman finds little evidence of firm views on any kind of afterlife in the earlier books of the Old Testament. His review of the relevant passages is informative as he traces an increased concern for the afterlife, culminating in the affirmation of bodily resurrection. Although Gillman entertains the possibility that foreign influence was at least partly responsible for the development of resurrection belief, he seems to lean towards it being a natural outgrowth of core Jewish belief.As we move beyond the Old Testament, Gillman continues tracing Jewish beliefs, noting the introduction of the concept of the immortality of the spirit. His use of sources is somewhat less helpful here. Although Jewish sources are reviewed proficiently, he gives insufficient attention to first century Christian sources. While lamenting a lack of sources about the Pharisees - and dismissing the Torah as a credible source for their beliefs - he gives short shrift to valuable Christian sources from the time period, such as Paul's letters and Acts.Gillman then charts the "Canonization" of bodily resurrection in Jewish thought through the Talmud and into the Middle Ages. He spends an entire chapter on Maimonides, a Jewish philosopher whom he credits with moving Judaism away from bodily resurrection to an emphasis on spiritual resurrection. Thereafter, he discusses the mystics, who also played a role in spiritualizing Jewish afterlife belief. Add in the Enlightenment and Jewish intellectual, though not religious, assimilation into modern Europe, and the Reform and Conservative Judaism of the 19th century has largely abandoned bodily resurrection, once the cornerstone of its faith, in favor of spiritual immortality, the hallmark of Judaism's long-time competitor, Greek philosophy. Little space is given to the Orthodox.But Gillman's book is not just about history, it is about the present. He sees a return to an emphasis on bodily resurrection in Reform and Conservative Judaism, though still couched in terms such as "symbol" and "myth." The return to an emphasis on bodily resurrection is explained well as a return to Judaism's emphasis on God's concern for the present life and his power to shape our futures. But as with the author's own apparent re-embrace of bodily resurrection, it is unclear just what is meant. It is accepted, but only as "myth" and "symbol." To Gilman, to believe it is literally true is to "trivialize" God. This assertion, like the one that to believe God revealed His word to Moses is to engage in anti-Jewish idolatry, are disappointingly conclusory. It comes across more as one mired in quasi-naturalistic assumptions than a rigorous theological or even philosophical conclusion.The history in the book, with the exception of neglecting Christian sources and the knowledge they can shed on Second Temple Jewish afterlife beliefs, is well presented. Gillman ably covers 3,000 years of Jewish attitudes on the afterlife. Also well presented is the reasoning behind certain shifts in beliefs and the leading thinkers behind those shifts. The book, however, is steeped in the author's less-than-adequately-explained use of terms such as "symbol" and "myth" and "literal," that left this reader at times wondering just what it is that was really believed. Put another way, what do you really believe if you say you believe in bodily resurrection but only as a "symbol" and not as a "literal" redemption? In what way does that give hope and affirm God's goodness and value for the present human condition? There may be answers to these questions but I did not find them in this book.

As a Christian who is not qualified to either affirm or dispute Gillman's studies, I do however find them fascinating. Modern Christianity has lost sight of the fact that its faith flows from, as opposed to being completely severed from, Judaism. Heaven or Hell when you die is the default view, but does it have its base in the Hebrew Scriptures? Gillman can shed light on this.

I have not read the book in it's entirely yet. It has a great deal of scientist's views on God and death. Lots of biblical content. Nice to see a book from the Jewish perspective.

I just started reading the first edition of this book 1997 and turned to page 121 and so may come back and add to these comments. However, on page 121 Gillman states "Jesus is quite explicit" in Acts 23:6-7 : "I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees; I am on trial concerning the hope of the resurrection of the dead." The author cited the "The Holy Bible," New Revised Standard Version, 1989 Oxford University Press edition as the source of this quote. However, I looked up Acts 23:6 in that Bible edition and read:" When Paul noticed that some were Sadducees and others were Pharisees, he called out in the council, 'Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. I am on trial concerning the hope of the resurrection of the dead' ." So Gillman was actually quoting only part of verse 6 and not also verse 7 and left out the first part of verse 6 beginning with "When Paul ... "and ending with "Brothers."So the Bible is attributing these words to Paul and not Jesus as the author Gillman stated.. This leads me to question the whole integrity and reliability of Gillman's book. How carefully and or truthfully has Gillman quoted sources? Was he intentionally giving a partial quote to support his contention that the words he quoted were spoken by Jesus?

