We love this book!

Beautiful watercolor technique, but disturbing perspective/scale. And the Prose? poetry? Broken meter, poor flow, bad example of lit for young minds.

After spending a week in Homer/Kachemak Bay area I picked up this gem in a local bookstore and HAD to bring it home for my girls! LOVE the story, LOVE Sitka's grit and LOVE the illustrations! My girls have requested this at bedtime since I returned home with it!

This is a charming rhyming picture book about an adventurous young girl named Sitka Rose, with colorful illustrations by Shannon Cartwright that teach as much about Alaska as the story does. "Sitka Rose" is a great tale for teaching both girls and boys about interacting with the world around them and taking life into your own hands. A timeless tale spanning from the creation of the Yukon River and the Denali National Park and Preserve all the way up through the Gold Rush, includes numerous Alaskan animals and a map of Alaska. The author, Shelley Gill, and Cartwright are both Alaska residents -- and it shows. A great book!

It's a fun tall tale. I love that it's a female character. I enjoyed the opportunity to talk to my girls about tall tales and legends and the fun of making up silly stories just for fun to explain something. It also gave us a chance to talk about some local history (being from Seattle, there is a Gold Rush museum we have visited related to the Alaska Gold Rush).

We purchased this book while in Sitka and thought it was totally charming! Fun story, great illustrations! i even went back for a second copy to send to a friend.

The book is excellent, but the Kindle Edition is full of errors like must elide for mustelid (referring to the classification of wolverines as members of the weasel family, a word that is misspelled nearly every time it appears, in many different ways), and many other typos that look like someone scanned a text edition with an OCR, and gave it to a non-native speaker of English with zero science background to do a proofreading/spellcheck. I can read past a lot of minor such errors but in this one they are so pervasive that they often took me out of the narrative.

Overall, an interesting read about the wolverines of Glacier. I spend a lot of time in Glacier so the book was especially intriguing to me. I first wondered if I would be able to read an entire book about one small animal, but it was easy. Fascinating species indeed that we really knew little about.... until Doug shared his writing about the Glacier Park study. Doug does get on his "soapbox" a bit towards the end of the book and I found myself skimming through some of that, but still a very good book. I enjoyed it!

It's a good read for anyone interested in these animals and the Park they're documented in. Glacier National Park is an amazing place and these animals are as well. The author does an admirable job keeping things on-the-rails for the most part. It's easy to sense his strong opinions on many environmental subjects, not that he's unreasonable in having them...

I've been fascinated with wolverines for years and this book is very informative. The research took place in Glacier National Park, truly a national treasure. My granddaughter worked in the park one summer and did a presentation on wolverines. I'm hoping to read more books about wolverines.

She is extremelyhappy with the book, stating it is full of information, delivered in an engaging style. Five stars for this one!

I've loved wolverines since the day my son and I discussed raw meat with the pair at Cheyenne Mt. Zoo (who subsequently escaped from the zoo and, according to folklore, helped jump-start the reintroduction of wolverines to Colorado). About the same time, I heard James Dickey read "To the Last Wolverine," one of the great American wildlife poems (an audio is available on-line).Chadwick's book is almost as much fun as the conversation at Cheyenne Mountain, if not as heart-gripping as Dickey's poem (which surfaces in bits throughout the book). As Chadwick says, most of us -- and most of the scientific community -- have at best a cartoon grasp of the wolverine. He's a sort of indigenous Tasmanian Devil at best, and at worst a representation of everything we see as adversarial in Nature. Chadwick not only gives the wolverine its first real book, but offers proof of a radically different animal than our cartoon nightmares. The very model of ferocity? Well, yeah, but there's so much more.Contrary to mythology, wolverines are social. The study team that Chadwick joined found social interactions not just between mother and kits, but between fathers and their adolescent sons, both adult sized and ranging through Glacier Nat'l Park on training sessions. Their socialization is rare among mammals, rarer among predators, inconceivable in an animal legendary for its vicious, raging, competitive individualism.The book follows multiple generation of named animals, and you come to know them as individuals, cheering their successes and grieving for their deaths. One poignant picture shows a young wolverine who slipped crossing a cliff and fell her death. The body was found with its mother's track all around it. Chadwick is not giving us an antidotal Disney view of things; he documents what appears to have been a fratricide.Wolverines. The book was in great condition when I got it, and I read it in about 2 days. It was engaging, emotional, and genuine. There was some content that was incredibly difficult to read because of how heartbreaking her experiences were. She included graphic and horrible events that she witnessed or experienced. I think it's important to know before reading it that this book isn't going to sugar coat anything. I don't think this book is appropriate for young readers or people with weak stomachs, but I read it for a class and it was very eye opening for me.

