Great story. Well written. Engaging. Most Memorable line? "Make your stand in the parking lot..." says a Daddy Warden to his 12 yo daughter who is painting his toe nails the evening after the Game Wardens find a murdered college girl who was forced into the vehicle of a suspected serial killer.I can still "see" the red gloves of a little girl who fell through the ice and "feel" the cold wet uniform of the Warden who broke through the ice a few steps from shore to carry her out.I can "see" the grin of a man who's Mother is lost in the woods as he looks at a room full of volunteers that have come to help search for her and "hear" his Joy that so many people came together for his Mom.The use of language is simple and satisfying.

I read a library copy of this wonderful book when it was published 10 years ago and have thought about it and quoted from it more times than I can count. I was so happy to find the Kindle version as a "Daily Deal" and to reread it. It's just as good as I remember.The author is a woman who got dealt a terrible hand. Her husband (a respected and beloved State Patrol officer)was killed in a car wreck, leaving her to raise four children aged 10 and under. In the midst of her pain and panic, she managed to keep her off-beat sense of humor and to observe and remember what brought comfort to her in grief and what DIDN'T. Her husband had planned to become a Unitarian/Universalist minister. Seeking a way to channel her need to help others, she attended seminary in his place and became chaplain to the Maine Warden Service.It's the story of her early life and how it led her (surprisingly) to an adult life as the wife of a cop and the mother of four. It's the story of her husband's death and how she refused the role of "plucky widow" and how she and her children went on living - never forgetting the man who had been so important to them, but finding ways to cope and to honor his memory.It's also the story of a group of law enforcement officers who remain quietly in the background until disaster strikes. At that time, they become the most important people in the world. We think of game wardens as lucky folks with stress-free jobs who get to spend all day communing with nature. In reality, they spend most of their time dealing with people and there are some rough customers out in the woods. It is statistically one of the most dangerous law enforcement jobs in the world and they wear guns and body armor for a reason. They also coordinate search and rescue missions. Some end well; others end in tragedy. It's a stressful job that's frequently heart-breaking. Kate's role is to listen and comfort worried parents, grieving spouses, and the wardens who can't always leave the job behind when they go off duty.This is a beautifully written, thought provoking book by a woman you wish you could have for a friend. The books are fantastic, but it was the vendor that impressed me. Mailing labels obviously got switched and a got someone's Greek Art book who lived in South Dakota. I contacted the vendor and he bent over backwards to make it right. I was absolutely impressed. Mistakes happen from time-to-time. and sometimes you simply get ignored. Not this guy. He made it right, e.g. I got the books I ordered, he gave me a credit for shipping the wrong book I received to South Dakota, and he communicated frequently to make sure the issue got resolved.

The original book is great reading for the style with which Stephens writes, for the view of the life at those times in Mexico, for the view of the life of the Indians, and for the sheer adventure of moving through the jungle, fighting malaria, to track down ancient ruins in the 1800s at a time when what is now the "Mayan Riviera" was only myth and rumor. The drawings by Catherwood are fascinating, and the whole adventure is more amazing for being a true story.This edition has been significantly edited by Ackerman, I think lessening the power of the original, which at the moment is not sold by Amazon, but this edition combines the two books into one. 5 stars for the Stephens/Catherwood book, 3 for this version of it.

Unlike the Kindle version of Stephens's prior book, "Incidents of Travel, Central America, Chiapas, Yucatan," this later volume includes the sketches by Catherwood, which add immeasurably to enjoyment of the story. The text is nearly flawless, with only the occasional scanning error.Stephens's prose, as before, is immensely enjoyable: highly literate, carefully descriptive, laced with compassion and gentle irony: "Just as we were leaving the ruins a messenger came to inform us that one of our pistols had shot an Indian. These pistols had never shown any particular antipathy to Indians, and had never shot one before..."Written in the last days before photography brought the world face-to-face with itself, the blend of Stephens's prose and Catherwood's illustrations carry us back to the Age of Exploration in rich, immediate power.Kindle note: there is a Table of Contents with linked chapters, but the TOC button is grayed out on the "Go To" menu.

I've read it before and live in Yucatam....nice to have a Kindle copy to carry around. 170 years old and still a great read!

My wife and visited these sites. The narrative is outstanding!

The two volume Dover edition is much much better. This is watered down, and doesn't contain the important details that make it so interesting. It has very few of the illustrations found in the two volume set. This was a big let down. I bought this thinking it was similar to the Dover addition which a friend of mine owned.

I thought this book took too much time explaining how successful the authors were and not enough time on how to develop a business that was truely a succesful community oriented business. It was as if they wanted to sell book number two that shared the true secrets. I have not completed my read yet, but right now I am less impressed in the first half of the book.

