This book varies little from the others that Strobel has written with his statement of the obvious "Next I decided I had to visit and interview, none other than the leading expert on..." :) know what I mean?

Lee Strobel's "A Case for Christ" was highly instrumental in leading me to accept Jesus Christ as my Lord & Savior. Coming from a scientific background, I was also skeptical about this whole "religion thing". However, the methodical scientific approach and evidence he discovered in his search for the truth, convinced me it is far more logical to place my faith in Jesus than not. I can do nothing but highly recommend this book and the movie if you are searching for the truth about Jesus Christ.

Lee was an Atheist, and his wife, an Agnostic.What makes this book so interesting, even as a believer, is the fact that Lee, former legal editor for the Chicago Tribune, embarked on a 2 year investigation into the reality of Christ. Was Jesus who He said He was? Did He really exist in the flesh? Are the biblical accounts just made up? Were there eye witness testimonies to miracles that supposedly happened through Jesus? Can groups of people maintain eye witness accounts without those stories becoming totally altered after passing down through even the first 20 people let alone generations?The really great thing about Lee's "investigation" was that he set out to prove that his wife, who became a believer, and all the rest of us, were caught up in a huge scam. Experts in the fields where Lee's questions could be addressed were engaged in this quest. This book is not fiction!Also, the movie, if you see it, does a great job of summarizing the whole investigation, and you get to "meet" those who were called on to fully answer Lee's questions, and they are not actors.

It's hard to rate this book with only 5 stars. I was raised a Mormon. After leaving the cult due to the Mormon inconsistencies and contradictions I found myself in a state of limbo. I didn't know what to believe. I knew that a God existed but wasn't sure if it was the Christian God, the many many Hindu gods or maybe some deity that was unknown and impersonal.The Case for Christ was a critical look at Christianity from the perspective of an atheist. Lee Strobel left no stone unturned. He tackled the historicity of the person Jesus, the resurrection account, miricals and every objection to which I wanted answers.

Well written and logical. A must for anyone investigating the validity of the claims of the Gospel.

I am a christian. My parents were born again long before I was born. My father was immensely and I mean it, immensely transformed after receiving christ. We prayed three times a day, and I was a firm beleiver in Christ simply by reading the bible and listening to men of God. Mama always spoke vividly about the Kingdom yet to come. It is the happiest time of my parents lives, speaking about Christ. I therefore knew christ without reviewing the evidence. Reviewing the evidence in this book has given me a new drive and commitment to the cause and now I am altogether stronger and better grounded. I wish I had read this book years ago! I would definately have had better use of my time witnessing for christ.

Author Lee Strobel makes the statement quoted above at the end of this book. To him, the witness of the Spirit to us through an encounter with Christ is the ultimate confirmation of the truths proposed and taught by Christianity.Before this, he spends 14 chapters in the book looking at common objections some people present for why they do not believe that Jesus is truly God as Christians believe. Strobel--who was once himself a nonbeliever/atheist--refutes the objections and is convinced that the objections are baseless. His arguments convinced me, too, but not all of the chapters were as important to me as the others. We all come to acceptance or rejection of Jesus as God from different places, and unless we are set in our thinking against the truth of Christian revelation, it seems to me that at least some of Strobel's reasons should prove to be persuasive. I have known people, however, who are so set in their opposition to accepting the divinity of Christ that I doubt this book (or any others) will make a difference. (I had a friend in college who was so wounded by life while a child that he turned against God in anger and identified as an atheist. He refused to consider any arguments for Christ and the Church and had build up a wealth of reasons why he was correct.)This book should also be helpful to those who already believe in Christ because it presents many arguments and reservations by those opposed to belief in Christ. Knowing the arguments and sensible reasons against them can help Christians understand those opposing Christ and gives believers understanding of how to counter those arguments.I agree with Strobel about the importance of the Spirit revealing the truth to us. While I was somewhat catechized and taught about Christian truths as a child (as much as a post-Vatican II child could be!) and didn't have great objections to belief, my faith was not deep and wasn't really important to me. Confirmation of my belief came to me as I encountered Christ though Scripture, prayer, the Church and sacraments (especially the Eucharist), and the community of believers. My now long pilgrimage in seeking to know Christ and understand him has led to deeper faith and a more joyful experience of it. Over time, indifference and questions I once had melted away. At times the "melting" was quite rapid; at other times, quite slow. But I persevered and my pilgrimage continues and enriches my life more as time passes. And I think that through me, my faith is also enriching the lives of others too. As Sister Pat says, "Thank you, Jesus."

