I just finished book 5 (Arch Enemy) in this series and reviewed it, and realized I needed to jump in a time machine and come back to review book one as my note to readers interested in picking up the first volume.Yes, this book (and the series it spawns) is similar to the Mitch/Digger/Scot/Jericho/Pike books out there in that it features over-the-top good guys running around beating up on over-the-top bad guys in exciting, page-turning ways. What is different in this series is that Maloney forgoes the "tortured soul" single-person bad-azz shooter in favor of some very interesting, multi-player character development.His larger plot arcs are fun, interesting, and genre-appropriate. The plot points and devices used to move along those arcs, however, are at the very top of disbelief. Maloney frequently employs deus ex machina and extremely improbable plotting to move the characters from point "A" to point "B." These insane events happen so often that I almost wonder if they aren't used as an inside joke to fans. Something along the lines of "Bad guy have a gun to your head? Already pulled the trigger? Don't worry! Call 1-800-Plot-Fix NOW and we'll send you a sniper's bullet to knock the barrel away before the bullet can exit the barrel! Operators are standing by!" Of course, the narrow escape happens in all books of this genre, but Maloney tends to have a knack for taking it to the extreme. Like I said, I wonder if he does it as an aside to his fans.That said, the reader can afford to have some fun rolling their eyes at the various last-second contrivances used to advance the plot, because Maloney is so damned good at character development and interaction. It's not just the main protagonist we get to know in this book/series, but his partner, his daughter, his boss, and many others. Whatever Maloney lacks in the art of semi-realistic last-minute escapes, he more than makes up for in developing his characters and allowing them to interact. He is exceptional at switching first-person perspectives from character to character, and you, the reader, are treated to experiencing many personalities as they view the same plot arc from different and very realistic perspectives.This is Maloney's strong suit - what sets him apart and what sets this series apart. His characters are so strong that I am more than able to overlook the plot devices - even consider them part of the "fun" of the read - because I am paid in very good, very strong introspection and interaction. The characters "do" some really silly things, but they act, think, feel, and interact in very real, very well-considered ways.Why five stars if I complain about the plot contrivances? Because I'm not complaining about them - merely pointing them out. Maloney is good enough with the arc and good enough with the characters that I can roll my eyes all I want and still feel like I got a highly enjoyable read. You WILL roll your eyes, but if you will also wipe them a few times. That's why I keep wondering if it's intentional - if Maloney is intentionally going over-the-top to get your guard down so the serious, real parts hit you harder.Within the limits of the genre (this is light reading, after all), Maloney is highly adept at putting you in the brain-space of different people. For me, that was enough to keep a 5-star rating despite some pretty intense eye-rolling deus ex machina moments. I poke my fun because readers of reviews should know and understand what they're getting, but I remain an avid fan of Maloney and this series, have gladly purchased all five books thus far, and will be near first in line for the sixth pre-order.

I suppose if you want to read about a hero with major flaws this could be for you. Morgan runs blindly into situations without a thought in his head. He was supposed to be an accomplished assassin but apparently Maloney doesn't know what that means or Morgan was a real has been and forgot everything he knew that made him useful to the CIA when he was younger.The character development is terribly weak. Morgan's grown daughter wants a better relationship with her Dad so Morgan promises to take her to a sports event in a day or so. He than runs of to Afghanistan for a few days and than returns to the US to run around the country for a few more days and never is the missed sports event mentioned until weeks later. Probably a nice development to flesh out the characters but it than lies ignored for chapters and chapters.I suppose it beats doing taxes or reading the paper, but only just a little bit better.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through this book and honestly, it's really dragging. I used to read to get to sleep. Then I discovered authors like Mark Dawson and series like the Grey Man books. Suddenly I found myself unable to go to sleep, I'd literally read all night. Leo J Maloney has brought me back to the point where I struggle to end a chapter before nodding off.I guess my question is, does this series get any better after this, clearly, difficult first book? If they all follow the same pace with the same bungling and inept protagonist, I just don't think it's worth wasting any more cash on. Oh, yeah, for the record, I agree with every reviewer who says that Maloney's bio is BS. I personally know of a former telephone sales guy who created a far more convincing covert operative character in his very first self-published novel.

