I am a fan of Gary V, even though I get down on myself sometimes because he calls me out for goofing off. He's right - you have to be all in. I wish I would have bought this book when it first came out. I would be SO much farther along. It's still relevant. Social media has baffled the hell out of me forever, but at least it's helping me figure out what to do that makes sense for me and my customers.

GaryVee is the man. I have read all his books, watched most of his Youtube content, and he inspires and motivates me to keep pushing on. All of his books offer great value and information. The Thank You Economy is probably my third favorite book of his, but it is definitely worth a read. I actually didn't discover Gary until Jab Jab Jab Right Hook came out, after finding him on Youtube and I have been a fan ever since.

The world is divided up into those who believe people are basically good by nature while the rest believe people are selfish by nature. This book is certainly going to appeal to the first group and challenge the second. Like most successful strategies in business it is something that requires investment in both time and effort to be successful, so too with getting on board with the Thank You Economy.The book certainly has many illustrations and conclusions as to why focusing on helping other is good business. The challenge is that getting a return on investment for such a strategy can take time. However, there seems little doubt that most people these days are hesitant to commit to a product or service without some sort of free sample or strong endorsement. This book encourages the reader to go and develop these means and focus them on driving business.The book is well written and easy to read. It does not perhaps provide anything startling for those already in the Thanks You Economy but it does provides a few examples and suggestions where a strategy could be tweaked and enhanced. Those that have their doubts about the Thank You Economy are probably going to dismiss the books as fantasy. I would encourage those people to try and keep and open mind and at least try some of the suggestions from the book. In most cases they won't cost you anything and you might be surprises at the results that ensue.There is certainly enough evidence out there to suggest that, done correctly, the techniques of the Thank You Economy can benefit any business. The greatest challenge for the sceptics is probably just being willing enough to give it a go. So, even if you have your doubts, I'd encourage you to read this book with an open mind and perhaps try a few of the suggestions. For those who have already embraces the ideals championed in the book it is still a worthwhile read in the quest to refine that way that you go about thanking people for interacting with your business.

This is one of a series of books by written and illustrated by Cheryl Harness and published by the National Geographic Society. While I haven't read the others, I can tell you I was extremely impressed by this installment.The book, as one might expect, tells the story of George Washington Carver's life, but it goes beyond that, placing Carver in historical context with the world around him. At the bottom of the text throughout the entire book is an illustrated timeline of other events / inventions / people which were significant at that time. It made for fascinating reading all by itself, providing an interesting snapshot of the world in which Carver lived and worked.Harness is a talented writer and illustrator. The text is easy to read and understand while offering a great deal of information and will keep both young people and adults engaged. The illustrations are rendered in black and white and are a cross between a cartoon and a realistic style. They both break up and add to the text, helping to make the book appealing to a wide spectrum of readers.

Definitely one of the best books I've read about politics and policy in the U.S. government. The author provides a detailed account of the creation of the Dodd-Frank bill, which imposed new laws and regulations over the country's financial system. For a reader like me who has read dozens of books over the years trying to understand the workings of our government amid the growing problems we are facing, this book serves as a valuable tool in understanding why things aren't getting done. The final chapter, entitled "Still Broken," is worth the cost of the book alone — it assesses the reasons for the dysfunction and lack of will to move the country forward, and also explains the current motivations of each political party (HINT: one faction has zero interest in governing at all). Thus the negative reputation the Congress has earned. I will leave you with a few quotes from the last chapter: "Legislating is no longer the principal preoccupation of our legislators —politics is." Also, "...in the era of partisan warfare , substantive leadership in Congress has become as rare as bipartisan harmony. Its decline has come with the ascendency of politics over policy that has transformed the House and Senate over the last generation."If you are sick and tired of how things are run in our U.S. government, and you want to further educate yourself on the "how's" and "why's" things aren't getting done, then be a responsible citizen and start reading books like these, and get out of your bubble of social media and corporate media that barely does a decent job of properly informing you.

