Review

Praise for North! Or Be Eaten“Peterson deserves every literary prize for this fine book. It is obvious that his musical talents have been put to good use as his use of words, plot and narrative read like a well scored film script. A very fine book, by a very fine writer and future talent. Amazing - thrilling and well worth reading again and again.”–G. P. Taylor, New York Times best-selling author of Shadowmancer and The Dopple Ganger Chronicles“Toothy cows are very dangerous. Andrew Peterson convinced me and shivers run down my spine at the very thought of meeting a toothy cow face to face. The author spills characters like Podo and Nurgabog onto the page, then weaves a tale of danger that holds the reader captive. Believe me, you will relish being held captive by this master storyteller. But be sure you don’t get caught by the Stranders. Those people just ain’t civilized.”–Donita K. Paul, author of The Vanishing Sculptor“In a genre overrun by the gory and the grim, Peterson’s bite-sized chapters taste more like a stew of Gorey (Edward) and Grimm (the Brothers). North! Or Be Eaten is a welcome feast of levity--and clearly a labor of love. Andrew Peterson has awakened my inner eight-year-old, and that is a very good thing.”–Jeffrey Overstreet, author of Auralia’s Colors and Cyndere’s Midnight“An immensely clever tale from a wonderful storyteller - filled with great values and even greater adventure!”–Phil Vischer, creator of VeggieTales “Thrills, chills, spine-tingling mystery, and lots of smiles. It’s not easy to combine heart-pounding danger with gut-busting laughs and make it work, but Peterson pulls it off. For readers who want nonstop action infused with powerful, life-changing themes, North! Or Be Eaten is a must-read.”–Wayne Thomas Batson, best-selling author of The Door Within Trilogy, Isle of Swords and Isle of Fire“Andrew Peterson is a gifted storyteller, scene painter and wordsmith who takes you on a rollicking white-water ride of adventure. Readers of all ages are sure to find North! Or Be Eaten worthy of a big mug filled with a favorite beverage and a cozy nook near a crackling fire for hours on end. Here there be tales within yarns within stories. Listen, reader, bend your ear, but keep an eye peeled lest the dreaded Fangs of Dang be near!”–R. K. Mortenson, author of Landon Snow and The Auctor’s Riddle

This is not a wimpy book for young adults. It's robust. I marked hopeful for the mood of the book because in the end it is the predominant mood, however dark comes in a VERY close second, especially for the whole section of the book dealing with Dugtown and the fork factory. This section brought myself, an adult woman, and my husband to tears and weighed down our hearts, even though it's fictional, because the types of things described in it are very very real in our world. If you want your kids to have a faith that can face the horrors of a fallen world and not shrivel, then this book (and series) is a good tool in that effort. Just make sure you are around to talk through the themes, images and ideas that are raised in it's pages.

I did not expect to fall so in love with this series! My husband and I wrapped up "North, or be Eaten!" and purchased the last two books of the series the next day. (Even though this is technically a children's series, it has enough action, drama, twists, and lessons to entertain adult audiences as well.)This is the second book of the Wingfeather Saga and I recommend reading the first book before this one, but I think it would still make sense if this had to be your starting point... But if possible, do start with "On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness." Anyways....I suppose what makes this books for me was the characters. I wish I could meet some of them! From major characters to minor, they are well built; perfectly flawed; and even with their extremes, somehow believable. There's not the typical trio of perfect and wise main character, goofy sidekick, and a love interest. The story itself was great fun and kept my husband and I guessing. While dark at some points, or a tad scary in others (Tilling Court! Gosh!!! That was horrifying, lol!) there's nothing here that wouldn't be fine for families. The Igiby siblings, though obviously not ordinary, are still a wonderful example for children to learn from.