The novel is fast paced with plenty of action. Power players in Washington calling the plays with black operating players on both sides of the action. Dan Morgan rises to the occasion with his partner, Cougar. A few rough edges with the chapters providing retroactive context. All in all, a story that will make readers to seek more of Cougar.Bjgraney@charter.net

Took a moment to get into this one, but it was well worth the time it took to get through the details necessary to build a good series. I'm looking forward to reading book two. Maloney writes a fast-paced story with a great plot line, and he brought his story to a satisfactory close, no loose ends.

Termination Orders was a terrific thriller! I really enjoyed the way the writer interspersed the present with flashbacks designed to give the characters depth and backstory.Good plot, lots of action, plenty of plot twists and surprises I would definitely recommend this book. Add to all of that the fact that you don't find out who the actual bad guy is until near the end of the book and you have a recipe for a very good way to spend a weekend!

Waste of my time reading this pulp. The chapter on Morgan's basic military training, recruitment and year on "The Farm" was laughable it was so full of errors and holes. The story went downhill from there. I would hazard a guess and say the author is a phony - he couldn't have actually had any real experience as an operative and write such crap. I won't read any more of his drivel.

I found this book via Bookhub and got it on kindle. I could not stop reading. Very good story of a man retired from black ops with a wife and daughter. He gets pulled out of retirement to assist his old boss at CIA. One thing leads to another and... I won't spoil it for you.If you like Brad Thor, Tom Clancy, Mich Rapp, you will enjoy this. I can't wait to read the second book in this series.My new favorite author!

Kindle version: images are too small.This is particularly bad for special chars and formulas which are rendered as images as they appear about as large as the punctuation.Normal diagrams are also small and must be viewed with the zoom function.Apologies for rating the book based on formatting, but there's no other apparent way to contact the publisher.Once the issues are resolved I will fix the rating to fix the "outlier" it has created.

Supervised machine learning only. Basically a bunch of applications for an undergrad CS class. Light on theory. Very well structured though and excellent if you want to see some applications of machine learning in action. For deeper treatment see coursera courses by Geoff Hinton of Toronto and the Stanford ML class.

I have already used machine algorithms in production with Spark and Python, but I wanted to have a better understanding of how the algorithms work and more importantly what the variations, strengths/weaknesses, and trade-offs are for each algorithm. This book was exactly what I've been looking for.The authors explain the algorithms fluidly without any reference to specific programming libraries or languages. They introduce the concepts very well before moving into the specifics of the logic and math behind the algorithms. Following a thorough explanation of how the algorithm works, the authors then describe variants and pitfalls based on their prior foundation.So, if you aren't a math major but would like to understand the concepts and details of how ML works along with practical knowledge of variants, parameter tuning, and trade-offs, then this book should be exactly what you need.Finally, the algorithms covered are the most commonly used in ML. AI isn't covered. Look at the Table of Contents to see which algorithms are explained.

Machine Learning is brilliantly explained in this outstanding book. You will learn the subject a lot better than in many other books in the market. The only downside of this book is the lack of examples with programming code, especially in Python. I strongly urge the authors to do so in a next edition. A lot in the area is learned by doing, by using good software development practices.

Great introductory book to this field. I would highly recommend this for computer scientists or other engineers looking to get an understanding of this field. I have read a number of books that are too heavy with theory and some that are a bit on the skimpy side and leave out details that are important for a true practical implementation. This has just the right mix.

Overall, the book is well written - plenty of examples and good approaches towards data preparation, analysis, and applied ML.

This book makes memorizing drugs very easy by taking a system-by-system approach and providing the reader with memorization techniques for each drug. Guerra also has an elaborate understanding of the roots an stems of each drug class and how the drug names are created. The explanation of the origin of the drug names and the roots that they have in common have been very helpful to me when learning these drugs. With the help of Guerra's books I was able to memorize 100 drugs in about 6 hours, which I would not have thought possible at the beginning of the semester.

