I have adopted a class that is now in First Grade. The school's motif this year is the butterfly, so I promptly ordered about 5 books on butterflies. I have to tell you that I ordered the Cat in the Hat book because I thought it would be cute. I didn't really expect much substance. I was WRONG!! The Cat in the Hat Butterfly Book was so AMAZING that I promptly ordered all 12 or so other books in the series like, "Is a Camel a Mammal?", etc. When I was growing up, the Cat in the Hat books were cute, but full of fluff. NOW the Cat in the Hat books are PACKED with information! I even learned a few things I didn't know!!! You will not go wrong with ANY of the Cat in the Hat books, but the Butterfly Book is simply brilliant! Excellent book for young children!

I bought this book for a 10 year old special needs child (her reading level is probably about that of a 5 or 6 year old). This was perfect for her. It is an excellent match for her reading level because most of the words are easy enough that she likes to read it to others, yet there are still many words for her to learn so we help her with those. She loves it when we read it to her too.I bought this book to accompany the Insect Lore Live Butterfly Garden (also bought from Amazon) for raising live butterflies from caterpillars. They really made the perfect pair (I even wrapped them together). I wanted her to be able to anticipate and recognize each stage as they go through their changes. She sure understands the stages now! This book takes you through each step of their life-cycle, plus gives many other fun facts about butterflies. It shows what several kinds of butterflies look like (including the Painted Lady Butterfly, which is what you get in the Butterfly Garden kit), and even discusses the fascinating migration of the Monarchs. Even I learned some things, and I was not expecting that!But the best thing about this book is that she loves it so much and it is encouraging her to read. Her mom is also impressed and now thinks she should get more Cat in the Hat books. What more could I ask for?

Gotta love Dr. Seuss - Read it to a class of 1st grade children - they all were totally interested and some type of interaction on each page.Loved it.

Cute book but not appropriate for under eight-It is lengthy and also goes into some detail about the length of time butterflies live-Not your typical Dr Suess book-

My 2 1/2 year old daughter loves the butterflies in this book and the rhyming keeps it really fun. It's very informative, but still Dr. Seussy enough to keep it entertaining. I was actually very impressed with how they got all the information into the rhyming format. Probably meant for older children, but my little girl likes all the pictures/drawings.

Used this book to teach the butterfly lifecycle! My first grades loved the book. The first half was all about the butterfly lifecycle, and the second half gave information about butterflies such as how they see, eat, and fly south. It even gives examples of different kinds of butterflies.

Super cute book. Well written wroth a ton of information. My 3 and 5 year old love this book and learned a lot. I ordered the butterfly santuary wit this. ... fun for the summer!

For Christmas, I made my granddaughter a quilt with butterflies all over it. I wanted to give her a book to go along with her quilt. This "My, Oh My -- A Butterfly" book was by far the best one I found. It was so interesting that I could not put the book down before reading the whole thing. It is a fun book for early elementary students.

I would place Musashi-san's Book of the Five Rings on par with classical teachers like Sun Tzu, Laozi. His book lacks detail compared to some of the classics, but that is one of its strengths. He spends approximately 1/6th of the short book on the movements and tactics for sword-fighting, which may be of varying value to readers - depending on their interest on the subject.Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" places emphasis on large scale military operations; which lends itself to modern business (in the mind of the reader, and in many modern expositions on a domain-by-domain basis) - supply chains, market saturation, globalization, operational budgeting, etc., Musashi-san's "Way" is likewise applicable. Musashi-san focuses on large scale and small scale (individual) battle, offering useful comparisons and contrasts. For me, the individual focus was extremely insightful and personal. It may suit individuals who have situations of high responsibility or discretion (e.g., negotiations, debate, martial arts, software development), or cases where an individual does not have an abundance of resources or allies - and opportunity is gained through competition.The book is highly quotable, and I found myself reading this short <100 page book over a month's time because every few pages gave me something to think about, research, mull over, and discuss. I wish I had known about this book sooner, as he does an excellent job demonstrating this approach to learning.