We just finished this second book in the Wingfeather Saga tonight. The kids and I could NOT sleep without finishing off the last three chapters, all at once! I cannot recommend this book enough. It kept us on the edge of our seats until the very end ~ and we took it with us on many of our summer vacations because we could not leave home without it. The children have embraced this series as a beloved friend. They bounded off to bed tonight asking a million questions about getting our hands on book 3, wondering what the title would be, coming up with their own title ideas, and trying to ponder what it will be about! And that is why I'm here....I hopped on amazon to buy the next book in the series via prime's FAST shipping...and to stop and tell all of you that yes....you NEED to own these books!! They WILL become classics! They are worth every penny, and beautiful on the shelf to boot. For those of you who are already big Wingfeather fans-- did you know there are maps of Aerwiar for sale on the Story Warren website? I found that tonight--and didn't even flinch to buy one on the spot for my sons' bedroom!! So that they can follow the adventures as we go along. A great big map, instead of the tinier maps that are printed inside each book. Thought I'd share that little tidbit! (There are a limited number of maps left--so get there QUICK if this makes you as giddy as it made me!)

I read this series to my teenage daughter when she was little, and recently purchased the entire series on kindle to read again. I still love the series and would give it 5 Stars. However, I'm reducing this to 4 Stars because the formatting for the second book is not nearly as effective for the Kindle App as the first book was. If you've read any of these books, you know that the author puts in lots of footnotes, which are usually very funny and important to the story line. The kindle edition of the first book handles the footnotes perfectly. Each time there is a line that has a footnote, there is a link that jumps you to the appropriate footnote, and then a link back from the footnote to the line in the story that referenced it. In the remaining three books, the kindle edition does not handle the footnotes well. There is a link to jump you to the footnotes at the end of the chapter, but there is no way to get back to the line that referenced it except going back page-by-page.

We've now read all 4 of the Wingfeather Saga books and while I love them all (and think the ending is just brilliant), I think this one is my favorite. The pace at the beginning of the book was a little exhausting as I was so nervous for Janner and crew but it slowed down and allowed time for the characters to have to face some extremely tough decisions. Not all of them made good choices, sadly, and we watch the family suffer the consequences. I'm so glad to have read this book with my children. The ending was the first book that's ever made me cry (the 3rd and 4th books in this series were the 2nd and 3rd... darn Andrew Peterson!). If you like an exciting adventure and deep themes, read this series all the way through. I can't imagine anyone not falling in love with the Wingfeathers as much as my family of 6 did.

The Wingfeathers are revealed truly for who they are and they must escape the Fangs. The story is full of twists, struggles, betrayals. New friends are made and old friends are met again. In all of this Janner still doesn't want to be the Throne Warden, but he can't get away from his duties to the King, his brother.Peterson's imagination is amazing, proved by the wonderful beasts he creates and the names he gives them. My favorite is the toothy cow, but I wouldn't like to meet one in the forest.

I am generally not a fan of fiction, even historically based fiction, but I must admit that I found "Night Fall" to be an entertaining and thought provoking book. This book was a gift from someone who knows me extremely well, and understands the nuances of my reading selections as well as my interest in aviation and aviation accidents (I am an airline pilot by profession). It turned out to be an excellent selection for me.The main characters are a husband and wife detective team investigating the TWA 800 accident that happened off Long Island in 1996. The official NTSB accident report explains the probable cause as an electrical fault igniting fuel vapors in a nearly empty fuel tank, a fault similar to those which have been factually proven to have occurred in other Boeing aircraft with catastrophic results. The main issue rests with a large number of witnesses who claim to have seen a missile rising toward the aircraft prior to the explosion. The book is built around the investigation into a potential large-scale conspiracy to cover up a missile attack on TWA 800. The plot is generally credible and is told in a suspenseful manner. The author has a generally good grip on aviation matters, and clearly did a lot of research into the accident and potential explanations for witness divergence from the NTSB report. In the book there is a couple on the beach filming themselves and who, quite accidentally, capture the destruction of TWA 800 on videotape. The plot thickens for the duration of the book, although I had no difficulty foreseeing where the plot was going in the last fifty or so pages when the protagonist started setting up a breakfast meeting at "Windows on the World," the former posh restaurant on top of the North Tower of the World Trade Center, especially when the book was set in the summer and early fall of 2001.The book works well for a historical thriller, but the last few pages of the book are contrived and not especially believable: that's the only reason I am giving the book four versus five stars. The book is a well done thriller, but in the end fails to answer any of the serious questions that it raises about the credibility of the NTSB report or the official government position. My personal position is that it is impossible to know definitively what caused the explosion, and I believe that a number of witnesses believe that they saw a missile track TWA 800 and destroy it. As an experienced airline pilot and someone quite familiar with the work of the NTSB, I have a great deal of confidence that their findings are correct, and that no forensic evidence of a missile exists. Having said that, many disagree with me, including some pilots and accident investigators I know. This uncertainty is why the NTSB reports reveal a "probable cause," inasmuch as often the actual cause is impossible to discern given the evidence available to investigators. I am not here to make up your mind on what caused the explosion of TWA 800 (the NTSB report is available free online) but to simply say that this book is an intriguing, generally well written book of an alternate hypothesis of the fate of the aircraft. It raises many questions, some of which are more valid than others, but in the end fails to resolve some of the key dilemmas posed throughout the book. Nonetheless, I recommend this book as a work of fiction based on actual, horrific, events. As popular thrillers go, it is quite good.

