The 3 hours 1 minute version is abridged. It is okay, it has Douglas Adams' real voice and he reads it extremely well. The only reason I give it only four stars is that there is a 6 hour 40 minute version that is available on CD somewhere. I know this because I borrowed the CDs from Phoenix Public Library and I have listened to it twice through as well as reading the text twice through. I have also listened to part of the abridged version and the reading seems .. different. I think the abridged version is not simply edited down from the long version, but it actually has a different script, with a few words changed here and there and adams' voice sounds more distracted in the abridged version, more present in the long version. It appears the long version has been sold at this link in the past: Dirk GentlyThis is a complicated novel, and to be able to understand it you really need to read it twice, or listen to it twice (or more) and I also needed to read a few blogs to really get it. It's a puzzle. Yes, you can solve the puzzle from the abridged version, but it will be more fun to have all the details.There is also a version with several actors reading for BBC radio, that I tried and didn't like. DGHDA was followed by The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul, and that would have been followed by The Salmon of Doubt—though the manuscript was released in its incomplete form along with other random works in a collection by the same name—as publishers are want to make their cash cows rage after the dying of the light.Adams is most famous for the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy [H2G2] series. DGHDA shares the British absurdist humor of H2G2, but is a more genre-bending a work. While H2G2 crosses humor and sci-fi, DGHDA takes those two genres and throws detective and supernatural fiction into the works. The book was billed by the author as a “detective-ghost-horror-who dunnit-time travel-romantic-musical-comedy-epic.” Of these, “horror” is dubious given the fundamental silliness, “epic” is a little grandiose for a work of 300 pages, and the “romantic” and “musical” parts are rather thin.The title refers to a detective agency owned by Dirk Gently, who believes in the fundamental interconnectedness of all things and is a bit of a con man. Gently is the lead character in a comedic sense, but his straight man--Richard MacDuff--has at least equal claim to being the book’s overall lead. (Just as straight man Arthur Dent leads in the H2G2 books.) Gently gets involve when he discovers Richard engaged in the inexplicable activity of breaking into the window of his (Richard’s) girlfriend’s apartment—a girlfriend with which he has a favorable relationship. This convinces Gently that Richard has either been hypnotized or possessed, either of which makes him a prime customer of Gently’s agency.The mystery part of the novel revolves around the new owner and editor of a magazine—Gordon Way--who dies, and whose ghost continues to be active in story (even having PoV chapters in this shifting PoV novel.) Richard comes to believe he’s a suspect, although the bungling former editor of the magazine—Michael Wenton-Weakes--is the lead suspect. Of course, the fact that the deceased is the father of Richard’s girlfriend, Susan Way, does encourage the notion that Richard could be involved. Of course, it wouldn’t be much of a who-dun-it if it was a straightforward case of one of these men with motives having done it.As would be expected of a book by Douglas Adams, it has its moments of hilarity, but it wasn’t as funny as the best of the H2G2 books. The best absurdist device introduced into the book is the Electronic Monk. In an era in which no one has time for believing in things, one can purchase or rent a robot to believe things for one—particularly those outlandish notions that are unsupported by evidence and thus are least worthy of the effort of belief.The main characters are all sufficiently quirky to be memorable, likable, or both. The characters are one of the strengths of this book. The story is a bit disheveled, probably purposefully so, but it doesn’t make for the easiest work to follow--particularly early in the story when one hasn’t yet got a firm grasp of who’s who and who’s doing what. That said, it’s a decent enough plot, all things considered.I’d recommend this for those who like humorous speculative fiction.

Douglas Adams is a great, entertaining writer who brings odd to the forefront. His books often involve normal people being placed in strange, abnormal situations with quirky characters. If you're a BBC watcher, don't worry, this is nothing like the show. We still get the paranormal and Gently's odd approach to detecting, but there's plenty of differences so it doesn't feel like a repeat.There's a charming, very old professor, a slightly confused ghost, your average computer programmer, and then Dirk himself. There are bits that are slow, especially the parts about computers, but skim those areas and keep on. You'll love this entertaining, unique ride.