Based upon the 3000+ reviews in just a month, and the rather high rating, I was definitely looking forward to The Short Drop, so you can imagine my surprise when I found that almost the complete first half of the novel, billed as a political thriller, was nothing but an excruciatingly slow set up for the second half of the book. Truly, other than finding out a few bits and pieces on the backgrounds of several of the lead characters (it's really more of a team effort than a single protagonist), the only thing that really "happens" in the entire first half of the novel is the recounting of the kidnapping of the current VP's daughter (who is now running for President), from 10 years earlier. Had it not been for the many positive reviews driving me on to find out what was so great about this book, I would definitely have stopped reading well before I got to the halfway point. While the writing was fairly crisp, the one thing that became particularly irksome was the repetitiveness of the author's sentence structure, which was basically, "The man did such and such." Again and again and again, and in a row. Not the sign of of professional writer in my humble opinion, who would or should know better, to vary the sentence structure to keep it from becoming so monotonous. That said, I did enjoy the second half of the book which did keep moving from beginning to end, holding my interest without my having to push myself to read it like I did for the first half of the book. This, however, then brings me to a rather troubling criticism, and one which should not be taken lightly. Perhaps it's, as they say, just a case of great minds thinking alike, but about a year and a half ago, I read a novel entitled, "The Moroni Deception," the quite memorable plot of which, has managed to stay with me this whole time (unlike a lot of formulaic thriller novels where you can barely recount the plot details a week later from the twelve previous that you read). So, when the central plot line in The Short Drop turned out to be the fact that a current Presidential candidate's 13 year old daughter had been kidnapped, I merely wrote that off as a coincidence. Then soon after, when a sociopathic assassin, on orders from who would appear to be the mysterious central villain, begins stalking the unsuspecting protagonist with orders to kill him if he should find what he is searching for, I was like, well that's certainly more that quite a bit coincidental also. But the near identical reveals in the finale, which I won't give away as a spoiler, I was now almost convinced went way beyond coincidence, and in retrospect, now seems like the majority of the very few plot lines in The Short Drop, are just several of the twists and subplots straight out of The Moroni Deception. While these plot lines provided the central and ultimately intriguing story in The Short Drop (the second half anyway), I don't think that is a good thing if they were in fact "borrowed."

I love when I find books outside of my usual genres of choice that I enjoy this much. I’ve found that thrillers, particularly those with a political bent, can be a little light on character development and a little heavy on the unbelievable-and-over-the-top plots. Not at all so with The Short Drop. The characters are well developed, complex and multi-faceted, flawed and susceptible to injury (both emotional and physical). The story and mystery build in that wonderful way that leaves you rooting for their success, fearing for their safety, and generally feeling as though they’re real people, having real experiences. I was equally invested in the outcome of the characters as the plot.Gritty, suspenseful and believable, I didn’t want (really couldn’t!) put it down. The ending is at once unexpected and darkly emotional. I felt like I’d gotten a glimpse into a world I didn’t want to have to see and couldn’t look away from.All of this combined with good writing and great word usage make this a book I’m likely to read more than once!