A fine book to read if you want to know about the cop's life - especially those in Chicago. I was left admiring them and yet wanting to avoid them. You never know whether you're dealing with a good one or a bad one.Gallo is a fine writer, and this memoir is funny and sad by turns. She captures the first strange days of the rookie, the daily maneuvering of politics (something women must pay especially close attention to if they want to survive), and the numbing horror of seeing evil day in and day out. Eventually her cop career ended due to a suspect beating her with a bat. Her partner, a rookie, ran out the door without firing a shot, leaving Gallo to shoot the man who was trying to kill her. By that time, it seems she was suffering from PTSD, something cops in the big city cannot escape.But most of all, I think, her memoir is full of compassion for her fellow compatriots, the women and men out in the trenches who are basically dealing with scum every day. The stories got a little wearing after a while, but if she could live it, I could read it. I can only imagine what she went through when she served the city of Chicago. After reading this, I'm looking at Chicago politics in a much more skeptical light.

Armed & Dangerous is an excellent book whether you are considering a career in law enforcement or not. Gallo begins her story with her father, who was shot on Easter, describing the pain of being a child of a police officer. She vowed never to become an officer, but life's circumstances forced her to change her mind.From there, she takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride from her days at the Academy to the day she resigned from the Chicago Police Department. Her depiction of the Academy made me wonder if this was fiction because I couldn't believe the brutal fashion in which the trainers handled future officers. A few of them left the Academy with permanent disabilities and no chance at a law enforcement career. She tells us how the rest of them made it through that grueling period, by banding together and forming a team. Being a team player is the most important skill in police work.I felt like I was right there with her as she described her first day on the job with a slacker for a field trainer and how that trainer deserted her when she needed him to back her up. She tells us what it was like to kill a man and what that did to her soul. She tells us what it's like to see a mutilated baby and then have to be professional in dealing with his murdering mother. And, she tells us what it's like to have to go to the same neighborhoods to deal with the same people day after day. There are lots of heartbreaking stories in this book and some incredibly funny ones, too.I found myself laughing out loud at the craziness and the stupidity of both the criminals and the corrupt officers. More often than not, however, I felt disgusted by the drug addicts and the political games of the department brass. Throughout this book, I wondered how she managed to keep her humor when faced with the pain, the terror, and the good ol' boy mentality that tried its best to keep her in the trenches. The end saddened me, but it was typical.Armed & Dangerous stripped me of all my notions about police officers and what they do for a living. Gallo is a powerful writer, and I applaud her for having the courage to write this book. Throw away those police procedural novels. They pale against Gallo's book.

This book is the most realistic account of policing in Chicago that I've ever read. I'm a Chicago Police Officer and can attest to the authenticity of the descriptions contained in this book. Gallo doesn't sugar-coat anything--she describes the Academy like it was, uses language true to policing, and hits it on the head with her definition of "game face". Mostly though, she nails the descriptions of the bosses--from the superintendent through the street sergeant--right on the head. It's exactly what the "real police" think, but can't say, because they would be buried in the Duece on midnights if they did. Thanks, Gina. I hope all the bosses read it and cringe when they recognize themselves! I know I can put names to many current and former P.O.'s from your vivid descriptions. Nice to see the deserving squirm a bit. Assuming they have the conscience to do even that much!

This is about a Female Chicago cop who comes from a long line of cops. I really enjoyed her writing and retelling of her experiences. I am used to NYPD stories and I must say I found some of her encounters and the injuries she suffered truly made me feel bad for her. She was a brave and tough soul and much better than some of her partners, who should be ashamed of themselves and their behavior. Remember NEVER DROP UOUR GUARD. DO NOT STAND IN FRONT OF DOORS, STAY AWAY FROM WINDOWS AND STAY CLEAR OF CLOSETS. Mothers, sons, girlfriends, cousins etc. ALL LIE! WATCH YOUR BACK AT ALL TIMES!