There is nothing, or mostly nothing, that can't be seen again after a considerable passage of time as if seen for the first time. It's not that it's startlingly new,because there's the lingering image from the first encounter,although faint and growing fainter by the day. The fainting image forms a weak template so that the reader.or at least this reader, has an interesting experience such as "funny, I didn't notice that before" or "so that's how it worked" to "nah, not this time." So you keep reading and wondering if you'll finish these books before more are published only to realize that the only time machine outside your mind that would allow you to think about Adams's future is in Reg's rooms at Cambridge and it broke at the same time as British Telecom fixed the phone.

Look, it's Douglas Adams. Douglas....Freaking....Adams. That's all you need to know about this book series. Dirk Gently takes a moment to get truly into the plot of the thing, as it is quite twisty, turny, topsy, turvey. Much more than the excellent show that was based on the books. Matt Taibbi wrote a number of great articles for Rolling Stone Magazine about the corruption of Goldman Sachs, and the corrosive nature of the Wall Street cabal on the world economy shortly after the 2008 Global Economic collapse. Mr. Taibbi was the person who characterized GS as a "Vampire Squid". Making a mockery of former GS CEO Lloyd Blankfein's claim that Wall Street was "doing God's work". Yes, he had the audacity to say that very thing. It speaks volumes about these heartless beasts who plunder and pillage our financial systemFast forward to 2014. I had been closely following all the developments in the post-collapse economic arena and opened the NY Times one morning to read the story about Ms. Segarra and her attempts to confront her bosses about the obvious conflicts of interest GS had engaged in during one of their dealings that she was charged with overseeing. All supported by secret tape recordings that were beyond damning.However, in our Federal Reserve system, "oversight" is a euphemism for "ignore the 800 lb gorilla in the room". The regulators' unstated mission and directive is to be complicit in facilitating the fox to watch the chicken coop. Ms. Segarra refused to play this corrupt game and was later fired for refusing to "soften" her position as to GS's behavior. When the tapes were released, the story got some traction, and I recall thinking the night I heard her interview on NPR's "This American Life" that maybe something would finally be done to punish GS and Wall Street.Nevertheless, in the Beltway news cycle, it died quickly. To add insult to injury, not only did Congressional oversight committees give it little notice, Ms. Segarra's lawsuit for wrongful termination was later dismissed. So much for my idealism.We are now headed deeper down the dark rabbit hole towards another collapse that will make the last one look like a pillow fight. The Libor Scandal, Wells Fargo, etc. Ms. Segarra's tapes were the proverbial canary in the coalmine. The truth is, Americans don't really care. They say they do, but half of us vote against our own economic interests and allow this corrupt state of economics to suffocate us. In the end, the Vampire Squid will win. And what's left of America will rest in the belly of the beast.Thank you Ms. Segarra. While those soulless men and women on Wall Street bleed us dry, assisted by their corrupt lackeys at the Federal Reserve, it gives me some solace to know that there are patriots like yourself who will not let their criminal deceit go unnoticed. I for one have called you an American hero many a time. I am so sorry for how you were treated by this evil system. At the very least, by purchasing the book I can validate the story of your courage.It's one every American should read. Yet, I am pragmatic enough to know that most of them will never hear nor read how you stood unyielding in the face of people who have no political moral compass. Money has no patriotism. They have vicariously sold their souls to the devil. You, my dear lady, can look yourself in the mirror every morning knowing you took the high road. At great cost to your professional life. Your Italian parents must be very proud of their daughter.I tip my hat to your dedication and service to our country. You are one of America's great, unheralded heroes...