I have been studying the substance of the Dodd Frank act elsewhere (see Regulating Wall Street by Acharya, et al., a nice solid introduction). I teach law but had not walked through a recent end-to-end blow-by-blow of the "sausage-making" of federal legislation. I guess I wanted more legal substance here, in terms of who wrote what and why, but (though some fair amount of that is here) this is quintessentially not about the financial/theoretical complexities (vis a vis legislating) so much as it is (as advertised) a book at the Congress member-to-member and house-to-house level, and gives a cogent view of that world, and how things get done. So, it did fulfill my expectations. I wouldn't call it great storytelling, but it has a workmanlike tone, detail and pace of events. This is a good opportunity to express my admiration and gratitude for the staffers who do so much work. As with many businesses, we tend to mostly see the figureheads, but the importance of the staffers (who are, in Congress, undercompensated by any measure of the modern financial world they are affecting) is on display here. Also, we get to see some congress members' personalities as waffling around, making friendly assurances and then being nudged in other directions by key staffers, with their message wandering around. There are many different levels of intelligence and ability on display here.

Recommend the book if you are a political "junkie". Act of Congress—the newest book from longtime Washington Post reporter and editor Robert G. Kaiser—it's an attempt to explain this contradiction: How can the most productive Congress since the 1970s also stand as the most dysfunctional in more than a century? His case study is the successful two-year effort to pass financial reform and deal with the regulatory aftermath of the economic crisis.

This author takes a particular situation and weaves into the story a real description of the workings of Congress. A lot of it I knew, but this author tells it like it is. For many readers it will be shocking. For cynics who think it is even worse, they will be disappointed in this. But if things are to get done in politics, a perfectionist is not being realistic. Deals have to be made. Factions need to be catered to. To get things done pragmatists are required. Barney Frank, about whom most of this book is about, was a pragmatist. Idealists, who won't compromise, have no business in Congress. This book shows how a pragmatist got something done. What was done is not perfect, but is a good deal better than nothing.

Long-time Washington reporter Kaiser has reported a dismal story of dysfunctional Congress, rife with partisan aggression, filled with campaign-fund raisers, empty of policy makers and virtual blank slates regarding the laws it passes. Any informed citizen is vaguely aware of this, but Kaiser's detailed reporting of the passage of the Dodd-Frank finance bill brings these problems together to show us what a true horror story Congress is right now. I would have preferred more focus on the substance of the legislation, and the book has a few earmarks of a newspaper reporter's difficulty with sustained narrative, but these are quibbles. It's a cliche, but true: every American citizen needs to know the ills of our legislative branch and how extraordinarily complex any solution is.

I read lots of reviews for touch and feel books before I purchased any. Of all the ones I bought, I am most pleased with this one. The size of the textured patches where my 7 month old can touch/feel is excellent. The size of the book itself is perfect, too. Most of all, the variety of textures in this book is what makes it stand out from the others. Unlike so many other touch and feel books, this one has more than just "soft fur." It has sticky frog toes, bumpy lizard skin, and a smooth dolphin skin! I am very happy with this purchase!

This is the second book of this series that I've bought for my daughter (we also have the farm one which we love too). Here's why we love this book:-each page has a different texture (hairy, bumpy, sticky, etc). There's a fun variety some other touch and feel books will only feature one texture just in different colors. Also the textures are a good size-it has fun bold contrasting colors-theres no clutter in the pictures... Just highlights the featured animal-each page talks about the animal... It's not just a label or animal sound but actually gives an animal fact.My 9 month old loves this book. We read the front to back and then go through it again and talk about the colors of each animal and the sounds it makes. It's an awesome touch and feel book!

Ian Malcolm: I’ll tell you the problem with the scientific power that you’re using here: it didn’t require any discipline to attain it. You read what others had done and you took the next step. You didn’t earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don’t take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could and before you even knew what you had you patented it and packaged it and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now you’re selling it, you want to sell it.Let's be clear...this was not written by JK...this is based on her series. And that becomes terribly clear very early on. Additionally, the number of names that are dropped is astronomical! Anyone worth knowing in the Potterverse is up front and counted. As in main character. The story, the plotline...it meanders all over the place that the reader wonders if the writers had a clue to start with or if it was just to "stand on the shoulders of geniuses." There was no way this was going to fail...none. The generation that grew up reading Harry's stories are now buying their own books and financing their own plays. Their imagination was set free with JK's works and personally I think that was one of her greatest gifts...engaging our imagination. This reads like fan fiction, poorly written fan fiction and not even with any good ships!Your writers were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.Don't do it. Keep Harry, Ron, Hermione, McGonagall, Ginny alive in your memories instead.