The Short Drop by Matthew Fitzsimmons is one of those books that got pretty popular with thousands of reviews on Amazon yet I have no idea how. It's really one of those things that is so mysterious to me but when I saw it on sale for $1.99, I quickly swiped it up. Everyone needs to read a good mystery story from time to time. I don't think I've ever used the word "meh" in any of my reviews. It's unprofessional and well, not really a word at all. But I just can't help but label this book as anything but "meh". I'm sorry author, but I had to do it. The "reveal" was hardly anything worth plowing through this 400 page book for. Characters teetered on the borderline of me not really caring for. Not to mention, a closure with characters that literally, and I mean literally had me blurting out the words "Are you serious?". All this combined to make me drop that three letter bomb on this book.The author does give us characters that are at least believable in that they aren't dodging bullets every other chapter like the second coming of the matrix. However, these very same characters are very cookie cutter like and stereotypical. Like hmm, where have we met these guys before? Oh that's right, every other book out there. I can almost guarantee that by the time you finish with the book, you'll hardly remember any of them the day after.The pacing of the story was a bit slow going but I didn't have any trouble following the plot or what was going on. The actual writing was average in that he did just enough to not make me fall asleep or stop reading altogether. Some of the cliff hangers at the end of the chapters made sure I read just a little more than I should. The biggest disappointment with this book was the actual mystery itself. Once that tiny bit of hint was dropped, I kept thinking please don't do what I think you're going to do. Please don't. Ah crap. You did.The other disappointment came from how things actually ended or unfolded with a couple of the character at the end. It was just mind boggling to me of how the author chose to end it. It was hilarious but in a very bad way. I definitely have to drop the hammer in my spoiler section below.As you can gathered, my review is pretty negative. There's not much to like and many of the ideas used could have been more original. It just felt like something was holding the author back. If he could have been more daring, I think the story might have interested me a lot more.************SPOILERS BELOW************Billy - A littleclosure would have been nice since he loved Suzanne so much. He most likely would have found out about what happened to Lombard in the end but again, a little closure for the story would have been nice.George - You did him dirty. We follow him for the better part of the book and we have no idea what happens to him in the end. I can only assume that Jenn was able to find and save him.Tinsley - Let's be friends? Are you serious? Let's be friends? After all that talk about the meaning of time for Tinsley throughout the book, I expected something a lot more clever in the end than "Let's be friends". Come on man.Lombard - Biggest joke of a closure I have read in a while. After all that, we as the readers don't even get to witness the final exchange between Lombard and his wife when she confronted him. You serious author? Why even devout sections to Lombard if all you're going to do is this in the end and block it out for the readers? It was a waste of time. I would have expected for the big, bad and witty politician to put up a fight and at least deny things. In fact, there wasn't even condemning evidence as Tinsley had the report! All the wife had was some writing in Suzanne's book which could have been misconstrued for something else if he played it smart!

Starts good with interesting characters and complex plot but ends poorly with many loose ends and an unsatisfying final chapter. If this is a first novel, it is a portentous beginning. I think a new editor might be a help.

It should/could have been 5 stars but for the stupid ending of the book.Most of Breathing Room is ESP at her best: engaging and self-aware H&h, (which I particularly prefer to those walking around blind to their feelings and only on the last page BOOM! we are in love!) believable story and evolving relationships with fun, wit and character.But then comes the ending, the last 4-3 chapters - with witch craft, Lightning and Thunder and a heroine that runs amok. I can't think why ESP reverts to such a stupid, out of character (both for her and for her H&h) ending for which up to that moment were a reasonable, coherent, feet on the ground people. It was disappointing and left a foul taste in my mouth.