Despite this being a book about banking compliance (boring)... this story captured my attention for days as I read it all the way through. I have high respect for the author and such sympathy for what she had to endure... all because she wanted to do the right thing and do a good job. Some of the language regarding banking compliance was a bit hard for me to follow because I know nothing about such things. But the human aspects of the story really came through - corruption, courage, company politics, kindness, friendship, love and evil. Highly recommended.

"Noncompliant" is an important contribution to the Wall Street genre. I encourage all "financial people" to read it. For the younger cohort of this group, my suggestion is "don't be like the characters who don't do their jobs OR like the characters for whom 'dishonesty' is their leading job qualification."

Kudos to a courageous financial regulator, who explained her travails meeting both successes and loses. Her work encourages the rest of us to be vigilant against these Wall Street Goliaths and the Fed. She is a superb writer who should consider expanding her writing. Carmen Segarra, a female lawyer I'd hire in an instant.

I liked to read this book. But the author never fully explained why GS gets a special deal from the supervisors. Otherwise it is interesting to get an inside view of how bank oversight operates.

It does list the format is paperback, but with a calendar, you don't expect it to be bound like a book. But if it were a book, the pages would be in a different orientation. Disappointed. The photos are a little dull and there are too many cat pictures for my taste. It would have been nice to see the calendar photos before buying. Each month does not have the little calendar for the month previous and ahead either. I've come to expect that in a calendar.The holes in the pages in the photos were done by me. It comes with no holes to hang it

I wish I had read the other review first. Was VERY disappointed in this small, booklike calendar. Did not expect cat pictures in a quilt calendar and there were many pictures that were fuzzy. Just for the fact that it was a calendar and had correct dates it will get 1 star from me.

Grew up near the area about which she writes. I really try hard not to react to the centuries old stereotypes of the region, along with those of poor, rural Americans. Stupid, inbred, mystical. Close to the earth and nature but in a very creepy way. I love Lee Smith as a writer but if you want a great story with this regional approach, try Denise Giardina.

Lee Smith was born in 1944 in Grundy, Virginia, a small coal-mining town in the Appalachian Mountains. The author of 12 novels (critics esteem her novel "Fair and Tender Ladies" as her best) and four collections of short stories. She currently lives in Hillsborough, North Carolina."Black Mountain Breakdown," Lee Smith's fourth novel, is a cautionary tale featuring the protagonist, Crystal Renee Spangler, an intelligent, beautiful, and gifted young woman. Because of traumatic experiences--she is raped on the same day her father dies--and poor moral choices stemming from a desperate desire to be loved--she suffers a debilitating "nervous breakdown." It's not a pretty picture, but is told in fascinating, colorful detail, with artistry, creativity, and memorable poetic language. I will be taking a workshop with Lee Smith and wanted to read her books. Turns out I read two. I could not get through Fair and Tender Ladies so I picked up Black Mountain Breakdown about Crystal, the beauty queen. Lee's ability to create a complex heroine whom one cannot help love despite the flaws is remarkable and make for a great novel. Her style is spare and polished and never gets in the way of the story.The reason I'm giving 4 stars rather than 5 is the ending. I felt the book faded out rather than ended. Lee Smith is a wonderful writer and this book was no exception. Good story and good character development as well as excellent writing.

The author's depiction of the people in a small, southwestern town in Virginia is excellent. Of course, she writes from her own experiences. The story was interesting, the main characters were fairly well developed, but I was not ready for the near tragic ending. I cried for Crystal at the end.

If novels dealing with sexually troubled young women who are suffering from great mental trauma are your bag -- go ahead and read this one. Although it is well written, the constant fall from sanity expressed in the character Crystal is more than a little depressing -- it is very tiring to read. I loved Fair and Tender Ladies - perhaps because of the character's ability to progress instead of regress. I am not dumping this book altogether -- it was primarily well written; however, a book about the demise of someone who is not written to be a likeable character is like hearing news about someone who does not even qualify as an acquaintance: it is news you do not need to hear. I also saw a lot of similarities in subject in Faith Sullivan's Empress of One, which I did enjoy a bit more than this novel, due in part to the main character having more going for her than just looks and overt sexuality.