Let me start by saying this, I love harry potter. I read the books 2-3 times per year since I was a child. I've grown up with these books. These books are a part of me, I've named my children after characters in these books. I have 3 tattoos, all of which are harry potter. I'm a dedicated fan, entirely obsessed to be candid. I have waited for this book like the rest of you.I can handle the fact that it's written as a play, I was expecting this. I was fully prepared to accept this. I waited all night for this to be released to my kindle (it's 3 a.m and I've just finished). I sped through the cursed child and my final thought was, this was disappointing .I'm skeptical of how much jk rowling actually contributed to this. I get more of a harry potter vibe from the fantastic beasts trailer than this entire book. The plot was bad, almost everything was bad. It was like a poorly written fanfic.It sucks that I'm saying this because harry potter is a part of soul. I went into this thinking it was everything I'd ever hoped for.I'm not saying don't buy the book, by all means buy it. Read it. See for yourself. I'm not being cynical, rowling is the queen of my world. This is the first and likely only bad review I will give regarding her.Just be warned, this does not feel like harry potter. This was not intricate, well excuted, thought out, or clever. The characters were not true to themselves. I think the best way to go into reading this and saving yourself from despair is to read it as a fanfic and not the true works of rowling. It would be tolerable had her name not been involved, I expected so much more.And now I will try to purge this book from my memory and continue to live in her past works of art. I still have big hopes for fantastic beasts and that's enough for now.

Spoilers!!Huge Harry Potter fan-- 16 years of reading!! So I was incredibly excited for the new one. I keep wondering if there's a therapy group where all the disgruntled fans can congragate and weep together. I'm also refusing to consider in cannon as it was not JKR herself who penned. What they did to the INTEGRITY of these characters. I'm sick over it. The entire 7 book series was about friendship, love and loyalty, and Harry knew that; and most importantly, knew that's what made him different from V. You're telling me, he, Ron and Herm didn't continue to live and instil those values in their children? Rose was a bully, who was prejudice against someone without knowing them first. Harry would never said he wished his kid wasn't his, or sacrificed his kid's only friendship over gosip. Harry wouldn't have choosen work over time with his family, which after all he'd been through WAS ALL HE EVER WANTED.If someone were to ask me, what is your favorite thing about Harry Potter?, I would hands down reply: Harry Potter's moral integrity, that is the heart of the series. It's his choosing to sacrifice himself for what is good. It's choosing friendship over suspicion. It's a defiant effort to turn towards the pain of loving and losing, then choosing not to love at all. It's choosing to do what right, and best for others even when it hurts, is inconvenient, or scary. It's fighting for truth and justice, even when you're the only one doing it. And when you move away from those central themes, the integrity of who we know Harry (and friends) to have PROVEN himself to be, you destroy Harry Potter and all that he stood for for 7 books. This new book is the worst kind of trash, the one that destroys the soul of our hero.Also, what they did to calm, measured, quirky, wise Dumbledore, making him a weepy, rude mess, who spoke in cliches, issuing a completely unnecessary "apology" to why Harry was at the Dursleys, when Dumbledore had already apologized profusely for that in HP5 AND severely told off the Dursleys in HP6 for their abusive behavior! It was just phony emotional porn! And Ron's a proper idiot who got drunk during his wedding?! He would have never disrespected Hermione like that. Hermione was neither clever, nor charming; she didn't come up with hardly any solutions. And what a weak, floppy mess Harry was during the fight scene?! His 16 year old self could have fought better. It's like they sucked the soul out of the books, like a dementor wrote it!! This is not even pointing out the horrible plot holes! No, I refuse this book is real. It's a bloody mess!