Her fiancé has fallen in love with a woman who is Isabel's opposite. Her fired assistant has sold a negative story about Isabel to the tabloids.Ren has been deeply hurt by his past. He is a good guy who doesn't see himself that way. Ren was a trust fund baby with an absent father and a drugged out mother. He drank, did drugs and had sex through his teens. After marrying and divorcing young, Ren has not had serious relationships. He takes roles as villains because in some sense, he sees himself as the villain. It is easier for him to seek out within himself the feelings and emotions of the villain than to see himself as the hero.Through the relationship between Ren and Isabel and as a result of all the chaos happening around them, Ren and Isabel begin to see themselves more realistically. I really liked how the good side of Ren is slowly revealed, but even so, he is not by any means perfect. He has a creative and mischievous side that causes him create discord.The romance is unexpectedly funny and sweet. Ren dresses up in various disguises in order to avoid fans and paparazzi and I laughed out loud at some of his getups. Phillips uses the fact that Ren is an actor to her advantage by allowing him to use that ability to create comic moments between Ren and Isabel. Their playacting allows Isabel to be herself and that translates into their bedroom play as well. This book does not shy away from light bondage and playacting between the characters, but it is always kept in a light tone.The characters have a real chemistry and the storyline often moved in ways that I did not expect. Several times the action is built up to a point where a certain outcome is expected. It is at that point that the action turns and that makes the story feel more real, more grounded. This is not a book where difficulties can be resolved by characters talking. Just when it appears that the plot with turn that way, the characters actually talk and the plot moves off in a different direction.The dialogue is clever and I was compelled to turn page after page. The book takes a risk by making the first sexual encounter between these characters to be an unmitigated disaster. I was surprised that this isn't a story about redemption. Both these characters have made themselves. They only need to recognize who they are apart from their image of themselves. One of the things I love about this book is how Ren and Isabel serve as mirrors for each other allowing them to grow beyond their stunted image of themselves.Secondary romance often feels forced in books. Here it helps define the main couple much better. By bringing in a married couple with a bunch of kids, it allows both Ren and Isabel to see themselves as different than their usual roles.The Italian location is romantic and the local color makes this a captivating choice. The language makes the setting feel lush, welcoming and it is clear how the characters can find the place healing.I highly recommend this book. It is sweet and funny and ends in a wholly satisfying place.NOTE: I received a free copy of this book William Morrow from in order to provide a review of the book. I am very disappointed in the new reader. I owned the cassette and I loved the voice of the reader on the cassette. She was talented and captured the character of the main characters in her voice modulations. This new reader is overly dramatic, and at times she sounds like she is giving one character a Mexican accent when they are Italian. I was so disappointed when I listened to this version. I thought that a simple change of format from cassette to CD would be exact as in music cassettes to CD. After listening to the second CD, I had to stop. It was very bad. Now, I am going to buyva replacement cassette because "Breathing Room" is one of my favorite audio stories when read by a talented reader.

Unlike many of the other reviewers, I'm really not a SEP fan at ALL. I've read a few of her other books, and I was pretty unimpressed (although to the last one, they are really funny with great dialogue. Just not that interesting). I wasn't expecting much from this one either, but I had a long plane ride the next day so I bought it the night before. I was so pleasantly surprised. I had to force myself to put it down so I had enough to read on the plane! The reason I'm not a SEP fan is because I usually find her main characters either unlikable, unrelatable or unrealistic. Conversely, I thought the hero and heroine in this one were really refreshing and a little different from the run of the mill romance book staples. I really cared about Isabel's character and liked watching her journey towards accepting a little disorder. I also liked that both of them were at a point in their lives when they were doing a little introspection. Loved the subplot with Tracy and the kids. Wasn't too fond of the villager "mystery" subplot but it didn't detract too much and gave the main characters an excuse to spend time together. Also, SEP definitely has a way with writing and Ren practically sizzled off the page. After I read this, I gave SEP another chance with a vengeance but sadly, this remained the only one I really liked. Very good read and would suggest it to people who Aren't SEP fans because I think its different from her normal (which may be why I like it) but keeps her trade mark humor and excellent writing style.

I just love the bedroom acting and the attraction of opposites. They are both good for each other. Plus the fixing of a marriage as a secondary story always gets to me.

SEP is a new author for me - I've been reading some of her earlier works & saw this new release & read the previews - decided I had to read it. I was NOT disappointed. Ren is such a charming fellow (I'd give him a "10") and you'd think he would be such an UNlikely match for Isabel. (The woman makes "lists" for heaven's sake!) Throw in the romance & allure of Tuscany & an ex wife for spice - and voila! - I was hooked from the beginning. I had to laugh at myself sometimes, because some of Isabel's "foibles" were not unlike my own - and Ren seemed to take Isabel's approach to life in a most humorous way. When things really start getting funny because Isabel thinks Ren is a male prostitue, well, you've just got to read for yourself!

The title really does say it all....this is 4 little books of big (IMO meaning popular, not necessarily as in many, which is what I had assumed) wedding ideas. I would skip this one if I had the opportunity to do it over again as it literally was not useful at all. All it really had were pictures for possible inspiration, but so does every wedding magazine you can get at the grocery store...
