Great story. Well written. Engaging. Most Memorable line? "Make your stand in the parking lot..." says a Daddy Warden to his 12 yo daughter who is painting his toe nails the evening after the Game Wardens find a murdered college girl who was forced into the vehicle of a suspected serial killer.I can still "see" the red gloves of a little girl who fell through the ice and "feel" the cold wet uniform of the Warden who broke through the ice a few steps from shore to carry her out.I can "see" the grin of a man who's Mother is lost in the woods as he looks at a room full of volunteers that have come to help search for her and "hear" his Joy that so many people came together for his Mom.The use of language is simple and satisfying.

I read a library copy of this wonderful book when it was published 10 years ago and have thought about it and quoted from it more times than I can count. I was so happy to find the Kindle version as a "Daily Deal" and to reread it. It's just as good as I remember.The author is a woman who got dealt a terrible hand. Her husband (a respected and beloved State Patrol officer)was killed in a car wreck, leaving her to raise four children aged 10 and under. In the midst of her pain and panic, she managed to keep her off-beat sense of humor and to observe and remember what brought comfort to her in grief and what DIDN'T. Her husband had planned to become a Unitarian/Universalist minister. Seeking a way to channel her need to help others, she attended seminary in his place and became chaplain to the Maine Warden Service.It's the story of her early life and how it led her (surprisingly) to an adult life as the wife of a cop and the mother of four. It's the story of her husband's death and how she refused the role of "plucky widow" and how she and her children went on living - never forgetting the man who had been so important to them, but finding ways to cope and to honor his memory.It's also the story of a group of law enforcement officers who remain quietly in the background until disaster strikes. At that time, they become the most important people in the world. We think of game wardens as lucky folks with stress-free jobs who get to spend all day communing with nature. In reality, they spend most of their time dealing with people and there are some rough customers out in the woods. It is statistically one of the most dangerous law enforcement jobs in the world and they wear guns and body armor for a reason. They also coordinate search and rescue missions. Some end well; others end in tragedy. It's a stressful job that's frequently heart-breaking. Kate's role is to listen and comfort worried parents, grieving spouses, and the wardens who can't always leave the job behind when they go off duty.This is a beautifully written, thought provoking book by a woman you wish you could have for a friend. The books are fantastic, but it was the vendor that impressed me. Mailing labels obviously got switched and a got someone's Greek Art book who lived in South Dakota. I contacted the vendor and he bent over backwards to make it right. I was absolutely impressed. Mistakes happen from time-to-time. and sometimes you simply get ignored. Not this guy. He made it right, e.g. I got the books I ordered, he gave me a credit for shipping the wrong book I received to South Dakota, and he communicated frequently to make sure the issue got resolved.

The original book is great reading for the style with which Stephens writes, for the view of the life at those times in Mexico, for the view of the life of the Indians, and for the sheer adventure of moving through the jungle, fighting malaria, to track down ancient ruins in the 1800s at a time when what is now the "Mayan Riviera" was only myth and rumor. The drawings by Catherwood are fascinating, and the whole adventure is more amazing for being a true story.This edition has been significantly edited by Ackerman, I think lessening the power of the original, which at the moment is not sold by Amazon, but this edition combines the two books into one. 5 stars for the Stephens/Catherwood book, 3 for this version of it.

Unlike the Kindle version of Stephens's prior book, "Incidents of Travel, Central America, Chiapas, Yucatan," this later volume includes the sketches by Catherwood, which add immeasurably to enjoyment of the story. The text is nearly flawless, with only the occasional scanning error.Stephens's prose, as before, is immensely enjoyable: highly literate, carefully descriptive, laced with compassion and gentle irony: "Just as we were leaving the ruins a messenger came to inform us that one of our pistols had shot an Indian. These pistols had never shown any particular antipathy to Indians, and had never shot one before..."Written in the last days before photography brought the world face-to-face with itself, the blend of Stephens's prose and Catherwood's illustrations carry us back to the Age of Exploration in rich, immediate power.Kindle note: there is a Table of Contents with linked chapters, but the TOC button is grayed out on the "Go To" menu.

I've read it before and live in Yucatam....nice to have a Kindle copy to carry around. 170 years old and still a great read!

My wife and visited these sites. The narrative is outstanding!

The two volume Dover edition is much much better. This is watered down, and doesn't contain the important details that make it so interesting. It has very few of the illustrations found in the two volume set. This was a big let down. I bought this thinking it was similar to the Dover addition which a friend of mine owned.

The book came quickly and was in great shape. All in all a very easy transaction and I'm pleased with the process.

I thought this book took too much time explaining how successful the authors were and not enough time on how to develop a business that was truely a succesful community oriented business. It was as if they wanted to sell book number two that shared the true secrets. I have not completed my read yet, but right now I am less impressed in the first half of the book.