Amazing concept of teaching. This book puts the pharmacology of medicine into a realistic perspective. This will definitely help me with my refresher.

this book is good but as a 2nd year medical student this book is not detailed enough

I'm a nursing student who has been having a hard time memorizing pharmacology, i just started reading the book and i love it so far! It is so easy to understand and really retain all of the information i am taking in. Amazing!

This book helps a lot with understanding how to categorize drugs in your mind to make memorizing them easier. The book made a lot more sense when paired with the author's youtube videos. The explanations after each drug are like little hints on how to memorize the drug which is helpful, but can sometimes be confusing. This is not a book to read if you want to really understand the facts and background about a specific drug, but it was not written to be either. So can't complain about that.

The only thing that was deterring me from taking my ptce was learning the "dreaded" pharmacology terms..with this book I feel I am confident and ready to take the exam, knowing that I can not only name the top 200 drug's generic and trade name, but also know their mechanism of action. Mr Guerrera thanks so much!!

I feel that this book helped to break down all the different types of drugs in an easy-to-read fashion. As a nursing student, it is largely beneficial to be able to know the "drug group" from the drug name, because you are then able to make connections to what it does. I enjoyed reading this book and that it is full of tips to help memorize generic and trade names!

I really enjoy using this book because it is so well organized. I find the the spacial organization of the book helps me remember the drug names best because that is how I learn best. Because of the way this material is laid out in this textbook, I know I will remember these drugs more easily and make fewer medication errors. Thus my patients will benefit and they will heal in a safer environment.

I'm an astrophysicist and I look through children's astronomy books frequently. There are a couple things I look for to determine whether it has enough of the 'right' information, stuff that is just crazy cool and interesting. This book has them all!! Volcanoes made out of ice and erupt liquid water, methane clouds/rain and rivers, incredible pressure and acidity on Venus, it is seriously the best book on the subject that I have seen. Great pictures, diagrams and timelines. Easy to read and understand and some incredibly mind blowing stuff. I love it!

I purchased this book for my niece along with a telescope for Christmas. She is 7 years old. She specifically called me to tell me that she "LOVES" the book. That is not something you hear from 7 year olds so I was extremely pleased. My sister tells me that my niece only needs help with a few words but wont put the book down and has been reading it constantly since Christmas (three days ago). its been snowing so no telescope set up yet, but my niece even read some of the book to me and I couldn't have been happier. I purchased this book because the pictures where outstanding and I wanted something that was visually pleasing as well as educational for my niece. I will be purchasing several other Smithsonian books like this for her. Outstanding book - worth every penny.

Got this as a birthday gift for my daughter who loves space. The book is a little advanced for her (she turned six), however it is written in a way she can understand the majority of the information. While she is a gifted reader it's not something that she would read to herself for more than a few minutes because of the large amount and range of information. However it has proved a good book to read at bedtime and will prove to be worth reading for many years to come yet. Overall great book.

My four-year-old son and I read this book together every night at bedtime. It's been every night for... two months! He can recite the sections: The Solar System, Galaxies, Exploring Space, Stars, and The Night Sky. And Reference.Beautiful pictures. Easy-to-find labels. Up-to-date information.

Bought this because my family enjoyed the "knowledge" encyclopedia so much. My 11 year old daughter and 10 year old son loved it. Great graphics, accurate facts, not too overwhelming, fun to read. Explores a lot outside of our solar system too, which is good because often these books focus on just our system. Construction is good and it has held up pretty well for being heavily used. This book has been picked up weekly by at least one of my kids or their friends and read for hours on end.

This was a Christmas gift for my great nephew who plans on working for NASA . He never put it down once he unwrapped. The content was amazing, the pictures were top quality. I enjoyed looking at this book myself. A great learning tool. His parents said it was the perfect gift for him. I would recommend all of the Smithsonian books to everyone.

Our 8 year old LOVES this book! And so do we adults! It is filled with fascinating illustrations and information the whole family will enjoy. This one does NOT Disappoint! Well worth more than the price. Highly recommended!!

Beautiful book! We got this book from the library, and loved it so much ordered a copy to keep. The photos are stunning. The layout of the book is well done. My children spend hours reading this book, and learn something new each time!