I am so glad Amazon offered this little gem. I would never have read it, otherwise, and I would have missed a beautiful book. Each tiny story is like a perfect haiku. One would not need to ever have known anything about Buddhism to enjoy them. Their messages are quite clear, and there is pureness in each one.

Is it because it's "contemporary" that these stories have no value at all? Silly, pointless, no ah-ha moments here. Not happy, sad or comforting, just snippets of meaninglessness.

Have read all of Todd Walton's novels. All wonderful reads. BUDDHA IN A TEACUP, comprised of many short stories with a Buddist bent, is another great read from a talented writer! I am a reader who doesn't usually choose to read short stories but since it is a Walton book, I bought it and was delighted with each story. I'd love to read more about many of these characters. Some of the them I recognized from other of his reads which made it even more fun (to think I was 'in' the know somehow). In any case, this would make a great gift for anyone who loves to read....loves real character studies, even in a short story format. Bravo, Mr. Walton. And I would suggest to anyone who reads this that they get hold of (ie: buy) more of his books for many hours of fabulous entertainment!

Each two to five page story in Buddha in a Tea Cup is a tiny world unto itself, and each presents characters during a small moment of epiphany.Like sitting in a park, quietly observing the lives that pass you by, reading this book allows one a peek into the human condition as played out in individual daily dramas, and to catch these ordinary people at a time when they look up for a moment, and realize something basic about their lives.With an economy of words, Todd Walton paints these little scenes, without preaching or driving home his point with a hammer. I was lucky enough to listen to it on audio, read by the author himself, and the gentleness of his words into sentences into paragraphs into stories into a book is an amazing, quiet achievement.Here's the highest compliment I can give: I wish I had written this! (Of course, I couldn't have, because Mr. Walton crafts each story as individually and in such a surprising manner as can be the work of only one unique individual.In the mood for some very subtle Buddhist-themed vignettes? These brief tales are realistic in their renderings, but also parables with fanciful premises. The characters come to life but their stories resonate like poems, and therefore they are best read singly, one a night, before sleep - they fall into the unconscious with a little splash of recognition. Every now and then characters reappear, farther down their roads, and then it's irresistible to go back hunting for their earlier incarnation. In such cases the Aha! experience is not doubled but squared. "Enlightenment" is the effect, but it seems to come from within. The light that brightens at the end always comes in the form of relenting, as when an impasse dissolves, the expected disappointment fails to materialize, or turns out to be a blessing in disguise. Sometimes the final illumination throws dark shadows, when the moment of grace is refused in advance, and the refuser sees ... too late. Walton is an artist of the possible, not the inevitable. Readers looking for a more commodious imaginary world to inhabit long summer afternoons, might prefer his Under the Table Books, a rousing picaresque full of character and event, with a 21st-century edge to it.

I don't really like short stories for the most part. Most end when I've invested in the characters and want more than the story has delivered. These sketches move past quickly and, like traditional Buddhist stories, are deceptively simple. Then they end at an unexpected moment. The point often has slipped past me until I slow down, reflect on it for a while and use my own life experiences to find what is beneath the surface. The stories have a wonderful way of drawing me in as a partner in finding the meaning of life and love in the depth of simplicity.

I first read this book when I was 7 or 8 years old and even though it omits a number of large locomotives, including the Big Boy, Yellowstone, H-8 class Allegheny, and Southern Pacific Cab Forward, I still remember some interesting locomotives, including the Class 25 condensing locos built for South Africa, the PA class diesel locos built for the Santa Fe by ALCO, the ICE electric locos, the Shinkansen, and the P36 passenger steam locomotives built in the USSR. It is important to note that this book was published before the introduction of the Shinkansen 700 locos, Transrapid, and Acela high-speed trains.

