Unimpressive. I had to use this for a class, or I wouldn't have spent the money. The exterior looks like a magazine or journal, making the casual observer think that the content is similarly up-to-date. For example, the chapter on data spends a couple pages vaguely describing the benefits a business may derive from relational database technology, such as scalability and performance, and gives an example of a website that received, on average, 7 million hits per day in its first year of operation. Admittedly, this is a business-oriented text, so my expectations for technical details were already low. But there was no similar discussion, not even a paragraph, of non-relational database technology, which is by no means new, but is used on sites doing more traffic per hour as the listed example got in a day. Facebook, SalesForce.com, eBay, Google, etc. -- why not spend a page talking about the information technology they find vital. Worse, the listed source for this information was the homepage of a news & commentary website, and a search on that site turned up nothing related to the claims made in the text.Another frustration is that the author's unjustified biases sit alongside actual information with no clear distinction. The discussion of the systems development lifecycle explains the waterfall methodology in depth, closing with "[it] no longer serves as an adequate systems development methodology in most cases" and touts agile methodology as an alternative. But then the text sweeps through RAD, XP, RUP, and scrum with no case studies or examples showing actual improvement, and fails entirely to mention problems that organizations have had either during the transition to agile methods or after some time using them. Clearly this is not an objective presentation, but will the business-oriented students who go on to become MIS managers realize this without having had the chance to experience the pitfalls and triumphs of both sorts of methodologies on their own? It would be great if the textbook for a information technology management course could spare them from having to learn by experience, but this will not be that textbook. In short, plenty of good information is available in this text, but for a balanced perspective, seek elsewhere.

I got an A in the class that required this textbook, but only because I seriously went the extra mile in my studying. This book was a tedious read because every chapter is only 20-25 pages long, but every chapter also introduced 50-80 vocab words. By the end of the book, it had introduced about 700+ vocab words, some of them so briefly that they were explained with one sentence and then never again mentioned. The other issue is that there aren't any vocab lists at the end of the chapter so you have to carefully go through each page if you're trying to make a vocab list to review with. There were also many vocab terms in the book that didn't have a definition in the glossary and several typos throughout the book. I also used McGH connect with this book and that was also tedious. 100-120 review problems for each chapter and this still didn't seem to help you learn the terminology because there was so much vocab that most of the terms were still only reviewed with one question.

E-Book was exactly what I needed for my CIS course, it was accessible on all of my devices and the tools in kindle really allow you to take incredible notes and make flash cards! Ctrl+F is useable in it, very helpful. Also, the book itself is a great read, I learned a lot!

It never ceases to amaze me the price for college textbooks. This book only has about 250 pages and it costs over $50.00! Really! As for the content, it works with my class and was required reading. This book looks like a large magazine. Even the pages are magazine weight and type. At first I thought I ordered the wrong book because it doesn't look like the typical textbook.

Required text for an IS class. Pretty light read for a text book though. Almost like a trade magazine.

Creates a firm foundation for business systems.

If only it would have had the access code that I needed for my class. Sadly I will have to return it. Best to buy this book somewhere else if you need an access code.

This book is limited to 2 devices, about which I didn't find out until my downloads to my ipad were blocked!Amazon tech support could see the 2 device settings, but I didn't find it in the product description. grrr

I am writing this with my five year old granddaughter, who loves this book and is so excited to write her first review. She loves the part where Mrs. Primm, the mother, opens the bathroom door and discovers Lyle. We live in NYC, near houses that look just like Lyle's. So we went over to look at the houses and pretended we heard Lyle. We love this book so much that we plan to read other Lyle books. Yay!

It is empty now, but it won't be for long.... So begins this wonderful book which is a wonderful introduction to the Lyle, Lyle Crocodile Universe. In this book, Mr. and Mrs. Primm and their son, Joshua move into a new apartment on E. 88th Street in NYC. While they are unloading their belongings, they hear sounds that go SWISH! SWASH! SPLASH! SWOOSH! They wonder what it is, and when Mrs. Primm goes to the bathroom to wash her hands before lunch. She spots a crocodile in the tub! She points it out to her husband. They go to call 911 just to find out that the line isn't connected yet. Fortunately a young actor delivers them a note telling them that the crocodile is friendly, but that the only food he'll eat is Turkish Caviar. Whatever will they do with him? Find out now for yourself.

I love this story and intend on buying all of the books in the series! A bit too involved forMy four year old but i love it!

One of my favorite books as a child, and now I get to share it with my son.

grandkids like it

Wonderful story, loved the drawings, did not know this book or author before. Good surprise

A classic. My 3 & 5 yr old grandsons loved it.

The publication date says 1973 but it was written during the 1940s or 50's I would say. Not too many homes still had hand-me down Victorian furniture in 1973! ha! I received this book myself when I was in early elementary school (1964-1965) and loved it. I will now go on the search around the house for it to pass onto my granddaughter. Lyle will bring a smile to anyone's face and kids will love the idea of having a pet crocodile in the bathtub!