I bought the TeXbook two years ago, but finally spent a few days reading it cover to cover -- and I am impressed. As many others, I started exploring plain TeX because I wanted more from LaTeX. I was surprised to find how simple and, yes, *elegant* TeX is in comparison. I guess TeX is to LaTeX as C is to C++. Certainly do not buy this book if you just want to use LaTeX!The writing is superb, full of fine detail and more than a few clever jokes. Why can't recent books about modern systems be so delightful? Maybe David Pogue's Missing Manual series comes close, but the topics are not quite as technical.As a reference, the TeXbook is weak because each command or concept is scattered across so many places: one introductory chapter, one summary chapter, in exercises, in "dangerous bend" passages, and so on. I believe the book is best organized for front to back reading, although probably in two or three passes if you include the dangerous bends. For reference, I prefer TeX by Topic by Victor Eijkhout. It is out of print, but available for download on his web site.The paperback edition of the TeXbook is spiral bound. I appreciate that it lays flat, but the back pages are always falling out of the binding!

The book is great for learning TeX---but are you using TeX now? Chances are (if you're reading this), you're a LaTeX user. My sole objection to giving this five stars is its age (no offense intended): with the current standards, some of its suggestions and pointers no longer apply.I readily stand by my four star rating: it teaches the reader about primitives, units, etc. However, one may ask "Who starts a new page with \vfill\eject when \newpage is way to go now?" However, if you want to know the answer to the follow-up question "Why is \newpage the way to go now?", then this book is for you. This is not for someone looking to learn how to typeset in LaTeX (as of this writing, the current standard). It is intended for someone who wants a better understanding of the foundations of LaTeX.

Don Knuth has a reputation for being a perfectionist, and after you read The TeXBook, you will see why. Every chapter is filled with examples and reasons why certain things are done a certain way in TeX. This is the second edition of a book that I originally found in medical school, which I've read through a couple times and found very useful. The revised edition is significantly expanded compared the original, with almost a complete rewrite of the content. There are 365 unique, short chapters focusing on "common errors" in the management of emergent conditions -- I liked this book a lot because of the focus on high risk diagnoses or chief complaints in the error-prone, high decision density environment of the ED. While many of the topics are things that will be familiar to most clinicians, it never hurts to be reminded of an approach to troubleshooting post-intubation hypotension, or of the risk for abdominal compartment syndrome (though not typically an ED diagnosis) alongside instructions for how to measure abdominal compartment pressure. There are sections on things like cardiology, e.g. "Know the Mimics of Ventricular Tachycardia" and also critical care, with a great chapter on "How to Care for the ICU Boarder in Your ED" by none other than Josh Farkas who writes the PulmCrit blog I like so much. There are sections on upcommon presentations and pitfalls therein, such as "Normal Diagnostic Studies Do Not Rule Out Shunt Malfunction" and more medico-legal focused (clinical medicine is the overarching focus of the book, but I found this helpful) and clinical practice ares such as crowding, consultant communication / documentation and how to handle a deposition request. All in all, very readable, brief chapters that you could very easily read one of every day and learn something new, and well-written by authors respected in their fields. A bargain, and comes with an eBook that you can use as a reference on shift.

I got tired of books that discuss conditions in broad superficial ways like most Medicine books.This is a very portable book teeming with precious up to date advice that covers more Medicine than any other. Very informative. It is supposed to be a daily read as opposed to a cram type of read. Written by the SMEs of EM. Full of pearls. I recommend this book to those who have been in EM for at least 1 year. Otherwise, the information may be irrelevant or difficult to follow.

I appreciate the format of this book, with each chapter titled with the emergency medicine problem that has been the frequent cause of bad outcomes. Dense book, tons of info, yet to the point. I'm a FNP working in urgent care. In this setting there exists a temptation to clear pts without the appropriate work up. I am a huge fan of emergency bounce backs, and like that book, this one assists me in maintaining a high index of suspicion for the big baddies.

Great tidbits of information and each section is maybe 2-3 pages long. The sections do not overload you with information, they just tell you the facts. This book is great for new physicians/PAs/NPs working in the emergency department!

Each topic is covered in 2-4 pages to it's not an overwhelming tome. A good read with useful info if you work in ER or related area.

Great book. Concise and easily digestible chapters. Easy to read a few after a shift, then hit the hay.

The product showed up beaten up and wrinkled in multiple places. Very disappointed. I paid full price for this book and it was supposed to be a gift, but the cover was wrinkled and folded in multiple places, so I couldn't give it as a gift.