A wonderful coffee table book packed with information about trains and especially locomotives. It's not comprehensive and is perhaps 10 years old, but it's a great book to pour over. Of particular note are the lovely large color profile illustrations, similar to what you find in many of military vehicle books. They are very well done and are worth the cost of the book alone.

A history of years is in this book.. And, it go's on to explain everything you would want to know.. I. always wanted to know about trains and the history of them and never got around to it.. Then one day it hit me.. Why not now that i have more time to enjoy the days having a cup of coffee and reading.. So i began my search and found a whole load of books about them.. This is my third purchase of a book on trains and its loaded with information and pictures.. A fantastic investment in learning about some of our worlds innovative wonders..

It wasn't what I thought it would be about. The book only covers locomotives throughout history from around the world, which is nice, but it doesn't cover "trains" as in freight cars, passenger cars, cabooses, etc.

She combines Chinese medicine (she's an acupuncturist) along with her personal experiences helping her mother fight her own severe attack of shingles. Hits the mark.

I tend to not give 5 stars just because that's a perfect score. This book may not be perfect but it really is very useful. I'm an acupuncturist and glad to have all this info. I'll also recommend it to my patients. The author became an expert in the treatment of shingles when her mother suffered terribly from it. She has tried several products for internal and external use in treating shingles and relieving some of the very unpleasant symptoms and lists them in the book. I definitely recommend the book to those with the disease or those who treat it. I hope the author writes more books on treating particular conditions naturally.

Again Ms. Bleecker has written a concise but complete guide to an ailment that affects a surprisingly large number of people. I relate! Recently my own mother suffered from shingles. Though it was relatively mild, it was obviously painful and embarrassing! Traditional medicine seemed to only go so far. This book puts the power back in the hands of the patient and those tasked with their care. Ms. Bleecker's tenderness toward her own mother is evident, and it clearly is the "back story" to this book.

I would recommend this book for anyone suffering from shingles, especially post peripetic pain. Only place I have found suggestions for pain relief and specific examples of what to try and how the herbs, etc work.

As with all of her books, trust Deborah to compile the relevant information and put it together in informative and easy to read, comprehensive format. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

I'm in a ministry school and love to take this Bible to lectures and sermons at church. It's so much easier to write notes in a Bible that is set up for that. It's fairly heavy and bulky though so not the one you want to carry around just anytime. Love the color and the imprinted design on the cover also.

This is a beautiful bible. The comfort print makes it easy to read. I like the NIV version and this is a very nice journaling bible.

I love this Bible. I bought it because I wanted one I could write in and mark up. The levers at the sides are great for taking notes. It lays flat whether you're in psalms or genesis. The only thing I wish it had was references in the back of verses to reference for different things like love, sadness, friendship, fear, etc. But absolutely love this Bible.

Perfect little bible. The pages aren't too thin and there is perfect amount of space in the margin to take notes. Really pretty cover too.

This is a very lovely Bible but the particular one that I received was flawed. It was sold as a new Bible and I feel it should have been sold at a discount as a flawd Bible. When I opened the Bible box before I even touched it the first thing I noticed was a flaw on the cover. The faux leather is engraved and there’s some kind of nick or irregularity in the engraving on the front cover. And on the back cover the end of the stitching is not tucked in but has come out. I’ve included some measurement pictures in case someone is interested. Mind you, this is the 2018 edition. Additions in another year are a different size. I’m still deciding if I’m going to return this Bible or not due to the flaws.

I have been looking for a Bible that I can express scripture through art and words. This Bible works for me. I really appreciate the red letter edition and the wide margins. The lines are good guidelines but don't compete with my art. I have used highlighters and colored pens and pencils with no bleeding. I have not tried paints. I am very satisfied with my purchase.

Overall, it’s a very informative book that will give you quality help on how to improve your personal life.
