I purchased this to help my son understand Algebra 1 & so I could know what they were working on in class. Well, having this book let me follow along, but didn't help simplify the basic steps for someone learning Algebra. I'm not quite sure why this book was selected as the instruction text for thousands of students in Texas public schools. I gave it two stars because I hope to sell this book back when this school year is over & know that one star would make the combined average of stars lower. Thus, making it more difficult to sell my book in the future. I honestly, would never recommend this book to anyone. (There goes it's resale value.)

This well-crafted, affecting memoir offers a detailed account of the author's struggle to survive the German occupation of Lithuania amid the terrorizing, torture and liquidation of most of the inhabitants of the Kaunas ghetto during WWII. Ganor describes the diabolical way the Nazis turned gentile Lithuanians against Jews and, inside the ghetto itself, neighbor against neighbor. Remaining useful to the Germans was the only way to survive, and Ganor recounts how the Jewish Council set up vocational classes to teach carpentry and other skills. In the end, Ganor was unable to avoid being sent to Dachau concentration camp, from which he was liberated at the eleventh hour by American troops. In postwar years he became a self-described "emotional amputee" who worked hard to suppress his bitter memories of the war. Yet in 1992, he experienced an almost miraculous second liberation when he met Clarence Matsumuru, a veteran of the Japanese American unit that liberated Dachau?and the very man who rescued Ganor from the brink of extinction on May 2, 1945. On June 22, 1941, 13-year-old Solly Ganor and his family fled their home in Kaunas, Lithuania, when the German Luftwaffe attacked. Two months later, they were forced to enter the Kaunas ghetto, where they suffered from hunger, backbreaking labor, beatings, disease, cold, fear, and humiliation. Many of the Jews were murdered by the Germans and Lithuanians. In June_ 1944, the author and his father were sent to Dachau, from which they were rescued by Japanese American soldiers on May 2, 1945. The author's sister survived; his mother and brother perished. Forty-seven years later, Ganor was reunited with his rescuer in Israel. Thank you for making Light One Candle available. This book is out of print, and one of the only ways to buy the book is through Amazon. The author has taught me about my family's history. I learned about the Japanese American Concentration Camps in America which occurred simultaneously with Concentration Camps in Germany. I learned about the Matsumura family from California along with Solly's family from Lithuania and the discrimination that both families suffered. Solly Ganor continues to be an avid writer and thinker. Readers can appreciate his willingness to share his experiences, as well as his thorough research of historical events . Thanks to Mr. Ganor, I learned more about my uncle by reading this book than I had ever known before. My uncle passed away in May 1995, shortly before the book was published. Fortunately he and Mr. Ganor were able to meet each other, the rescuer and the survivor. My uncle's name is Clarence Matsumura. I live in Wyoming, where Clarence was born, and where his family was incarcerated at Heart Mountain,

A survivor diary. No blame, no gory details, just a day to day story of the life of a young man that survived some of the atrocities that happened in the past. A very good read that is easy to follow. Should be read in schools just to show what is possible and maybe prevent these things from happening again.

This book, entitled as "Light One Candle" was the memoir of Solly Ganor, a Lithuanian Jew, who was buried in snow during the death march from Dachau Concentration Camp in May, 1945. He was rescued by PVT Clarence Matsumura. The camp was liberated by 522 FA out of 442RCT. The book is proceeded the story of him and his rescuer (from JA's internment camp) simultaneously. It is a great book to read. I recommend.

The frightening thing about this book is that it is built around true occurrences. That people are resilient enough to go through all of this travail and can still bounce back is a monument to humanity. The journey that this book takes one on is oftentimes dark, but then contrast is necessary to any good plot, and while the road is bumpy, the destination is worth the read.

This is a well written book although, it is a hard subject to read.It tells about what happened in Lithuania during WWII with vivid details. It is amazing that Solly and his father and sister survived a the war. There were so many times that they evaded being killed. For those who want to learn more about this subject, this is a must read.

How do you survive one of the worst tragedies in human experience and walk away unscathed? You don’t. All of those faces you see in your mind’s eye never leaves you.

Solly Ganor has told us a powerful story of his life as a child and youth during the Holocaust. His details and honesty reveal a family that loved and cared for each other, worked hard, and took chances to survive. His autobiography with its details helps remove many misconceptions about Jews in the Holocaust that people create from the more common short and simplified accounts of the period. This is not an easy book to read, but it will greatly help you to redefine your understanding and respect for people caught in difficult situations as well as other genocide situations.

This is one of the most moving and courageous books I've ever read. If you are interested in Lithuania during the Holocaust years it's a must read. Solly and Cooky are so brave.

I read a library copy of this wonderful book when it was published 10 years ago and have thought about it and quoted from it more times than I can count. I was so happy to find the Kindle version as a "Daily Deal" and to reread it. It's just as good as I remember.The author is a woman who got dealt a terrible hand. Her husband (a respected and beloved State Patrol officer)was killed in a car wreck, leaving her to raise four children aged 10 and under. In the midst of her pain and panic, she managed to keep her off-beat sense of humor and to observe and remember what brought comfort to her in grief and what DIDN'T. Her husband had planned to become a Unitarian/Universalist minister. Seeking a way to channel her need to help others, she attended seminary in his place and became chaplain to the Maine Warden Service.It's the story of her early life and how it led her (surprisingly) to an adult life as the wife of a cop and the mother of four. It's the story of her husband's death and how she refused the role of "plucky widow" and how she and her children went on living - never forgetting the man who had been so important to them, but finding ways to cope and to honor his memory.It's also the story of a group of law enforcement officers who remain quietly in the background until disaster strikes. At that time, they become the most important people in the world. We think of game wardens as lucky folks with stress-free jobs who get to spend all day communing with nature. In reality, they spend most of their time dealing with people and there are some rough customers out in the woods. It is statistically one of the most dangerous law enforcement jobs in the world and they wear guns and body armor for a reason. They also coordinate search and rescue missions. Some end well; others end in tragedy. It's a stressful job that's frequently heart-breaking. Kate's role is to listen and comfort worried parents, grieving spouses, and the wardens who can't always leave the job behind when they go off duty.This is a beautifully written, thought provoking book by a woman you wish you could have for a friend.