Reading Musashi is a right of passage. The man was a complete badass, on a level many of us will only ever dream of.That said, he excelled in killing people, not writing books, and this reads exactly how you would expect a world-renowned killer would write. The passages and subjects are scattered and disjointed, and at times make very little sense. Sometimes hes describing precise sword movements and battle tactics, next hes talking about extremely esoteric ideas in a rambling, stream-of-consciousness sort of way.I'd say what you get out of the book is entirely subjective. It's been said that this is the Japanese version of Sun Tzu's "The Art of War." All Japanese executives have read it. Martial arts masters have read it. Historical scholars and enthusiasts as well. If you have the ability to take 18th century martial arts tactics and apply it to modern day situations, you could gain a great deal from this book. If you read it literally... well you may just have a laugh and write it off as the crazy mutterings of an old man.Either way its a cheaply priced, reasonably-sized book, and this is one of the better translations out there. Definitely add it to your collection and give it a go. Plus you'll be able to brag that you've read Musashi, a man who died undefeated with over 60 confirmed kills in martial combat! Total badassery!

This book, though not practical in today's instant gratification world, is necessary to teach those of us our grandmother's knowledge that is dying out with our grandmother's and mothers. Who knows how to test an oven temperature? An oven that isn't modern, has no thermometer or setting dial? Who knows the proper procedure for canning? The supplies you might need? Think you'll never need that information? When Irma Rombauer wrote this cookbook she didn't think she had a need for the knowledge being a wealthy woman with kitchen help. Then an economic collapse. Then her husband committed suicide. She was 54. Good thing she did have this knowledge and decided to pass it on. This cookbook does more than teach recipes. It teaches etiquette and dinner party directions? Do you know which fork goes where? What is the difference in dinner settings for formal and informal eating? Wedding cakes? The information in this cookbook is invaluable. Every mother, daughter, daughter in law, etc. Should have this on their shelf. I am so glad I found a 1964 edition as the 1972 edition was revised and doesn't have all the information I wanted. I don't cook in a microwave and I don't want my Joy of Cooking to reflect microwave cooking. I found and purchased a 1942 edition as wel, which includes wartime ration recipes. Get yourself a copy, if for no other reason, to learn.

I cannot say enough positive things about this cookbook. I have over a thousand cookbooks literally. At one point I collected them. As I have matured I have found that this single one seems to be my go-to book for anything I don't know how to cook yet. So far I have only found a couple of recipes that aren't in here. One of them is how to make green tea Mochi ice cream. For those of you who aren't familiar with it it is a specialized Japanese confectionery ice cream. Everything else has always been there along with an explanation of the philosophy behind cooking the dish. I love it. I have multiple copies of this one myself. I have already handed one of these copies down to one of my sons. I have purchased three more copies this past Christmas to give to my sons who are married so that their wives can pull up recipes for things they don't know how to cook. I would recommend this book over every other cookbook I have ever had read or seen. This is definitely the number one cookbook out there and I feel like I know what I'm talking about.

I bought this as a gift for a teenager who is learning to cook. He has had it for week and is fascinated with all he is learning about food and cooking basics. Within 24 hours of getting the book, he sent back a thank you gift of delicious vanilla ice cream for one of the recipes. I have given earlier editions to each of my kids, and they are still in regular use.

This is the sewn-binding edition by the daughter of the original author. The subsequent version is by the grandson (I think) and, although I like the recipes in both editions just fine, there are some differences in terms of fat phobias in the later edition. With the latest findings and admissions by the FDA, we are now returning to natural animal fats (butter, lard) and avoiding processed oils. But, the main reason I bought this edition after owning the newer one (by Ethan Becker) is that it has a sewn binding. The book is composed of several smaller "booklets" that have pages the loop around at the binding and come back elsewhere in the book. Each booklet is sewn with strong thread through its binding and the booklets are glued together and form the 800-odd pages of the book. This is the RIGHT way to bind a book. The newer edition is an all glued binding, and the third or fourth time you open the book to the same place, and press it flat so the pages don't turn on you while your hands are covered in dough, the pages will start to fall out. I was sick of my "loose leaf" copy of the 2006 edition, so I ordered this and I love it so much that I threw out the newer (but disheveled) one. By the way, don't even bother with the "unauthorized" and ghost-written 1997 edition. Look it up in Wikipedia for the history of the editions.

Like a good millennial, I use Google and Pinterest to find a lot of recipes. I read ingredient lists off the browser on my phone. But sometimes, I want something reliable, detailed, and solid. So I turn to this book! I love that it provides all these little tips, tricks, and explanations about the different foods and ingredients. It's actually better than the internet when I'm trying to look up the best way to do something. It's also just fun to read through, even when I'm not cooking. Anyways, this is a must-have for every kitchen, whether you're 18 or 80. Joy of Cooking is the best, most thorough cookbook I've ever used (way better than the Better Homes and Gardens one my mom used to use). It's improved my cooking 100%, and I'm planning to use it until I'm 100 years old and can't see or cook anything. I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH.

