At age 18, George Jackson, the author of the letters collected in this book, pleaded guilty to a charge of armed robbery on the advice of his court-appointed lawyer. Although Jackson was told he would receive a lighter sentence if he pleaded guilty, his actual sentence was one year to life. Jackson served his remaining eleven years being shuttled from one California prison to another. By happenstance he actually did serve a life sentence for stealing $70 because he was shot and killed by a prison guard during a purported escape attempt.The collection of letters begin in 1967 and conclude in 1970 (letters prior to 1967 were destroyed for some unexplained reason). Jackson wrote his letters without any intention of publishing them. The early letters are primarily to his parents and are of minor interest. These letters assured his family that he was doing well, and often requested books, or other items such as a typewriter. The letters become somewhat repetitive, but they reveal a man sensitive to how his incarceration impacted his family.Missing from this volume, for the most part, are Jackson’s politically-oriented letters; these letters are collected in another book entitled Blood in My Eye. Underlying all of his letters is a political sensibility reflecting black nationalism and Maoist thought. The political aspect of his writings become more overt in the last hundred pages of the book when letters to his lawyer and to other activists such as Angela Davis are presented. These pages are the most interesting ones in the book.Jackson wrote in a simple, unadorned style that makes his letters engaging and easy to read. He resolved to make his imprisonment a period of self-education. He read voraciously, determined to increase his vocabulary. He stated: "I met Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Engels, and Mao when I entered prison and they redeemed me." The influence of these authors becomes increasingly apparent and his working vocabulary shows consistent improvement.Although he became a Black Panther while in prison, no mention of that fact appears in these letters; there is only a single reference to a recorded letter from Huey P. Newton brought to him by one of his visitors. In another letter he praises the efforts of the Black Panthers. Nothing more. Apparently all of these letters were relegated to Blood in My Eye. Both books became best-sellers, but Jackson did not survive to enjoy this success.Very highly recommended. Five stars for its insight into the mind of a revolutionary. The vigor of the final hundred pages make up for the banality of the preceding two hundred pages.

Got around to reaching this timeless piece. The critique, the confusion, the clarity and the candor of this dynamic person was reflected in a series of letters demonstrating the insidious nature of racism and power in our society. There were parts that felt like he was writing about our current times. In some ways it felt prophetic and in other ways it felt outdated but all in all you can’t argue with the thinking that it generates as you read each letter. Enter the mind of a man that pushed hard to make his time in prison count for something bigger than himself. Engage his thoughts and challenge your own thinking.

I enjoyed reading this letters George Jackson wrote to various family members, friends and the people who tried to help him get out of prison. He couldn't give "detailed accounts" of what was going on, but you can imagine from some of the things he was able to write about, what he and others were going through. It's unfortunate that they never proved him guilty of the money theft, and so very unfortunate that he was given one year to "life" for stealing! As he clearly states, so many brothers were in jail during that time who, initially were "not guilty", but by the time a parole came up, he was guilty of "something" that was brought on by mere survival in prison. All the disappointments he went through with every parole hearing denials, lies and manipulations! Had I not read the book on the life of Angela Davis first, I would have been hopeful he was going to get out of prison while reading, "they said If I don't get in any trouble in six months (3 months, a year), I can have a parole hearing", only to be disappointed to read there was a new panel and they made no such promises were made or they did something to provoke him so he WOULD get in trouble and his hearing was denied. I recommend this reading to as many young men should starting at the age of 14 - give them a BETTER perspective on what it's like to be in prison and hopefully deter them from going down that path!

This was an interesting book. It shows how one criminal mistake can land you in the abyss of imprisonment and when you're a young and poor black man the challenge to get released becomes that much harder.

The topics in this book, which was written decades ago addresses issues of today. Reagan was mentioned, Cosby, and idiotic people being given unrestrained power to run the country

With the utmost respect to Ben Hogan, I found this book to be interesting but I didn't gain as much from it as I did from Harvey Penick's Little Red Book. One of the main reasons is that the book is rather dry and wordy/confusing at times. The artwork was a fantastic aid in understanding the lessons, but I often found myself re-reading the section to understand what he was talking about. Some of the lessons would introduce an advanced aspect right towards the conclusion of the chapter. I often had to go online and do a search to see if someone else could explain it better, such as supination of the wrist at impact.While Harvey's Little Red Book didn't have artwork or diagrams, I could understand his teachings and his anecdotes were interesting. I just felt Five Lessons was very dry.Overall: 3/5 stars. Not as mandatory as the Little Red Book.