I've read a number of DeMille novels recently and have been very happy. This one was disappointing and for the life of me, I can't see how this particular book warrants all the five-star and four-star ratings. The writing is generally fun and easy to read, but there's just way too much filler and not really that much plot. At one point I nearly quit reading, which would be a "first" for me for a DeMille book. Although you learn quite a lot of theories about TWA 800, essentially the story is just one very long search for a couple that may have filmed the crash. Unfortunately the search goes on far, far too long and in the end, nothing happens. There's a coverup but never any explanation why there needed to be a coverup, and what is "revealed" cannot be reconciled with the official report or the other facts that are given. It doesn't matter, though, because the ending is telegraphed the minute you read that the flight went down in 1996 and he refers to attending a memorial for the fifth year anniversary. Since you can't have a fictional ending to a real event, the math telegraphs how the book must end. In the end, the entertainment value and information about various theories let me rate it a "three" but it's very close to a "two."

This book was great. Since I don't have a lot of time to read, I purchase the Kindle version & upgrade it with Audio Narration. To me, this makes the characters more interesting. I especially like how the narrator portrays John Corey, New York accent and all. His wisecracks and dry sense of humor are much funnier, and you get a better sense of who John Corey is.Once again, Nelson DeMille has knocked it out of the park. The book is, for the most part, suspenseful throughout, especially the ending. There have been other reviews that go into more detail about the book, so I won't elaborate on those reviews, but I will say that it's a great book and I highly recommend it!

Another great one from DeMille. I know this is an older book, but I am just now going through the John Corey series. I love the Corey character - smart, snarky, distrusts authority, questions everything, is not super human, tells corny jokes, and is good with the ladies. DeMille plots are intricate, well crafted and hard to guess. However, I am not sure I like the ending to this story or not. On the one hand, you are built up to the anticipation that the bad guys are going to get their noses rubbed into their deceit and fraud - but given the historical nature of the subject, there is really no other ending that could have been written. In one sense, the ending was masterful, but I was left unfulfilled and wanting for closure. But perhaps this was DeMille's intent.

The subject matter, the real TWA 800 crash/explosion, was a terrific point on which to base a fictional novel, and Nelson Demille is a great write of fiction. However, on the whole I was not impressed with this book. The main character, his 'antagonistic' protagonist, John Corey, spent way too much time being flippant, hostile, and deceptive in his search for truth on what did down this plane. Yes, Corey's character is flippant and angry by nature in other books, but there comes a point when as a plot device it gets tiresome, and that's the case here. It's an 'okay' read for Demille lovers, and gives the basic history of TWA 800's demise, so I wouldn't discourage readers, but I wouldn't keep this in my list of "read again" books.