Great beginner's overview for an amateur astronomer! It's comprehensive in its coverage of the sun, moon, galaxy and universe, planets, constellations, and other objects in the night sky - but short page-length entries made it easy to work through without being overwhelming. The diagrams and photos were visually appealing and very helpful for depicting what the text covered. I was disappointed in its strong evolutionary bias, especially in explanations about the age, breadth, and decay of the universe. But overall it was an interesting read and highly informative!

The excellent parts of this book are the sky maps (seasonal), the eclipse tables, and the photographs.It’s a pretty picture book of celestial celebrities. Well written.

A large number of claims have been made for improvements in reading and writing in a society. These range from cognitive skills development such as logical and analytical thinking, to societal advancements like democracy and equality, all the way to social progress manifested in political stability and falling birth rates. According to James Gee, there is little evidence that literacy, in the sense of a cognitive skill that enables us to decode and encode text, has had any such effects. In particular, literacy in this sense has done nothing to reduce social inequality. This is because texts are social products that can only be read and understood as part of an involvement in the larger Discourse that surrounds them. They are, in Gee's words, "the social and historical inventions of various groups of people" (p. 45).So what does this mean? A Discourse (that is, a 'big D Discourse') is a way of "behaving, interacting, valuing, thinking, believing, speaking, and often reading and writing" (p. 3) that allow us to 'perform' our various identities appropriately in contexts. We may be, at different times during the same day, parent, teacher, supervisor, trainee, friend, and stranger, for example. In each of these identities, there are expected ways of behaving, of which reading and writing (what is often referred to as literacy) are just an aspect.Our primary Discourse, the one we learn early in life, is the one in which we are a non-specialized "everyday person" (p. 153). In order to get on in the various contexts of the social world we inhabit, we need to learn secondary Discourses, such as those of the school, church, playground, and workplace. Not only do we have to learn them, we have to acquire them, in the Krashen sense, that is, by being immersed in them and apprenticed in them by more experienced others. They need to become second nature to us so that we can perform the correct behaviors in appropriate contexts. The reason why simply learning to read and write does not help to bring social equality is that some groups in society have greater access to secondary Discourse environments and to the apprenticeship required to be able to navigate them. As Gee describes it, while many middle-class white parents familiarize their children with standard English and with literacy practices that emulate the practices of the school, in many families of other social groups such acculturation does not happen. Gee is keen to point out that this does not make the practices of non-white-middle-class families inferior; rather, they are just not consistent with the practices of a group that has become powerful in society. Hence, "standard English," is accepted in school; African-American Vernacular English is not welcome. Children who come to school without having already been immersed in the practices and language of the school, what Gee calls "essay-text literacy" (p. 69), will have a hard time catching up, no matter how proficient they become in decoding and encoding. Literacy then, far more than the ability to read and write, is "mastery of a secondary Discourse" (p. 173).For those not already familiar with Gee's work, this is a book that has the ability to make the scales fall from the eyes. Gee writes from a profoundly ethical place, and builds his case skillfully using straightforward language. His definition and description of literacy as mastery of a secondary Discourse applies not only to elementary and secondary education, but to those in higher education, particularly those preparing international students to function in an unfamiliar educational setting. It provides insight into what makes language and behavior appropriate or inappropriate - that is, incongruent with 'normal expectations.' Although it's an academic text, it's very readable and a great read. Highly recommended, then, for those involved in education, especially language education, and for anyone wanting a deeper understanding of language in our daily lives.

I was required to read this book for my Master's program, but I quickly fell in love with it and couldn't put it down. Every teacher, politician, parent, administrator and linguist should read this book. I'm recommending it to everyone I know!

At first I thought that I would be irritated by the 'graphic novel' style, but I think it works very effectively, especially to get over some pretty subtle points. I very much liked the graphic means of storytelling. Storytelling makes an emotional appeal to grab the reader and Mission in a Bottle does that even more effectively than would have been the case had Seth and Barry used a classic business book approach. I particularly enjoyed the way they described the turning down of the offer from Nestlé and the acceptance of the one from Coke. It displayed the company's strategy in a way that is not 'fluff', the term of disapprobation used by Richard Rumelt (Good Strategy Bad Strategy: The Difference and Why It Matters) for so many weak strategy statements.Entrepreneurship students (I teach both entrepreneurship and strategy on an MBA program) would do well to read this book very carefully, as much for what the authors do not say about the entrepreneurial adventure. I told Barry that i was likely to use the book as a set text on my course next year. So I must have liked it a lot.There are so many theories of entrepreneurship and for every one there are examples of its disproof, While I do make some general statements about what works, each case is different. That's what makes Mission in a Bottle so appealing, because the reader can draw on very specific case material, and realize that, for example, the issues in soft drink distribution do not apply in other sectors, but the 'moral' of the story can still be drawn.I wish I had read Mission in a Bottle before I wrote my ebook, Telling StartUp Stories: Keep the End in Mind, since Mission in a Bottle is one of the best examples of startup storytelling I have ever encountered.