Hogan's book is a short, but comprehensive analysis of the golf swing. His stated purpose of giving the average weekend golfer the tools to develop a repeatable golf swing has, in my opinion, been met. The fundamentals he espouses are few, and simple enough to implement without causing one to overthink. I found his views about grip and stance, and their importance in setting up the rest of the swing, particularly helpful. If you're a student of the game, this book is a prerequisite before reading the multitude of expert analyses of Hogan's swing that are available elsewhere. The advanced golfer interested in developing his/her knowledge of shaping shots and ball flight won't find information here. But if you're like me and want to develop better consistency of contact with all your clubs and eliminate anxiety as you stand over the ball, then this book is for you.

I'm a novice golfer that has been away for the sport for several years. Getting back into it I wanted to find a resource that took a simple and direct approach to the golf swing. I think I have found it. In a sea of technology, social media marketing and five steps programs to driving the ball 300+ yards, this book gets right down to business and what the golf swing is really all about. If you take the teachings and then go online and see the many slow motion videos of Mr. Hogan's swing, then you can really see how it all comes together. And the illustrations in the book are very effective and well done too. I'm a visual learner, so that was important to me. Lastly, I'll say that I love the way this book is written. Somehow it seems to give you a sense not just about the swing, but about the man behind perhaps the most beautiful swing in golf history. Very beautifully executed book.

Combating a little a stationary small ball with a stick for the purpose of sinking it in a hole 400 yards away with hazards to avoid on the way is a fascinating concept of a game to anyone beside golfers. Hogan went through how he mastered, if there is such a thing as he puts it, the game over decades of learning, practicing, and improving. Before I took golf at a later age I calculated how many strokes of 7 iron I need to do a 6000 yard course. The answer of course is 40 shots. I doubled that for putts and goofs which makes it 80. I thought there isn't much to master that game and it has been my daily challenge for 20 years. The book shows 8 specific motions to do that. Success is not guaranteed though. Very enjoyable reading.

This book is all any starting novice golfer will need for proper instructions on full swing. For short game, I will recommend Getting Up And Down by Tom Watson. I found numerous videos for tips available in Youtube largely useless or misleading especially for the novice. To learn powerful and repeatable full swing, this book is best because it explains all the steps from the grip to downswing as one coherent system that is what Mr. Hogan refers to as chain actions. Having said that, this book elicits some questions, as well. For example, though Mr. Hogan devoted Chapter 2 to stance and posture, unexplicably he does not talk about address. In two other equally great books, Getting Up And Down by Tom Watson and Golf My Way by Jack Nicklaus, the authors emphasize address should reflect so called hitting geometry in which the hands are ahead of the ball location. The reader of this book can only guess what Mr. Hogan's thought should be on proper address from one of the illustrations in the book, where remarkably to me at least, the club is held almost perfectlly vertical (pg. 24)! I can also see the same vertical address in numerous videos of him. Another example is the position of the grip at the top of backswing that he aptly refers to as the crossroad. He emphasizes in this book the left arm and grip should stay in the backswing plane which is defined by the shoulders and the ball location. This is a point I found very useful and follow. However, it is widely known that his grip at the crossroad was far below this plane and, as a matter of fact, one of the flattest of all PGA pros according to Jack Nicklaus. I wonder therefore whether his emphasis on supination (rotation of the hands/wrists in the hitting area) is a way to compensate for his low top position. The starting golfers should not mind this point and instead should focus on his teaching to stay on the backswing plane and that will work nicely. All in all, I have no doubt this is the first book any starting golfers should read and refer to whenever they have questions when they practice full swing. They will benefit immeasurably.

In his book, Ben Hogan offers simple lessons of how to hold a club, the proper stance, back swing, and downswing. The lessons have significantly improved my game with me hitting good, straight shots. The distances for each club have increased twenty percent. The book may have been written in the fifties, but the lessons are timeless.

One of the best books I've read in pest control using organic material.Pests repellents that are found in local supermarket are sometimes harmful. Perfect box look brand new

I have waited for this set of books for a few years ever since I saw it was due to be published. It finally was published and arrived the other day. WOW is the best I can say. Koto Bolofo did did some wonderful photographs. Even the roof top garden was pictured. There is a short commentary at the end of each product's photo journey which adds interest plus some facts too. He captures emotions and faces and small features in an almost intimate way or in some cases avant-garde. It certainly isn't a step by step photo journey but more an artistic one. The inside book cover pages are that lovely Hermes orange. The 11 books have a kind of rough binding which contrasts with the glossy pictures inside. They come in a slip cover also in Hermes orange color.The price of the book has gone up from the original estimated price on the Steidl website.