Grau is best noted for "The Bear Went Over The Mountain", a series of Russian tactical studies of incidents in their war in Afghanistan. This is his attempt to tell the story from the Afghan side. Together they are must reading for anyone interested in the Afghan wars.The Russians don't come out well in either book. They were slow, inflexible, tied to the roads and their armored vehicles and unable to cope with the Afghan style of war. On the other hand, as this book makes clear, the Afghans were not supermen. In addition to the limits put on them by their logistics and lack of unified organization, they were generally inept soldiers, if very strong fighters.The Afghans had more success against the Russians than the Taliban have had against the Coalition troops, yet much of their methods have remained fundamentally the same. The major exception is the increased use of IEDs in this war compared to the last.The book is rich in tactical lessons for modern combat in Afghanistan. For example, both books make clear the importance of controlling the heights above the valleys where the main action is. The role of helicopters comes out very clearly, although the Russian use was hesitant and not always effective.One of the strengths of both these books is the unconsciousness of the people telling the story. In neither case to they come out and say "this worked" or "we made a mistake here". Instead the narrators tell their stories and leave Grau -- and the readers to draw their own conclusions.

This book should have been required reading for every American and NATO officer involved in the Afghan War. I found it to be very informative in understanding the nature of conducting warfare in Afghanistan. The book is mainly a collection of first hand accounts of Mujahideen leaders and fighters of their logistics and fighting tactics against the Soviet forces and the Soviet trained, communist controlled Afghan Army in the 1980's. The book relates a group of stories by location and type of activity and then critiques the tactics of the Mujahideen and their enemies in these combat actions. It goes into some detail about the historical cultural lifestyle of the Afghan people who have successfully prevailed against the greatest invading armies going back to Alexander The Great (+/- 300 B.C.). The authors point out that even though there are major tribal and language differences in the country, the people will put aside their "blood" feuds to fight what they perceive to be a common enemy invader. It was interesting for me to see how little the fighting tactics have changed over the past three decades since the Soviet pullout in spite of technological advancements in war implements.

Both this and "The Bear Went Over the Mountain" should be essential reading for all personnel deploying to Afghanistan. People who have deployed to Afghanistan are able to visually imagine a lot of the vignettes within due to the similarly used locations names. While looking for a few words to accompany a photo of umiaks (seal skin whaling boats) framed in Northern Lights I'd made a few years ago, I came across these lines from okpik's poem "Tulunigraq: Something Like a Raven": Quarrtsiluni sitting in silence where all things and all beings reach back into time before iron and oil.Okpik arranges her images across the page in a manner that forces the reader to go slowly, to breathe slowly, to see, and to hear, and I felt myself being taken back - to Alaska's North Slope, to the village of Point Hope and to other places I'd been in the far north, and then further back, to places I had never been - to old Tikigaq, to villages and settings scattered across Alaska and Greenland and beyond, to a time, indeed, "before iron and oil." Okpik's writing is sure and precise, at times reminiscent of carefully sifting through an archeological dig, anticipating what might be found, in awe of what is found. The culture she invites the reader into is one of myth-making, spirituality, subsistence hunting and gathering, veneration of elders and ancestors and a closeness to sinew and cold. The landscape is one of ice and sea, of magma cooling, the vast sweep of the tundra. Threaded through this are spirits and caribou, whales and ground squirrels, edible plants and seal oil lamps, Eucharist wafers and hooligan jigs. Okpik has given us poems that take us to places and to times few of us have experienced or will experience. The journey is mesmerizing.

This one I was recommended to read by one of my good friend who had already bought it and was very excited about it.This is a fun book that we read as a bedtime story with my nephew. It is also fun to read before a walking time because you can draw connections about that cute dog and fnny situations from the story.Adorable story, amazing illustrations and great characters! Thisbook is so kind and warm that will be one of the best in our collection. I'm looking forward to new delightful stories from Jessica Neal. She is really great!

My granddaughter and I have read this book many times and we love it very much. This is such a cute book with wonderful pictures for a 4-year old and a 67-year old. We will just keep reading this book until the next one comes out. We do have the other two books in this series and are excited to see if another one is coming out.

If you love dogs you have to read this book to your children. In easy rhyming form it tells a story of a dog’s adventure in the park. In a simple way it describes what the dog loves and he is curious about. I highly recommend it for reading to young children.

Bought it for my neighbors daughter's birthday. Kalea (sp0 hasn't given me a book report yet but I'm sure she liked it. She'll be getting another long dog book for Christmas.