Do not buy this book unless you are willing to speed up your development processes, save thousands of dollars, improve your product, and in general, it will flip your thinking. (sounds like a commercial?) -- Seriously, the cost of the book is cheap considering the amount of $ "waste" I've found in my company -- the danger lies in lean thinking and that people are afraid to change, stuck in the rut of waterfall / V processes. How much does it cost to initiate a change request (for a feature that wasn't quite developed like you wanted)? Meetings, status reports, follow up, retest....What if it could have been done right from the very beginning? I highly recommend it..

A powerful, clear, and really practical guide to bring current product development methodologies to the state of the art.The authors' range and depth of experiences and insights is amazing.

My first lean book so I cant compare with others. But I find this book very very good and different from the usual consultant books where most of ideas are on the back cover. Here it is packed with great ideas and concepts. And still very fluid to read. On top of that the physical quality of the book is outstanding. I would highly recommend it.

This book (especially the second edition) provides a comprehensive and actionable overview of Lean Product Development. The provided theory with simple illustrations can be applied directly. Especially the focus on fundamentally understanding how the product works, and on management that really understands both the development process and the products, are inspiring.

This is THE pioneer's book. It's a must have!

Very insightful, and clear, practical ways to try these ideas out. You will learn by doing.

Best book.

This basically is a book chronicling one person's journey to becoming musical at an advanced age. It is a very interesting read, and spends a lot of ink describing some of the science of the brain's processing sound and related topics. It touches on some other things like the history of music, but mostly not in a very deep way. It was meant to be a fairly short and quick read. It was interesting and informative, but it definitely does not teach you how to play a guitar. What it is, to me, is motivation. This book records one man's journey toward becoming a good guitarist and his thoughts and reflections along the way. It has many interesting bits of information about various musicians peppered throughout the book that did add quite a bit of interest.

The author shares a lot of interesting information about learning music. The science behind it. His personal journey. Stories of other musicians experiences with learning guitar. Guitar teachers, etc. However, about halfway through, I became quite bored. Unfortunately, a lot of the chapters read like filler. Too esoteric to keep me interested. For example, his experience at guitar camp was very fun to read! I would have enjoyed reading more cool anecdotes like this, and fewer about brain synapses and singing. If you enjoy the science behind learning an instrument, then you may enjoy this book

When I first saw this book on Amazon, I was hesitant to buy it because it only had 3 1/2 stars. (Most books I read are 4+)I dug deeper into the reviews to see that people expected something different. I decided to give it a shot anyway. And, after purchasing and reading the book, the description seem to match the product. The story is arched around Dr. Marcus's journey to learn guitar at an advanced age, 38. He discusses the benefit as well as the disadvantages of music learning later in life and how it effected his quest to learn to play guitar.I enjoyed the studies and theories that were shared. I will be looking for more books like this that mix psychology, learning methods, and music. Well done.

I picked up the guitar at the age of 40… I questioned if I'd be able to learn it or not and I basically told myself that I'd have to stick with it for a year before giving up. I bought a guitar and put in that year and at the end it started to sound like something and I've kept with it and it's been rewarding… But it raised that question in me of, can I do this and how difficult is it going to be….So, I stumbled on this book about five years later and the author went through the same type of experience but he questioned deeper and from a lot of other angles. Not only was he going to give it a go at learning guitar but he was going to study the how and why if it was really possible to teach an old dog new tricks. (I'd read glad wells outliers, so was familiar with the 10,000 hour concept and that whole line of questioning, but this guy was asking about it for older folks and how much was possible once you weren't a kid anymore) I thought it would be an interesting read. So, the author starts on this journey and takes you along for the ride. He talks about going to guitar camp, interviewing musicians, his learning style and how he progresses, what works and what doesn't…. He ends up in a band at camp with kids and they go after some basic song writing and performance goals and what that dynamic is like… I found the book really interesting because I'd been through some of what he'd experienced and also in trying to answer the questions of how to get better at something, which is something anyone can apply to anything they dare to learn.

A charming story by a neuroscientist who gives a blow by blow of his midlife attempt to become a guitarist from scratch. The story is interspersed with mini-lectures on music history, music theory, music education, and (most thoroughly) music and the brain. It proceeds with a light touch, but covers some heavy material. Not everything is at the level that a professional musicologist would like (especially the quick overview of 1000 years of music history), but almost everyone will learn something.

Nice memoir. In the end, the answer is yes, you can learn a new instrument as an adult, however, having a sabbatical of a year or more (as the author does) in which to learn, practice and jam with experts greatly increases your likelihood of success.

I enjoy this book very much. I can relate to what the author went through because I picked up a guitar later in life, at age 20, after always being told that I wasn't musical and that I was tone deaf. I went through many of the same things that the author went through. I really cracked up when he talked about the difficulty of learning the F chord, and being confused by the duplication of notes on the guitar neck. (I went through all of that too). Currently I get paid money to play music, and I have recorded two CDs of my own material. If "Guitar Zero" had been available when I started my journey years ago it would have saved me a lot of time and headaches. I would recommend it to any beginner who needs to find the shortcuts. One area Marcus delves into is an area that I never thought about; the part of our brain that we use when playing music, and the fact that there really is no "musical" part of the brain. It's not something we need to know to be a good guitar player, but it's interesting.

I got this book because I’m a 60 yr-old trying to teach myself bass guitar. I was hoping for more detail and strategies for older people learning a new instrument but found mostly info on the author’s relationships and about studies on learning. Still, it’s worth a read.