While reading I was learning from their mistakes and mentally taking notes about their strengths and ideals.I found the graphic novel format to be a much more approachable format to tell their story. The art was well-done, and used to enhance the story with visuals, but not in any way distracting. This is not the type of book I normally read, but due to its uniqueness compared to other business books, I was intrigued. This book has helped me understand the day-to-day struggles of being an entrepreneur, and about the rewards for the ones who can overcome them.Highly recommend it for upcoming entrepreneurs and young, impressionable minds who enjoy graphic novels. I believe the best way to get a child to read this, is to read it in front of them, and let their curiosity get the best of them.

As other reviewers have noted, the Kindle Editon is unreadable due to the complete lack of formatting.The book is written in graphic novel form, and the text is too small to read. On my iPhone, the book is completely unreadable. On my kindle, you are able to enlarge the image panels by double tapping them, however the smaller text is still too small to read.I managed to slog through half the book, skipping over most of the text and mostly just looking at the pictures. The only thing I have to show for the experience is sore eyes. Complete waste of time.

in the late 90's I lived a few blocks from the Honest Tea offices. At the time they were just a small local company struggling to carve out a niche against giant brands like Snapple.Fast forward to 2014 and they are now owned by Coca-Cola, but still focused on being a company for change- organic teas, fair trade labor standards, and a culture that promotes doing the right thing along with being profitable. They didn't shortchange their values for a quick dollar.What the authors manage to do is tell that story in an amazingly enjoyable way. Yes, there are struggles, mistakes, moments when the future of the company is on the brink. But it's told in such a way that it becomes a page turning 'mystery' instead of a dry, dull business book.The graphic novel format the authors chose makes it even more enjoyable to read and the graphics are beautiful and only add to the story.Don't be fooled by the beautiful artwork- this is a real business book with hard learned lessons, failures, successes, tough choices and everything that makes a great business success story.If you're not familiar with the Honest Tea line of products- find some. If you're not familiar with the decade long story of 'the little tea company that could'- read this book and enjoy.

This is an interesting little animated book about iced tea. I read it as part of a business course. I was pleasantly surprised by how engaging it was, even if it did feel a little forced at times.

This book is a very comprehensive treatment of the unique Islamic phenomena of Jihad (often called the 6th pillar of Islam). The book is very heavily footnoted and will be a guide for scholars for many years.It is clear that although there is a personal dimension to Jihad, the portion emphasizing violent raiding, war, and subjection of other people has been a major activity of Muslims since the 620's and continues today. Any description of Islam as the religion of peace only refers to relations between Muslims. (Even there it has seldom been peaceful). As for a Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, Zoroastrians, and any other "non-believers" it has been an unending source of forced conversion, murder, rape, genocide, and slavery.Even before an areas occupation and rule by Muslims, raids for booty and slaves might be an annual occurrence. In the area of Afghanistan-Pakistan-India these raids depopulated areas, destroyed the culture, and impoverished the survivors for a period of 500 years. The Muslins then took over and governed much of the area for another 500 years. The intense hate between Hindus and Muslims has very long roots and ample justification.The area now dominated by Islam was once over 90% Christian and Zoroastrian, now these two faiths comprise about 1% of the population in that area. How did that happen? Bostom and the other authors provide the answer and it sure wasn't preaching, convincing and converting.In addition to major sections by Bostom there are sections by 20 other major contributors and historical writings by a number of Muslim writers making up 40 separate sections. A number of items are translated into English for the first time in this book.I heartily recommend this book to anyone who has any doubts about the motivations of the Islamic Jihadists we now face.It is apparent that the usual descriptions of the Western Crusades into the Holy land as violent, cruel and bloody may be accurate, but they were of such trivial magnitude as to be described as mere pinpricks against the long tide of bloody conquest and enslavement that has been Islamic Jihad.It took me at least 4 times as long to read as the usual non-fiction, but I consider it to be one of the most essential in the long list of books one must read to become familiar with Islam.

This book provides a detailed account of jihad, incorporating writings of a number of scholars and religious authorities spanning the centuries since the beginnings of Islam. As such, it provides insight into the belief held by some Muslims that jihad is an integral part of their faith. However, this book needs some better copy editing - there are several typographical errors that detract from its scholarly authority.