With great anticipation I waited for the release of this book which was delayed for over one year by the publisher.Once Amazon UK alerted me that it was available I purchased it the next day.Waiting for standard shipping to Taiwan where I live I was thrilled to know it was on it's way.Due to the very expensive cost of this book and the fact that on previous book purchases from Amazon UK books were received damaged I alerted Amazon UK to take extra care in packing.I received a token computer generated answer that they would alert their shipping department.Bottom line was the parcel was received damaged,the shipping carton was double the size of the book which resulted in slipping and sliding during shipping,bubble was inadequate and used only on one side of the carton*** NOTE TO AMAZON UK PACKERS A BOX HAS 4 SIDES ***,the shipping carton was smashed,the outside carrying case that is provided by the publisher to protect the contents was damaged,the Hermes orange box case that holds the 12 volumes was damaged and some of the books were damaged as well.You can well imagine what I said which is not printable here.I contacted Amazon UK and once again received a computer generated answer about how I could return it blah blah blah.A second contact to Amazon UK resulted in another computer generated e-mail with basically the same blah blah blah.But this time offering a 15% discount on the purchase price.I find this amusing when Amazon UK has lowered the selling price from what I originally paid.So bottom line they are asking me to keep a damaged book for the price of a new book if I ordered it again.I am not in the habit of ordering items only to return them or to receive a discount for a problem I did not create to begin with.So Amazon UK I am returning the book including freight at your expense for a full refund,not purchasing it again nor any future products from Amazon UK,USA or any other parts of the world where Amazon ships from.

I ordered this over a year ago and still haven't recieved it. After having been told by Amazon that they had some in stock but ran out they told me the never had it in stock. After several emails back and forth they were never able to tell me when they would get "more". The kicker was when they sent me the publishers info and told me I should contact the publisher. One would think it's Amazons' job to contact the publisher. Finally they just cancelled my order. If I were you I would order it from anyone other than Amazon.

I truly liked the commentary this writer provides in the book. Has very easy to follow recipes and instructions. I also really enjoyed the section about what types of bakeware / cookware you would need to be successful with the casseroles. Definitely a great cookbook for casseroles and those that might want to explore fun recipes.

Comfort food at it's Southern finest with choices such as Bestest Cheese Grits Souffle, Lily's Sweet Onion Pudding, and my favorite River Road Spinach Madeleine.

This is my first Denise Gee cookbook, and I'm Impressed. I opened it, started browsing, and just kept reading -- the writing style is clear, informative, and fun with lots of side notes captioned "Lil' Dish" which give more information about topics from RO*TEL to Crawfish, to Lodge Cast Iron. Beautiful full-page photographs accompany most of the recipes, and the recipes themselves ALL look tasty, like something real Southerners cook in real home kitchens. As a bonus, I finally found out what "YA-YA" means, as in "Gumbo Ya-Ya" and the book "The Ya-Ya Sisterhood" (see recipe on page 54). Highly recommended to everyone who loves down-home Southern cooking. (Five Yums Up!)

Though we do not eat casseroles often, we are enthusiastic about traditional Southern cooking. Several of these recipes are very easy and delicious.

I used to live in the South and these recipes just bring back such wonderful memories. Albeit it wasn't in the deep South, just in the mountains of Kentucky. But it is the South to me since I grew up in Chicago, and didn't understand all the different game that goes into a wonderfully smelling casserole of game meats and veggies. I hope you enjoy this book, and take the time to try some of these mouth watering dishes.

As a Lutheran girl I have always known and loved Luthers catechism(except perhaps when I was in confirmation and was attempting to memorize some of it). This book is a refreshing look at it again. The art work is beautiful and complementary to the format of the book and gives you time to slow down and contemplate the devotional insight and prayer, I am excited to dig into Luthers small catechism once again. Thank you to the author and illustrator for this opportunity. And for those who know the added bonus of quality paper and book presentation will be pleased. Having only just started the book I can see great potential.

I have so many students who love to draw and color, I've been looking for something to get them to interact with the catechism as much as they spend time on other things. This is a great way to get them to interact with Biblical truths in a way the doesn't compromise the narrative of the Bible to get that done.

I love this book. Great illustrations, cohesive but not overly repetitive, and the details are not too small to color. I love the space given to reflect on each page as well. My only negative is the quality of the paper. The paper is thick enough to stop bleed through, the texture is kind of soft and coarse, so colored pencils leave indents on the paper and neighboring pages. Still a very enjoyable book!

This is a beautiful Lutheran catechism. The meditation while coloring beautiful pictures; is relaxing and spiritually rewarding. I purchased this to help me through some difficult situations at church. There is also ample room for journaling!

I love this book because it marries the coloring trend with real, meaty theology. Meditate on the truths of God while illuminating them in pictures. No moral therapeutic deism here.