This is another book about the South in mid last century. Could not believe that main character did not seek help. Maybe it was a sign of the times. The book was OK but I've read or there's very similar in tone.

It had a bit of am autobiographical tone. I learned a lot about the area of Lee Smith's youth.

I absolutely love this book!. Emmet Fox originally wrote the book in the late 1930's but it's still relevant to this day. The very first time I read "Sermon on the Mount" (back in 2013) I had no idea it was originally published 75+ years before. The text is beautifully written and Fox had a way of describing advanced concepts first in complex ways then simplifying it down to something easily digestible. I believe this technique was used so that people with different backgrounds and comprehension skills can read & reread this book and still come away with something new to think about every time. I would recommend "Sermon on the Mount" to anyone looking to expand their spirituality or to anyone just wanting to broaden their horizons through the classics... and that's what this book is...a classic.

I was thinking that this would be just another book that would incrementally add to my spiritual journey. I was wrong, dead wrong. This book has served to reshape me in every way. I am in a 12 step program and have developed a deep faith through the holy spirit yet, had not reconciled my religious experiences and understanding as a child and student in the Catholic church. This book is a significant read. After 3 years of reading and re-reading this book I now have a solid foundation in faith that continues to grow. It has reintroduced me to Jesus, who he was, who he is, and is shaping me into the man God has intended. The book gave me enough understanding that my current "significant read" is the bible. I simply love this book.

I keep reading it again and again. I am not particularly religious but just love the encouragement and the positive view of spiritual life especially when we are bombarded with negative comments of all sorts. I like knowing that I can make a difference in my life and in the process hopefully in the life of others.

Emmet Fox commanded 1,000's of followers as a modern day spiritual philosopher and interpreter of the bible with his 'Scientific Truth' about Jesus, The Sermon on The Mount and The Lord's Prayer. No doubt his simplification of God, Truth and religions still hits home as his followers have a website for all his work and free downloads by pdf of most of it. Also known as Bill W.'s source for most of his successful Alcoholic's Anonymous Big Book teachings and 12 Steps that remain the most effective treatment for alcoholism today, Emmet Fox' works will remain timeless too.

One of my favorite things about the book is Fox's bold statements: "Jesus did not teach a theology. He taught principles." Don't let that worry you. He neverthelEss convinces us that Jesus is the son of God and is worthy of the title Savior of the World. And be assured that Fox is not wushu washy on Jesus message: " look either Jesus meant what he said or he did not . I we believe he meant what he said in one part of scripture, then believe he meant what he said in the Gospel of Mathew that we are indeed to turn the other cheek, love our enemies, repay not evil with evil but repay evil with good!.

This book is a “power of positive thinking” book and does not align with biblical teaching. Its focus is on the power of our own minds to change things. For those who truly want to understand Jesus’ cross and His transforming power, this is not the book for you.

The hardback, and he paperback gets "loved" underline, margin notes, stars.The 8 Beatitudes, are the instruction of how to use your Dominion--how life works. But, misunderstood, it's meaning was lost and applied only to your physical actions. In reality, it is your thought process, and your beliefs, and your prejudices etc that create a problem. It tells you how to clean up your subconscious (which has all the power) , so you attain your Happy Healthy Wealthy life. Two points here: the "persecution" comes from your subconscious. Not martyrdom. Second, when someone is evil, you need to understand that, their Christ Within is crying out for your help.LOVE YOUR ENEMY and forgive, so they are relieved of that extra burden, and others who are futher along on the spiritual path can do the same for you. God is all there is, God is Love, Love never created evil.I am into Emmet Fox. In the Lords Prayer, Jesus knew that his message would be corrupted overtime, but the Lords Prayer "Our Father", could not be misunderstood. It is Jesus pure teaching, safe, that too is a must read. It would end all conflict.
